Strange that for many years the capital of Ukraine was also referred to as the Russian version "Kiev", now the press want to use the original name "Kyiv" as to not further Russian claims on it.
A number of global heavyweights have recently adopted the Ukrainian-language derived “Kyiv” as their official spelling for the country’s capital city, replacing the Russian-rooted “Kiev.” This trend began with the Associated Press in late August. |

I wouldn't read too much into it.
Regions and cities (even countries) all over Europe have different spellings/pronunciations in different languages.
München or Munich? Bayern or Bavaria? Köln or Cologne? Praha or Prague? España or Spain?
Even within a single country you can get different ones. Alicante or Alacant? Majorca or Mallorca?
The list could go on forever. |

That’s real funny. Unless half of your family will
be killed or injured in the process like mine will be.
And the name change started way before June, that’s just when those not familiar with the area or the people started to notice it. |

Within reason I don’t have a problem spelling the name of a city by the name they prefer to call it… it’s not a new phenomenon
I mean… when was the last time we actually called the Chinese capital “peking”… or Indian cities Bombay (Mumbai) or Calcutta (kolkata)
Heck as a football fan we have not used Cologne (koln) in years!!! |

They could have standardised the name back to preoccupation "Kyiv" back in 1991 when the USSR broke up.
Now that Putin is breathing down the necks of Ukraine, Western press want to distance themselves from the Russian version "Kiev".
It's a two fingers to Putin if nothing else. |

Actually the football club dynamo have always used Kyiv… and it’s not Ukraines fault to what others countries do with that spelling
Maybe thats more to do with British arrogance… I mean… why did they feel the need to change it in the first place |

With close friends Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland and fully aware of the history of Russian occupation, pain and suffering.
When you understand the context of the comment, maybe then you can correctly make judgement as the rebranding is nothing to do with spelling or pronunciations.
Myanmar - Burma
Rhodesia - Zimbabwe
So, 30 years later, Kiev is recognised as its correct 'non occupation' name.
Kiev was the Russian version..

These are not the same languages. Alacant is Catalán while Alicante is Castellano. Majorca is the Anglicised spelling of Mallorca. Mallorca is the Catalán (therefore correct) spelling.
My approach is to always spell or pronounce country and place names in the local language. Where two languages have dual status (such as in the Alicante region) then I go for the most commonly used in that locale.
I think Ukraine has currently got bigger things to concern itself with than how "the West" spells the name of its capital. We hope that it will not be renamed "new Moscow" (or similar) soon  |

I didn't say that they were in the same language. I said "in the same country"
BTW Alacant is Valenciano. While many say it is no more than a Catalan/Castellano based dialect, it is actually recognised as a separate language in Spain. Hence all the doubled up road signs among other things.

It is Kyiv and has been forever among Ukrainian language speakers. It is named after one of its early settlers, Kyi, as a guide informed me. |

Boris managed to get to Kyiv, thought he was going to fly around the globe looking for Kiev a few times in his sooped up in-flight refuelling tanker with the £900k paint-job on it.
Wonder if they stank of JET 1A when they got off.

Google is confused, flights to Kiev are higher in search rankings than Kyiv. Web optimisers nightmare. Two words, same meaning, lower page ranking.
