The area won't leave us though.

Heroine, regional instability and terrorism.

Imposing a European solution has never worked. Something working with the grain of that society might.

Diplomacy and patience. Not something the news and election cycle lends itself to.

. Idk it's a valid point. They want afganistan they are there. The only reason they did not pursue any interest is because the US has been busy with afganistan. Now the focal point has shifted. No more afganistan for us. Focus on china and Russia influence. They loved us bogged down there took the focus off them. China's turn.

They generally prefer stability unless they are sabre rattling in the South China Sea as a distraction for their population.

The whole area of North Africa & Middle East with a few oil rich exceptions is a disaster. Hence desperate people risking their lives to reach Europe for a better life. An understandable human desire. The Chinese have sucked all the low paid manufacturing jobs east. It’s sad when you see young black guys around the Mediterranean trying to sell fake shit made in China!

The answer? A European super force to go in and occupy all the good bits, mainly coastal , with a modern equivalent Marshall plan to rebuild. Turn it into a European playground.

Im not suggesting anything be ignored. I too have issues with our foreign policy, but this isn’t about that and my comment was only in reference to the ludicrous idea that there was a secret departure. Hell, it takes twenty minutes and a dozen radio calls just to taxi out to the runway in that place....per aircraft. It’s laughable that anyone entertains things like that, and pathetic that stories are published about them. The handover started months ago.

I give it a week before all of the infrastructure there is gone. All the plumbing, wiring, glass steel and wood will be pillaged before the end of the month and hauled away to build on farmers own land.

Wasn’t there, but I suspect the conversation would have been an effort to convince the Taliban to allow elected government who represent each province to govern. Not something they would entertain. Government is elected by the majority of the population there, who are not gun wielding thieves looking to tax honest people and restrict basic human rights.

In the grand scheme, yes. Had the effort been made at any point in either theater to try and stand on their own, it wouldn’t have drug on for so long. It just turned into a bad relationship that never had an opportunity for a clean break.

The USA should have learnt lessons by now, but they are doomed to repeat the same idiotic mistakes over again.

The Vietnam wsr ended exactly the same way and the people of Afghanistan have suffered terribly.

Now America has abandoned what they started again,

China are neighbours with Afghanistan and i doubt they'll be ad stupid as America.

"The reason Vietnam failed and Afghanistan has not been cracked is because when the Romans went to war they took no prisoners so to speak, civilian? No such thing...

It makes those conflicts hard to win, who is the enemy him him her?

Lets watch Chinas approach

Yep Americas problem in vietnam was they were too lenient.

They were to lenient to win, if they had just killed everything that moved they would have won, end of. Wars once upon a time meant the conquering army then ruled, now we are worrying about future customers.

Riiight.

Yeeeeees I am, Afghanistan is not unbeatable, just depends what price you are willing to pay for victory, there's a lot of Chinese. "

So Britain, Russia and america..3 of the most powerful countries in the world at the time were just unlucky.

Good test for the Chinese. On one hand they need afganistan for their initiatives. On the other they suppress their Muslims. Smart to pull out we get to study their combat effectiveness.

Interesting theoriwa about China going and fighting a war in Afghanistan.

It's almost as if there's belief that the Chinese are too dumb to learn from other people's mistakes.

If they want something from Afghanistan they will pay whomsoever they need to pay, regardless of how they behave towards their own population.

I doubt very much that they will fight anyone. Cheaper not to.

The Americans occupied Afghanistan for twenty years. They are not wanted . It's time for them to leave and never return , they have killed tens of thousands of people, bombed weddings and tortured many thousands more. They have also promoted warlords who are known and prolific paedophiles , and encouraged the heroin trade to bribe others . Their presence has been a disaster for the people of Afghanistan and twenty years of tragedy for the region.

Bigger and badder equipment. Lessons JTLV is 100 times better. IED sweepers where non existent got them now too. So pulling back and making more is a prudent choice. More money for R&D. Call it a loss it truly is not.

Oh and the Taliban and isis are moral crusaders. Don’t forget the UK’s part in all this death and destruction. Let the women starve to death because they aren’t allowed to work even if they have no provider in the family. As for education don’t even think about it. If your gay you’re going off the nearest high building! Your daughters at 11 years of age are prime for a marriage to a 52 year old bloke who’s got some goats.

The invasion was badly thought out with what appeared to be no effort to create a peaceful free country I agree but to blame the US for Afghanistan’s disaster of a country I think is unfair. Go back a long way and you will find it’s littered with death and chaos.

How many wedding did they target? How many paedophiles did they encourage. Really?. The American airforce targeted weddings on purpose? You actually think they decides oh what nice day for blowing up a wedding!,

So you’re saying the 100k plus deaths has all just be a live fire training ground for the armed forces.

The deaths of so many people is a scandal and all justified by hawk attitudes that never had any intention of helping the poor people who are still suffering decades later.

The west and Russia before should be ashamed of the way they have treated the ordinary people on the ground..

So Britain, Russia and america..3 of the most powerful countries in the world at the time were just unlucky.

No we just do not need afghanistan when we can focus elsewhere. Mission accomplished. If Chinese want it well it's a opportunity

You lost the war... Period!

No objectives where met. Taliban agreed it's all them now. Fun times ahead. Not a loss when we gained knowledge on weapons systems. Hence why the Humvees where left there. Bigger and badder equipment. Lessons JTLV is 100 times better. IED sweepers where non existent got them now too. So pulling back and making more is a prudent choice. More money for R&D. Call it a loss it truly is not.

This Taliban with Humvee is a bigger problem than Taliban with a Toyota pick up but what do I know.

Toyota Hilux just as rugged as a technical.

I’m reminded of the arrogant British forces in red coats invading Zulu land. .

And the immigrants in the US wiping out the native Indians.

It all was going so easily until the natives of both countries got their hands on guns!!

It’s ok we’ve got better guns isn’t really the point.. but yes I agree the Toyota is a tough piece of kit!

Your right conventional warfare out the window now. The past 20years proved that with technology not needing massive armies on the ground. Drones and a QRF small units is the new way. Lessons learned schools are built now. Technology is caught up it takes years to train and adapt. No need to send troops inmasse.

10 years and countless lives is a long lesson

And we adapted to battlefield threats. IED was biggest threat. Development sweepers and the new JTLV. Humvees did not afford overall protection. Now they do."

If we adapted and we’re in control why couldn’t our armed forces travel freely throughout the country without being armed to the teeth and backed up by strike aircraft such as the A10 ?

We had weapons but no idea how to bring the tribes and the fanatics to the table .

20 years and back to square one !

I think the way the Chinese will be better at the end game is either money and resource flooding as I said earlier. Or very large boots on the ground who do not have to worry about collateral damage or a few wedding parties.

Judging by how they treat Muslims in their own country Afghanistan will be a walk in the park. Behind a tank. !

So Britain, Russia and america..3 of the most powerful countries in the world at the time were just unlucky.

yes your right lionel, afghanistan is full of super fighters no one can ever beat? lol or its not worth that much effort chasing men in and out of caves? like when the romans stopped at scotland and thought... really.. we want to go there! lets just build a wall lol

oh sorry, in your mind scotland was full of super fighters to and the romans had no fucking chance? lol

if china really wants to defeat and control afghanistan it will, it stands a pretty good chance of defeating any nation on earth. several at a time i should imagine. But perhaps those bullet proof Afghanistan super heroes will save us?

I think the way the Chinese will be better at the end game is either money and resource flooding as I said earlier. Or very large boots on the ground who do not have to worry about collateral damage or a few wedding parties.

Judging by how they treat Muslims in their own country Afghanistan will be a walk in the park. Behind a tank. !

Thats my thoughts to.... no putting soldiers on trial when they get home... think the taliban might want us back lol"

Lol or is this a start of a proxy war with the Chinese.

"Quite a thread.

The trillions (literally) spent on a war in Afghanistan was to develop technology and tactics...to combat a new form of warfare created by what happened in Afghanistan

China is going to invade Afghanistan and kill indiscriminately because...

Seriously?

Well the UK wouldn't be investing in troop training at fort Polk Louisiana. A mock Muslim city named atropia. For no reasons.

A mock "Muslim" city? What makes it "Muslim" city? Where your head at with that comment?

Would anybody be building a mock "Muslim" city if these counties hadn't been invaded to start with this changing the geographies and methods of conflict?

Umm exercise rattlesnake. Your own army participating in."

I will try again.

How is a "Muslim" city different to a city?

If we hadn't invaded Afghanistan and Iraq we would need to develop new tactics and weapons to contract asymmetric warfare, because it would not have practiced on us, because we would not ha e been there.

They are a success to train future military personnel don't see you understand that. Just ike lessons from past military conflict dating back ages. Blitzkrieg lessons learned. Aircraft carriers over battleships . Lessons learned. Shall I keep going ? Today better equipment to counter asymmetrical threats lessons learned. Drone use on the battlefield for a multitude of applications. Lessons learned. Weapons applied to a different type of warfare and tactics wow lessons learned. Its not that at all!, it's about being more adept at diplomacy and less arrogance, looking at other countries and trying to "fix things"

One example : American meddling in iran by toppling the government which backfired (1950s i thunk) due to McArthy paranoia and now have a regime that's there now.

Iraq, syria, fermenting new terrorist organisations. Thank god Russia blocked a full american invasion of syria, otherwise more carnage would have followed

Its how weapons are used, how do you account for high Civilian casualties? , 100s of thousands easy, and war crimes being covered up until chelsea manning and julian Assange publicised them. So theres a long way to go in terms of how America conducts itself, thy should take a look at themselves before demonising other countries like Russia, iran, China.

FIBUA (Fighting in a Built-Up Areas) has been part of military training for many, many years.

The question is not about what training is for. The question is what distinguishes Fighting in a Built-Up "Muslim" Area from a "non-Muslim" one?

Secondly, wwould you need to learn how to defend against a new form of warfare if you had not created the conditions under which this new form of warfare was created.

Do you understand that you are addressing a completely different thing?

Who said that the military does not matter?

The military deserves the best equipment and the best training.

It also needs good political leadership that only puts them in harms way when there as an absolute need and a clear plan to end the engagement.

Dose that work for both of you?

Did the new equipment a result of R&D to a threat not anticipated?

Did they get that "Best equipment" for protection? Did the modern warfighter learn lessons yes or no? Did they adjust and train for future conflicts ? To have peace prepare for wars.
