Now Russian troops are heading back to their permenant basis after exercises, who's going to strut about with claim it was their "Victory" after running about like headless chickens?

Vlad has had them all knocking on his front door asking him to keep the noise down.

Putin won

He doesn't need to go to war to make the west look stupid. They can do that all by themselves with a little manipulation from covert Russian interference.

The troops are still sat there, Putin won't pull them back till he's got something he can laud to his people..

This will run for a while yet, he's scared his own population long term will want to be more westernised..

It's far from verified and while the threat may have diminished a little it hasn't gone away.

As for who claims a victory (that hasn't happened yet) and/or looks foolish. I really don't see what else the west could have sensibly done.

The other options were?

Fill Ukraine with NATO troops and have a proper war?

Or we could have let Putin walk in and take the country (which he may yet still do) without any kind of sanctions. Hey Vlad don't forget to send us a postcard from Kiev.

It was a difficult situation that was instigated by Putin, they were not British or US tanks massing at the border, and I think the western leaders did OK in the circumstances.

Why do we make him stronger as blatant mafia Don by letting his friends hold cash and property in London?

It is alleged he has a “few” mega yachts . On a salary of similar size to Boris.

Like we gave our cash to China we’ve given safe haven to Putin’s wealth.

So much for strong government against crime.

The worse crime is we keep electing these muppets .

I bet Johnny Foreigner doesn’t watch comedy programmes in their own country anymore. He just tunes into the BBC or ITV news to see what our muppet show is up to today!

Precisely and I feel the same, but some will probably try to claim some sort of victory and infuriate Putin. They don't seem to understand about keeping enemies close.

I don’t doubt other countries have Russian residents and a few of the yachts in Antibes are Russian. Not sure many live there. If you remember I also have a Russian neighbour in Spain. Handy for security as he’s a bit intimidating but we get along just fine.

London due to its tier 1 visa fast track and lack of tax rules has been the preferred destination of choice for a very large number of Russian billionaires. It’s a very good place to hide along with a rich choice of offshore tax havens under the U.K. control readily available for squirrelling that dosh.

This link shows you an Eastern European view. It gives a couple of good reasons why they are here.

https://emerging-europe.com/after-hours/why-do-eastern-european-and-central-asian-oligarchs-love-london/

I do think it’s unfair to call them all Russians though as the article shows. . Just mostly .

The BBC show over 14k tier one visa investors who’ve moved here from Russia. Not all billionaires but why bother if it’s not worth it? They can be rich in other countries,

We have a history of making it easy on them along with a banking and property system which continues to make it easy on them .

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/60348046

I agree with you on China. We in the western world invited them to dinner and let them take the table and cutlery home with them. More fool us. Cheap t shirts and all that.

yes i have read your links and im glad we have better private schools and people want to go to them as for tier 1 visas other european countries have them too.Yes our libel laws are different from the USA but very similar to most of europe. Property prices rise higher year on year in London than most cities so im not surprised savvy investors invest in london.

Maybe these people bother to live here rather than anywhere else because its a great free country to live in with fantastic schools and universities.

Given that they are billionaires I think they can afford private tuition and the kids can stay over at any one of the top 100 boarding schools. Mum and dad don’t need to be here.

Feel free to pick one.

https://www.best-schools.co.uk/uk-school-league-tables/list-of-league-tables/top-boarding-schools-by-gcse

And yes laundering money through a high rising property market is certainly a bonus. 700 reported cases of unexplained wealth and yet we only see four actions. What’s the point of the law if the government doesn’t use it? Maybe it’s because a few Russian backers of the Tory parry might withdraw their support. Offshore funds still unexplained for the backer of 34 Tory MPs ( yes Chinese on Labour too). This issue involves both labour and Tory governments so I’m not just having a go at the Tory party.

I can’t take you seriously if you are trying to defend the influx of dodgy money by saying the schools are good.

The fact you probably paid tax all your life while they pay nothing towards the U.K. with their vast wealth should make you annoyed. They are disrespecting the country and short changing our tax service. If you are so patriotic as you make out you should be first in line shouting for them to pay their share. And yet you defend them? Not very patriotic of you is it!,

My apologies for taking this off track to the OP.

I personally think it will be claimed we showed them how strong we are etc. but hopefully it won’t go there. There’s no winners in any of this apart from maybe Putin having a laugh at the west. He’s a bully and will only take notice if you hit back but no one wants to risk that sort of scenario . Only the innocents suffer.

If there was a definite "victory" to proclaim, you can bet they would all be seeking credit; however ridiculous it would be for them to do so.

There's something nobody seems to be considering, though.

Russia is, undoubtedly, a mafia state run by an arsehole. However, it's a sovereign state just like any of the NATO or EU countries.

That means that, like all of them, they have the right to position their armed forces anywhere they like within their own borders. Do they not?

What if - and it's only an if - Putin decides to keep the bulk of his army where it is? What does the West - particularly the USA/UK do then?

I'm not saying the Russians are the good guys - they're not. They invaded Crimea, they're still backing a civil war in the Donbas Region; and the West did not get stuck into them then, with the sort of sanctions they're talking about now.

However, beyond those illegalities, the Russians are not breaking any laws by stationing their armed forces wherever they like, within their own country.

We're told that it's too expensive for them to do that - well, maybe, but right now, they're raking it in, as is every other gas producer.

We're also told that preparing for a war means they're going to have one - the old "You don't put on a condom unless you're going to fuck!" line, from the film Crimson Tide.

That was an interesting movie - where a calmer head prevailed in the face of unverified fear.

Maybe it's something Joe and Boris might want to consider. They've made their point. Now they can dial it back a bit and see if Vlad's actually as stupid a lot of people would love him to be.

That's very true, Russia has the right to do as it pleases inside its own borders. They also have the right to keep massed troops on the border for as long as they like. Unfortunately what happened in Crimea showed that they don't always stay inside their borders. I wonder how Russia would react if NATO suddenly started massing troops on the Russian border. After all they say they feel threatened by the fact that former Soviet countries are now part of NATO. Anyway if war is averted then everyone are winners

NATO has already increased the number of troops on Russia's borders, in the Baltic countries. I'd concede that they're hardly a mass - but why shouldn't they be concerned?

Is it because NATO is widely known as a non-belligerent organisation purely for defence?

Given what it's done this century, you could be forgiven for not believing that to be entirely true.

Your point about Crimea is valid - but you have to wonder why the sort of sanctions being talked about now, were not taken when that happened?

I've yet to hear any explanation of why, no matter how feeble, from any Tory voter or politician.

If crippling economic sanctions for an invasion are justified - and they are; why have they not already been used as a punishment for Russia's invasion of Crimea?
