In my younger more idealistic days I was staunchly anti monarchy and there is still a part of me that isnt entirely comfortable with hereditary rulers
However as you grow and get a more rounded view of the world you come to realise that it's important for a nation to have a historical grounding and that tradition, culture and ceremony in some form is very important to people
So while I'm still not exactly pro monarchy I do understand that they serve a purpose, and quite an important one, even if a lot people don't necessarily realise that |

Someone told me that they were pressuring Leeds Council to have them taken down. I don't see how the council could take them down. But as most council chambers have a picture of the Queen, I bet they are not that comfortable with the signs. |

"I’m ambivalent on the monarchy. I don’t think I could be that invested to join one of these campaigns.
There is other things much more worthy of my time.
"
I'm much the same, given a vote, I'd probably vote for getting rid of them.
At least in their present format. A head of state is a useful role to have filled by a (mostly)non-political figurehead though.
But I'd like a bit of a rewrite regarding some of their perks of the job!
I also realise that if it came to a vote, I'd certainly be in a minority. So as you say, I tend not to give it too much thought unless someone brings up the subject. |

Maybe we could keep all the fancy stuff like the Palaces and such like and make a very large 'Monarchy Towers' Like the Alton one. With rides. Maybe open Buck Palace as a Hotel. Balmoral as a Haunted Castle.
It would still bring in the tourists, but without the civil list.

You could probably keep a few of the family on as tour guides. |

France gets more tourists than us and they cut if the kings head!!
Just saying!!
I like the Queen and the dignity she has. Once she’s gone I’m all for getting rid of the whole stinking system. The class system holds so many back in this country. Who you know not how good you are is still a gilded right of passage to the select few. |

“France gets more tourists than us and they cut if the kings head!!”
Yup, the “The Queen brings in more tourist money than she costs” bullshit REALLY winds me up. Firstly it’s based on no facts, figures or research whatsoever; secondly, tourists visiting Stratford-Upon-Avon and Hampton Court hardly expect to see Shakespeare or Henry VIII (and if they stand outside gawping at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle hoping to glimpse the Queen they’ll be sorely disappointed); and thirdly, how then do we judge the Monarch’s “performance”? Charles was a better/worse King than William because he brought in more/less tourist money?
The Queen could be replaced by a cardboard cut-out: she “instructs” Parliament in a Speech which the Government has prepared based on the Electorate’s votes (quite rightly) and rubber-stamps the Royal Assent turning a Bill into law (and mostly even that isn’t needed).
BUT, she represents our country, is the basis of our legal (Regina vs. etc) and diplomatic systems (Ambassadors represent the Monarch), and is in herself a remarkable woman. For example, at the time of Diana’s death she was faced with the choice of maintaining the Establishment way of doing things (she refused to lower the flags at Windsor and the Tower because Diana had been stripped of her HRH title) or bowing to populist pressure and acknowledging the “people’s princess”. In the end she managed a quite reasonable compromise. She didn’t handle the 1992 fire at Windsor Castle quite so well though, demanding at first that the public should pay for the repairs. Good Old Tony (Blair) had to get her out of that hole.
My heart tells me that UK taxpayers should continue to maintain the Monarch (and the “heir and a spare”, all the other civil listers a different matter) in the style and splendour befitting the Head of State of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But my head tells me that when William and Kate arrive on the scene we might just as well have had Posh and Becks represent us to the World… |

I believe research was done many years ago saying the attraction of the queen with her palaces , guards etc does bring in more revenue that she costs .
Not sure the hangers on are quite so well documented.
I like an independent head of state but not sure how we would replace the Queen without it becoming a political pile of shite similar to Parliament.
Who could we vote for? Who is independent in reality?
Keep the heir and as you say a spare but fuck all the leeches off and castles pass over to the national trust. Then let’s have a monarchy similar in statute to the Scandinavians .
Nice people but less of a costly burden and certainly less of a class barrier.

That would be a Republic - ours is a Monarchy but with Parliamentary sovereignty.
But the UK Government does have the power to Depose or Appoint a Monarch.

Remind me of the last time the relevance/desirability of monarchy was debated in Parliament or by the state broadcaster.
Maybe I was abroad on that day. |

There has to be a desire from the electorate for it.
Just like leaving the EU, there hadn't been much interest in it until Farage etc. got enough of the public interested in the idea.
That put pressure on MPs, who put pressure on their parties leaderships.
The same levers can be pulled for just about any subject. All you need is a good firm grip of the media. |

If ever there was a need to, then perhaps they would and the important thing is that it could, I'm NOT a Royalist. But the reality is that the majority of the public still want it.

Just saw this . . .
"Despite the conversation had by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with Oprah Winfrey last week about their time as active Royal members, two surveys by Ipsos MORI, completed before and after the interview, show it has done little to alter British opinions towards the monarchy.
Before the interview was aired in the UK on Monday 8th March, 43% said Britain’s future would be worse should the monarchy be abolished, and after the interview 41% said the same. Only 1 in 5 (19%) now believe abolishing the monarchy would be good for the country’s future, a similar proportion to before the interview (17%). " |

"Fxxck the queen "
If she was on here there would be plenty queueing up to do just that!
A female hippo would have a following on here let alone an elderly female monarch.
And at least she would be able to hold and intelligent and interesting conversation.

I’d love to know her views on world leaders from the past . Gorbachev , Reagan , Churchill scientists , industrial magnates, inspirational people like Richard Attenborough. People who’s she’s met from me around the commonwealth. She will have a thousand stories to tell.
I don’t care if you like or dislike her she would be a fantastic dinner guest.
I’m all for cutting back the monarchy as it’s a waste and class re-enforcing but as a person fuck me she is pretty awesome.

I've met Princess Anne three times (she was our Colonel in Chief).
She was a really interesting and funny woman to chat to. She also seems the most like her mum.
(Of course the above is not to say I wouldn't line her up against the wall and shoot her with the rest of them!)

I’m against the monarchy as it stands and would like to see a more Scandinavian example to keep an independent head of state but strip the wealth and privilege .
The woman Elizabeth is someone I’d love to chat to.
I've met Princess Anne three times (she was our Colonel in Chief).
She was a really interesting and funny woman to chat to. She also seems the most like her mum.
(Of course the above is not to say I wouldn't line her up against the wall and shoot her with the rest of them!)
;-)" she wasn’t really your colonel in chief tho she didn’t really earn it just a title that’s all lol |

Ambivalent with regards to the monarchy. They serve a purpose and the trouble with abolishing them is that there will be a desire to replace them with a career politician. It will then all turn nasty, plus I would rather there were fewer elections these days not more. |
