The government's wine cellars were topped up by £73,000 last year at the height of the pandemic, an increase of £26,000 on the previous year. And while the Tories took away a £20 weekly payment from some of the poorest in society they partied illegally in Number 10 at Xmas. Vile.

I think that compared to the EU's liberal quaffing of top end Burgundy the commons wine cellar is about the equivalent of a pint and a half of bitter.

Its for the Goverment Wine Cellars.

Used when various Departments have functions.

I'm not sure that our producers have refined their rich reds enough, to be able to supply.

Dont confuse “Government” and the current incumbent Party of Government.

Should the Conservatives loose the next election and Labour get in the wine cellar will still be there and will still be being stocked.

English wine regularly beats other World wines in blind tastings, its come on a lot from the early days of production.

It should not be confused with “British” wine which is imported plonk blended to meet a (cheap) price point.

For white wines, especially sparkling, that is very true. Quite a few English bubbly's have beaten the big boys from Champagne at their own game.

However English red wine still leaves a lot to be desired. A few brave souls are sticking at it but England just doesn't have the climate for reds.

It has numerous bars too. All subsidised. The subsidy is indirect as the cost is absorbed by the running costs of the HOC.

My view is why do we need to invest in expensive wine? It’s our money.

The only people who benefit are the politicians. Why not provide cheaper wine and use the investment cash for social care where more will benefit.
