Johnson didn't cover himself in glory with this episode, even by his incredibly low standards.

"Finger pointing from a coward."

Worse. Finger pointing from a coward and a liar, repeating a far right wing smear from the murky parts of the internet.

(Exactly the sort of thing Trump would do to appeal to far right wing loons.)

And Johnson has now backtracked on his smear, but only after a bunch of his cronies ran around defending his lie. So I bet they're thrilled now, too.

The irony is that Johnson likely threw out the Saville smear as a way to kick up a fuss that had nothing to do with Partygate. But he misjudged just how awful it would make him look to many people.

And Partygate hasn't gone away anyway. So this Saville thing is just another thing to add to his growing pile of scandals.

Completely agree, plus also love how some of the far right people on Twitter have gone "finally pleased Starmer will be exposed for Saville" but now the truth is coming out. It was out already on the BBC, but of course they don't like the BBC...

From what I understand 3 out of the 4 resignations were probably asked for, after Boris pledged to "clear out" the top levels in response to Sue Grays recommendations. Obviously not clearing out the very top though. As in himself!! Wouldnt surprise me if after all of party gate, it's a false dig at Starmer about Saville that breaks the camels back. If I was a beleaguered tory, doggedly holding on and backing my leader as his credibility left the building, only for him to go and full-on lie in front of everyone, AGAIN... Well I would no doubt see him as an absolute lost cause. Only so many times you can plug holes in a sinking ship

It depends who you believe, most sources are saying they resigned but Boris and his cult are trying to spin it , saying they were sacked. Either way, it looks awful,

It's a classic Lynton Crosby Trick, put a dead cat in the room, its there to distract from the PM's situation, Labour goes up in arms, goes on the defensive, everyone is talking about that. Which changes the narrative, he can then get some breathing space.

It's worked to a degree, but the pressure is still on him, his allies are walking away because they know this is going the wrong way and fast. Some may perceive this as a promise to backbenchers to get rid of his team. But considering how fast this was, it doesn't look calculated. It looks chaotic and unplanned, he will try convince people it was him not them. But he lies so much it is easy to see through him.

At the time of the smear I was surprised the speaker allowed him to get away with it! And more so didn’t admonish him at the PMQs after!!

It was so outrageous I thought WTF, also getting through this he also alluded to the labour front bench taking drugs which has been skipped over…

It was so desperate….

"... repeating a far right wing smear from the murky parts of the internet.

it's alarming when so many conservative and unionist party mp's are directly quoting language from far right extremist terror group websites during political discourse especially in the house. recent offenders include:

The phrase “cultural Marxism” was used by Suella Braverman in a speech and, separately, by Tory backbenchers in a letter to the Telegraph. Braverman, who has since become the attorney general, was criticised by a leading Jewish group for using the term, a reference to a conspiracy theory often associated with the far right and antisemitism.

The home secretary, Priti Patel, was accused of fanning the flames of far-right racism and violence in a manner akin to that of the former US president Donald Trump. Four charities wrote to her, warning that her words have “harmful consequences”, after she bragged in September 2020 about removing asylum seekers and had also spoken of “do gooders” and “lefty lawyers” offering support to the same people.

Tory MPs who have retweeted Tommy Robinson include Bob Blackman and Nadine Dorries, now culture minister. She shared a tweet from the activist before using far-right tropes against the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and the writer and journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown.

Separately, the Tory MP Andrew Rosindell’s Facebook account was found to have joined a “Free Tommy” group.

Johnson’s own use of the word “surrender” to describe legislation passed in 2019 that aimed to block a no-deal Brexit on 31 October was heavily criticised. But he was subsequently joined by formerly moderate Conservative cabinet ministers, Matt Hancock and Nicky Morgan, in defending the language of war, despite pleas by Labour and former Tory MPs to stop suggesting those against Brexit are guilty of treachery or betrayal.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, before he became leader of the House of Commons, defended a tweet in which he quoted the leader of a German far-right party Alternative für Deutschland (AfD). The MP insisted in 2019 that he did not endorse the German party’s views but the opinions expressed had “real importance” after tweeting a YouTube video of a speech by Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD’s 91 deputies in the Bundestag, the German parliament.

Tom Hunt, Tory MP for Ipswich, was accused last year of fuelling racism after appearing to blame crime in his constituency on “certain communities”. Hunt was accused by the Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality (ISCRE) of “an ill-judged piece of dogwhistling” in a local newspaper column. Linking crime to immigrant communities, the MP criticised those “who say we should be eternally tolerant of bad behaviour, which may be rife in other countries but is not traditionally in ours” and went on to say that integration should include “learning English, respecting women and obeying our laws”.
