"So is he right that macron and merkel killed hundreds of thousands of people with their political postering and causing vaccine uncertainty?"

Germany covid deaths 119,000

France covid deaths 130,000

Is he suggesting that they should have had only 49,000 deaths between them ?

no I don’t think so I think he is suggesting that their constant change of mind and macrons statement that AZ was ineffective caused people to doubt vaccines worldwide. At least that’s how I read it.

I think the hundreds of thousands is a bit excessive looking at the total numbers in Europe and that most deaths occurred before the vaccine roll outs when more were clearly vulnerable.

I do think any negative confusing approach by any leaders like Macron must have caused sone not to get the vaccine and so caused deaths .

Stupid politicians claiming knowledge on medical vaccines . They should all defer to the science .

I bet if boris had said it you would have a different opinion. but yes i think a lot of the poorer countries who the vaccine was intended for as it was at cost price and profit free did listen to the pair of muppets at great cost to their people.I do agree you cant put a figure on it though it could be thousands on the other hand it could be millions.

I read some but not all of the BBC article today on this. I think they are saying that the bad publicity generated by certain leaders including macron put doubt into people's minds. That's bad enough in a country that has a good take up of vaccines but really bad for countries where they were already hesitant. The AZ vaccine as far as I know was at cost price and easily stored. Perfect for poorer nations. Not only do they mention hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by this but also the mutations that happened. Possibly if exactly the same vaccine had been developed in France or Germany they would not have said such things.

Maybe, however there have been 189 million doses of the Pfizer compared to 100 million of the AZ given in the UK

Like I say even in a country with a good vaccine take up its bad news. For more hesitant countries it's many times worse.

Yes a place in Belgium made the vaccine and also a company in India made it under a different name. It was primarily developed in the UK and as far as I know the only one at cost price (at least at the time). The report shows that comments from the likes of macron damaged the brand / reputation of the product. This had a bad effect on take up hence avoidable illnesses. Like him or loathe him, macron is a national leader and the news spreads very quickly all over the world. He sowed the seeds of doubt across the world. Apparently even locally in France, clinics had to throw away the vaccine as people simply did not turn up after his comments. It all there in the report

Macron wanted France to be one of the top vaccine producers.

Unfortunately, Sanofi let him down and couldn't develop one.

Many said it was safe and effective including experts but as I say macron had sowed the seeds of doubt and damaged the reputation of the vaccine. It's bad enough when crackpots spout things on social media but far worse having a national leader saying that sort of stuff
