Should the Met be broken up?

So that the national and political policing it carries out are under one roof and then the general policing under another.

My thoughts are that it has gotten too big and unwieldy for it to function as is.The last few scandals have shown this.

The Borough Commanders should also be elected rather like American Sheriffs.

Not sure on the first question. Agree that national and city based operations shouldn't be conflated, but there's a lot of political activity in London, and any police activity that crosses force borders needs one set of officers to run and 'own' the operation. If we did trim back the Met, we'd need the National Crime Agency (or similar) to pick up the slack.

I would say there's bugger all reason why the Square Mile had it's own police force, that should be rolled into the Met.

I don't think we should break the Met into boroughs though. Ultimately London is a city, and neither crime nor citizen's lives stop at a borough border (that's why we have transport police etc). Anything that adds unnecessary admin feels like an own goal.

Eh?

What National Policing do the Metropolitan Police engage in?

Also, The Sheriff’s Department in America is actually a County Police Force and Greater London is a County.

In America individual “cities” (Boroughs in U.K.) have their separate Police Departments.

Policing in America is actually overkill as there is a National Police Force (FBI), each State has a statewide Police Force (State Troopers)and then as mentioned, each county has a Sheriff Dept and within each County, every “City” has its own Police Department.

Not sure any of that translates to U.K. Policing.

The former chief of police in Manchester says there is a worrying tendency to have more politically motivated individuals being recruited to oversight committees.

Whilst he was happy to be accountable to the public he felt political influence is getting in the way of police independence. There are bent corrupt sleazy police officers just as there are the same in every large organisation. Just this week a doctor and a midwife struck off for disgusting behaviour.

To tar the service as a whole and try to make it a political arm of the government or local authorities is dangerous to democracy and the rule of law.
