Putin/Ukraine and energy costs
Jump to: Newest in thread
Oil prices up....gas prices up (even more). Tge energy cap shot up in October....will go up again in April (both huge jumps). As things are looking even more next October and likely the April after.
What was £1300 last Sept, now £1700 and due to be £2000 plus in October....by October 2023 it could be over £3000!!
Maybe we should have fixed when we could?? |

I have pre pay gas mtr and I have topped it up to £500 which should avoid me topping up for a good 12 mths the gas price is adjusted on the mtr when you top up and load it into the mtr, so my gas price will not increase until I top up again this time next year. |

If you have your gas central heating on (which we all do) then we are supporting Russia. The stupidity of the greens has turned the UK into an energy importer when in reality we could and should be self sufficient. Sturgeon in Scotland is as mad as Putin - ffs open the North Sea, give the go ahead to the Cambo field Shetland, at 100$ a barrel it is more than profitable. On average anything over 39$ is profit. Reopen our coal mines and allow fracking, get the nuclear power stations built. At 1percent of the worlds CO2 the UK is a fart in the wind compared to China, India & USA. Of course we can then reduce reliance on fossil fuel as renewables are increased. Convert gas to Hydrogen/gas mix, reintroduce efficient diesels which must have CATs and particle filters, but stop this reliance on imported energy and unreliable and under provided renewables. |

Thankfully I found a fix back end of last year with a big 6 company (pulled 2 days later!). Currently paying about 20% over the existing fixed rate. Should be well below come April and massively below come October and the April after.
Will have to see where we are come Dec 2023!!
Friends told me I was foolish at the time....but this thing in Ukraine has been coming for a while....they aren't smiling as much now. |

"Let's not forget Russia supplies oil and gas into Europe so no doubt the tap will be turned off soon
Into Europe, only 3-4% in the UK "
UK relies on gas from Norway. I think Norway are obligated to prioritise supply to the EU over the UK so if Russian gas is not available it will still impact UK. |

I could be wrong. Back in the days of heightened Brexit debate I recall reading a document that detailed obligations on Norway for their membership of the EEA. Potential impacts of war with Russia seemed far fetched so easily dismissible. It was a while back though! |

Just to add though (pure speculation clearly) - even if there is no EEA “contractual” obligation there will certainly be huge pressure on Norway to prioritise their friends in the EU when Russian gas stops. |

Not at all but I suspect they value their EEA position/benefits more highly than the relationship with UK. So if they are forced to make a choice! Wonder how trade compares? Not got time to look it up. |

"Time to move to more renewable energy that we can produce ourselves.
Good for the economy, good for the environment, good for British people.

Renewables are still too far off we need to use the resources we have underground in the interim period |

Simply not true. The technology is available and ready.
The renewable industry has a miniscule fraction of the lobbying capabilities of the fossil fuels industry. It's 100% a political decision not to go renewable. |

Don’t you think that if it was really ready to go that the billionaires around the world would not already be on it ?

No, not at all. There's very little money to be made in it. The fossil fuels industry is where the big dollars are.

The UK government should be severely punishing companies who are trying to profit from this situation.
And make sure a cap is put on all energy bills. companies like shell and BP can easily afford to allow profit margins to drop slightly.

This is spot on.
Time to utilise what we have here and kick the green lobby into touch.
Be honest with yourself, would you rather be cold indoors after the imported gas has been turned off. Or happy and warm that the UK was producing its own gas via the North Sea and fracking. |

Or just renewable energy. Much less cost to the tax payer, good for British people, good for the environment. Only downside if for the fossil fuels industry, and the Tories they sponsor. |

Head in the sand again I see.
Renewables on thier own will not work. People have gas boilers so they need gas.
They have petrol/diesel cars so they need petrol and diesel.
We should also build dozens of nuclear power stations as well.
Renewables will take over in 30 to 40 years if not longer. |

Indeed. Longer as there is no political will.
The reality is, we should have started 30 years ago. But failing that, we should start now.
But under the Tories. Absolutely zero chance. |

Sola only works in the daytime, wind only works when the wind is blowing but if too hard does not work because the windmills have to be switched off.
Water has it own problems as well, nuclear will take 10 years plus to get going and so is not ready yet.
Shale gas is the best option in the short term as a stopgap and there’s something like a trillion £’s worth down there.
Not perfect but better than always relying on other countries and paying other countries for it.
The UK needs to stop being a customer and start being a vendor
We need to use our natural resources |
