Tones of veg being wasted

Apparently some veg is the wrong shape for customers, say supermarkets... Leaving tonnes of veg to rot because its too expensive to give to charities, bent carrots, beetroot not round enough etc.

Should they be forced to stop wasting food pn this basis ?

Some supermarkets do now sell irregular shaped vegetables.

Most of irregular shapped veg ends up in soups and other foodstuffs.

Was on the news that 130, 000 tonnes is left to rot in the fields. I suppose it will feed the soil for next year

This is our own fault for constantly looking for perfection.

There is absolutely no difference between a wonky carrot to a straight one

I blame the Joe Wicks generation and their pursuit for Instagram perfection meals.

Although saying that I do buy a lot of fruit and I always try and get the best looking non manky ones in my basket.

Probably fortunate that so many EU migrant workers left as had they stayed, there would not have been any vegetables to harvest given that the supermarkets are being so picky about what they now accept.

I thought that I had read recently that 40 to 50% of food waste is done at a Consumer level.

Imagine all those fines, lol. UK.GOV would be rolling in it!

"i buy mine from the local grocer or the farm shop so dont care what shape they are as long as they are fresh. "

And that's all you need to know, lol.

I don't care if my carrot is shaped like a banana - in fact, the only real shape that would irk me would be that bread wasn't the same shape as the toaster

Morrisons have their 'Wonky Range'.

Tesco's have their 'Perfectly Imperfect Range'.

Sainsbury and Waitrose and Lidl haven't yet given a name to bendy veg, but they do promote the sale of them.

Definitely. I'd go further. I'd force them to buy it from the farmers and then pay for it to be distributed to food banks.

On the massive profits they make, they could afford it.

once upon a time you had to stay sat at the table until you had eaten your vegetables..... that is most likely child abuse now lol

on this site we could use them for other reasons! especially the misshapen ones

A lot of the waste is down to economics too

Why sell mishaps at 50p when you can sell perfect for £1

Say 10% profit

10% 50p is 5p

10% of £1 is 10p

Sell half as much make same profit

It’s the same for the farmers too why devalue your best crop by selling the poorer products

In Holland flowers go to auction if they don’t sell above a set price their destroyed

The reason being if their sold off cheaper why would anyone buy the dearer products

The costs of giving stock away would surprise you too manpower transportation washing ect ect

Thus goes back to me blaming our own selves for looking for perfection.

Why would misshapen veg sell for cheaper? The quality of the product would be no different.

It must be even harder for those picking the fruit and veg to differentiate between acceptable and non acceptable products.

Imagine having to go through a field and make the decision to leave misshapen products and the time wasted to do so.

In all honesty, I would have thought it easier to pick everything the discard that which does not sell but the media speak of fruit and veg rotting in fields so they cannot be doing that.

Of course, the media will always exaggerate to make a story.

Has anyone actually seen fruit and veg rotting in fields or actual shortages?

I doubt it.

As I understand it all are picked, then the best are selected and the rest are ploughed back on later. So you can have both your approach and the headline.

Because of a human need for perfection. We only have ourselves to blame. I'm not sure how much clearer I can be.
