From the Sunday Time
The ultra-rich Tory donors with access to Boris Johnson’s top team
In return for a £250,000 donation to the Conservatives, multimillionaires are being ushered into the heart of government as part of a secret ‘advisory board’
No notes are taken but leaked documents have now revealed the influence a group of Tory backers have over the Tory Government .
It’s obscene and we would would call this banana republic way to do business .
Full details in the Sunday Times
They have to go .

"Quite the racket they have going. "
It been the plan all along, the complete dissolution of democracy in the UK, slowly eroding freedoms, by saying they are giving back freedom, but freedom for whom? Not the ordinary person on the street, freedom for those in power to consolidate their power, until we are back living in fiefdoms as serfs paying tribute to our tory overlords.
Betcha thought taking back control was in your interests. |

Never been under any illusion of who’s interests were being served. But on the other hand know how to navigate the waters. Traded the canoe for a speedboat. |

This is still a good country to live in even with it's problems |

when the traditional conservative and unionist party propaganda press is attacking the party which they more usually support, then it's clear that the conservative and unionist party are now unelectable. |

Indeed they do. However, the system is set up to keep them in place - particularly the FPTP voting system, for UK General Elections.
Changing that has already been rejected once. The likelihood of the public being offered another chance to do so is remote; though not impossible.
Things have become so bad, since 2010, that Scotland even attempted to leave the UK - mainly due to 70% of us never voting Tory under any circumstance - and, although we stayed, post-Brexit, we now have significantly less reason to.
Agree with that, or not, the fact remains that the UK is not united - and the current government represents a minority view, for all their nonsense to the contrary, which is not going to heal the divisions they've spent the last decade and more deepening.
They have no interest in doing so. The status quo is their life-blood. |

How I hope you're right. However, you're well aware that not all voters see things so clearly - and, as I always say, FPTP sets it up so that the majority of the voters are in opposition to the government that takes power. |

I agree it is a good country for a some and for others it’s a nightmare.,
It’s better than a lot of poorer countries too.
The point is it would have been amazing if that doubling of GDP had been shared out with the people in this country. In reality our public services and our living standards wouldn’t have doubled in quality as it’s not pro rata profits but they would have been far better.
To say we’re not as bad as some, is closing your eyes to the elephant in the room. We are on the verge not being a democracy anymore., shocking but true.
If all that hidden trillions was in our economy rather than offshore in private hands , we would be able to both live better and invest in those poorer countries.
Stockholm syndrome indeed. ( I’m stealing that ??)

True and losing so many opposition MPs in one go would cement the Tory governments position beyond belief.
It’s madness that more people want them out but with FPTP they are unassailable.

You'd think. But 100% they will get voted in again.
If you serve big corporations and billionaires, who have the resources to get you re-elected. No matter how much you shit on the electorate, people will vote you back for more. |

Yep. The system keeps them in power and it holds the whole country back, for the sake of the interests gathered in the SE of England.
Now, people will ask me, "What about levelling up?"
On a very small scale, here and there, to suit Tory interests, it might happen.
However, it'll be feeble stuff compared to the reunification of Germany. That was real levelling up - mainly possible due to W.Germany (as it was) being an economic powerhouse and a representative democracy - with the intent of improving the lot of all its citizens.
It cost them €2tn, over 24 years, to bring 17 million of their fellow citizens out of far deeper poverty and neglect than even the most disadvantaged people in the UK experienced - but they made the effort.
The notion that the Tories care enough about the neglected and disadvantaged people of the UK to embark on anything remotely similar is laughable.
They'd rather harm them and preserve the inequality - as their continued unwillingness to shift the tax burden to those with the greatest means to pay it shows. |

However these donors only had access to the Conservative party ( not the government and cabinet ministers ) and senior members. They simply asked questions and expressed their views. Many people do this in a wide variety of different scenarios .
There is no suggestion that their views had any improper influence on government policy.
It would make sense for the government to pay attention to the views of very successfull people.
The current government represents the views of the widest cross section of society possible. These range from working class red wall voters through to extremely wealthy and successfull individuals . |

I'm no fan of our current system but does it not usually elect the single party with the most votes. If you combine all the opposition votes then yes they would be more but they do not represent one party. They represent many parties with many different views. If say football team A wins the league, do we say well that's not fair because if you add together teams B, C, D and E points they actually have more?
I would mostly welcome a PR system though I think it's still possible to elect a government with a minority of the vote. Possibly I'm looking it the wrong way but think it could happen |

Even if this were true - and it isn't - the current government certainly doesn't enjoy the support of the majority of the electorate.
And that's the real problem. |

Yes you’re right about football but when was the last time Man City told Everton how much to pay their footballers and what facilities to provide.
Sorry it’s not the same.
As for minority on PR you may be right but they will only be in power and make policy with others who may be less extreme so it balances out a lot better. Basically the winning party can’t run riot.
