Ian Botham is our new trade envoy to Australia.

What does he know about international trade and negotiating them?

If this is a good idea, do explain why. I'm not sure that it's necessary to explain why it isn't...

Are you saying he knows nothing about international trade?

Does the fact that he was a professional sportsman automatically mean he has no other qualities?

He was a high-profile brexit supporter.

That's all that is required by the most corrupt, venal and incompetent government in this country's history.

Why wouldn't they choose people who supported Brexit?

I mean, you're not exactly gonna choose someone who opposes what you're trying to achieve are you?

A government is not supposed to have the specification of a cult.

Even if its own members are terminally useless, the appointment of officials and representatives surely should be made on the basis of appropriate experience and relevant knowledge.

Informed discussion and varying viewpoints have been replaced by slavish obedience to the cult leader and unquestioning loyalty to the project, despite all evidence demonstrating that it continues to visit disaster upon the country.

I've already asked another poster, but I'll ask you too.

Do you know that Sir Ian Botham has no knowledge of trade?

And again, why wouldn't they choose someone who supports the interests of the project?

There is no evidence, that I am aware of, to suggest that former sportsman, media pundit and controversialist Botham has any relevant experience. If you know any different, perhaps you would like to enlighten us?

Knowledge, relevant experience and ability? Oh, sorry, I forgot; not important to the brexit cult leaders

Ian Botham is a winegrower in Australia.

He knows about exporting wine to the UK.

He also has a financial interest.

Does that work for you?

In his own words on his appointment to the Lords.

He said: “I’m enjoying it and will be at Westminster more often when we get back to normal, especially when they are debating something I know about – like sport or the countryside. Not much point if it’s a trade deal with Japan.”

Fortunately there is no hint of a conflict of interest as an exporter of Australian wine...

Sure. They "sell" UK exports.

That is as detailed as the role is. The point is that he does not, actually, have any knowledge of what that entails as he said himself.

Is a conflict of interests an issue or not?

I know "something" about trade between the UK and Australia but no conflict of interest.

Might it be better to have someone who knows a lot about trade between the UK and Australia and the wider region as our trade envoy?

Exactly they use their influence or popularity to open doors for uk businesses nothing more but that seems lost on some.

So it would be worse for a trade envoy to know about trade.

Javing an export business in the country in which you are an envoy to is not a conflict of interest.

It's diplomacy and sales.

I've provided a list of the other trade envoys.

How doesord Botham fit in with that list?

Do any of them have financial interests in those countries?

Is it a good thing or a bad thing if they do?

Have to say that this is one of the funniest threads I have read on these boards

The attempts by some to slot every detail of everything into every appropriate hole in an appropriate and precise way is just totally inappropriate. Yet the more that they are told this, the more they try to do it.

Pretty soon, some will be asking, nay demanding, that buses wheels all wear in exactly the same way. Then blame, or vilify, some civil authority if they don't.

We live in the time of the minutia of everything and of nothing.

The Sun is shining, stop looking for rain.

Settle this one finally . . .

Trade envoys

Trade envoys are a network of PM appointed parliamentarians, drawn from across the political spectrum.

The trade envoys engage with one or more emerging markets where substantial trade and investment opportunities have been identified by UK government.

They support the drive for economic growth by building on the UK’s existing relations with these markets and maximising bilateral trade, thereby generating real and long term benefits for the UK.

The Trade Envoy programme began in 2012 and continues to go from strength to strength.

There are 36 trade envoys covering 76 markets.

Maybe now we can wash the wall down.

"

Trade envoys in this category do not negotiate trade deals - they are flag wavers & promoters of trade ideas and investment in emerging markets - usually chosen from their experience in the field as a professional or as a famous celebrity. Celebrities have been paid to promote brands since the 30's. The UK as a sales brand is no different.

With enough interest, support and commitment, there is no reason why Sir Ian can't do a good job.

Go! Sir Ian.
