Possible new rules for University Entrance.
Jump to: Newest in thread
It is being discussed that there should be a minimum entry to University.....GCSE maths and English being suggested as a basis.
Yeah or Nay?
If students can't do simple maths or communicate half decently could they cope with a proper degree course?
Is it a good idea or not? |

"I'm astounded that there isn't a minimum requirement "
For most courses there are… as part of the proposal is that people who did have both would also not have access to students loans and fees help |

Don't know about the rest of UK but a minimum of Nat 5 English 1-2 pass is required for undergrad courses, and Nat 5 Maths for many (nat 5 1-2 is gcse a/b equivalent.) Professional body degrees/postgrads will require both. Even 12 years ago when I applied to do a social work course, both English and Maths at those grades were needed (was called called Scottish standard grades when I sat them). |

Sorry … meant don’t have both….
Which is likely to affect those from lower backgrounds… plus there are some learning disabilities like dyslexia where people have issues with numbers (as well as more commonly spelling)

I still don't understand. Being from a "lower background" doesn't make you academically incapable |

This isnt to do with University entry. This is to do with student loans.
It's another barrier of entry for the poor which doesnt apply to the rich.
There are people who do poorly at standard education but excel at vocational training. They would be denied further education.
This also effects younger people who have left care and those who have suffered abuse as they tend to do worse at school.
But if you're rich and you failed maths and English you can just get mummy and daddy to pay for you. |

Nonsense. If you can pass a basic test, you have nothing to worry about |
