Now that supply is less with brexit and covid, so as has been said they are reaping what they have sown by not investing in there staff and putting profit and shareholders first all these years. Its going to take quite some time for the economy and labour market to rebalance and there is no quick fix. Even if we reinstated free movement of labour it would in effect only kick the can down the road, it would not solve these issues long term, just paper over them again, then everyone would go back to not giving a monkeys about lorry drivers conditions, or vegetable and fruit pickers being treat like s..... just like they never did before. People only seem interested when it suddenly effects there lives." the thing is there’s not really any training in an abattoir you learn on the job | |||

I don't get why everyone's so surprised, our country has for the last however many years, had an emphasis on training and education for white collar and creative industries and left the blue collar industries to be filled with temps and people desperate for anything they can get to get off benefits. | |||

Why is that relevant? " Many Polish (and other countries) migrants here travel here for a few months in the summer to work, mostly in food manufacture and then return home in the winter. In recent years the British meat supply has come more and more from processing sites in Poland, which has pushed them to expand their facilities and created far more jobs. So travelling to work here for ever increasing shit wages whilst the cost of travelling to and living here is rising is an ever worsening choice. | |||

Tony Blair and the Labour Party encouraged everyone to realise their potential and go to university instead of pushing apprenticeships to ensure we have the right skilled people in the required numbers. The so called foreign cheap labour(hard working people who came here to use their skills) was always going to be a short sighted and unsustainable business model. If we want the best we must pay the cost and train the best and get the current generation of to consider training and upskilling. Butchers on average make 32k a year, that is a decent wage , but I am guessing it’s hard work and not very ‘desirable’, Butchery is an apprenticed field, you can't learn it in school can you? Between the direction that education has taken in creating computer and creative field candidates and the disappearance of apprenticeships as a direction that is advertised to young people, it's no wonder that these types of jobs are seeing shortages of people with the knowledge? There are many many industries that have been lost to automation and computers doing the work, cars being built, glass work, carpentry etc etc There was no shortage last year Poland has no shortage of abbatoirs... Why is that relevant? Many Polish (and other countries) migrants here travel here for a few months in the summer to work, mostly in food manufacture and then return home in the winter. In recent years the British meat supply has come more and more from processing sites in Poland, which has pushed them to expand their facilities and created far more jobs. So travelling to work here for ever increasing shit wages whilst the cost of travelling to and living here is rising is an ever worsening choice. " yes they travel here and work for low wages brilliant for employers and consumers not brilliant for the uk work force. I know guys working in London earning 35 pound an hour as shuttering carpenters, they fly in and out from Ireland on a bi weekly basis having a long weekend every fortnight. Crazy cost of living here even in smaller towns puts people off. Same reason why people can't afford to move to UK cities-price of accommodation. With circa 60m people the UK should have a pretty big pool of workers but why not? Any time I've been to UK the amount of dossers I've seen hanging around witherspoons during the day and on street corners is staggering. And all these people you see out protesting various causes like the isulate crowd. In Ireland when things were bad the UK was always a place of employment in agriculture and construction as it was always felt and said here that most people in England didn't have the appetite for that kind of work! | |||

Now maybe they will see the benefit of training the youth of today just like companies did before free movement and the kids of the future will have worthwhile job opportunities when they finish education. " As the nations kids upskill and get better educated in order to do higher skilled jobs and get paid more. Who is going to be doing the menial jobs that they never wanted to do anyway? We need waiters, waitresses, fruit pickers, warehouse workers, cleaners, etc etc - these are jobs in large sectors of the economy and they can’t just disappear. Perhaps we should import cheap labour to do these jobs when the local kids are are far to well educated and skilled to do then? | |||
