Well, it basically went something like this:
If you follow England (the team that is) you may be showing more of your Imperialistic tendencies than your Patriotic ones and if you are showing your Patriotic tendencies then you are probably an Ethnocentrist.
Panel please discuss (radio programme, that is).
Say what?
Only the BBC could be this far behind the curve!

If you mean The Moral Maze, I listened to it. I listen to it regularly.
That you've oversimplified what was said is no surprise - especially just to have a go at the BBC - but it's good that you at least made the attempt to listen.
Bottom line, they examined if supporting the England football team encourages the sort of imperialist/racist/English exceptionalism rooted in the past.
They didn't show that it did. England is full of those sorts of people - but all the football does is make them more visible; they need no encouragement to be the way they are.
Is it wrong they are that way? I'd say no. Unless they're resorting to violence or committing and other crimes; they're as entitled as any other person to an outpouring of nationalism/patriotism as anyone else.
The programme did - wrongly - suggest that when the English indulge themselves this way, it's worse than it is when the Scots, Welsh and Irish do it. Clearly, it's not.
That said, there is, without question, in Westminster, an attitude of 'English nationalism good - Scots nationalism bad'. It's mirrored in Holyrood, the other way.
Either both are right, or both are wrong. People not accepting that is what causes friction - by double standards.
Anyway, don't take my word for it - or the OP's. Listen to it for yourself:

And the only similarity was:

Maybe it's the type of patriotism or what you are celebrating?
Look at national anthems..other countries celebrate how wonderful their countries are..we celebrate kissing the arse of a family of parasites.
Personally I'm proud about some things as the NHS..and I have absolutely nothing in common with simpletons who celebrate a conflict which finished 80 years ago and our colonial past. |

"I have absolutely nothing in common with simpletons who celebrate a conflict which finished 80 years ago and our colonial past."
The very point of one part of the programme was that if you live with our colonial past in your head, you are always going to feel that way.
Perhaps we need to let that part go in so much as to live properly and emotionally profitably in our present, and stop apologising on a daily basis for that part of our history. We know what our past is. We have in many ways come to a proper understanding of it.
There are few countries in the history of person-kind that didn't have a colonial something or other.
We do ourselves injury forever living in that same moment.

You answer your own question. With the word 'simpletons'.
It's akin to name-calling - some people just never grow up and out of it. |

So Radio 4 had two programs about this in a few days? Because it was certainly the topic for TMM this week.
I loved Orwell's explanation of the difference between patriotism and nationalism: the former is (I am probably paraphrasing here) something you don't want to impose on other people. |

'The Netherlands' most violent and thuggish set of fans are those of Feyenoord Rotterdam.
With more riots, fan brawls, fan injuries and deaths than most teams in the league combined, it is no doubt the worst group to mess with just across from the English Channel.'

Yet the pm of this country, who you never seem to have an issue with, ignored advice and gave a peerage to a Russian oligarch.

Why is it when anybody these days says anything it is instantly labelled ?? I was a union rep for many a year trying to better colleagues working conditions but instantly you get called a commie or Every comment from a Labour MP is your fault !!! I've you support a different football team to someone else you don't instantly have to hate your local rivals and sling obscenities at every opposing fan !!! This country at the minute is just so full of hate it sickens me it seems to be divide and conquer !! Brexit , covid , Corbyn , Boris and the royals so much hate !!! FFS !!! If someone booed my national anthem I would be even more determined to beat them . |

"The very point of one part of the programme was that if you live with our colonial past in your head, you are always going to feel that way.
Perhaps we need to let that part go in so much as to live properly and emotionally profitably in our present"
perhaps you should try writing to the PM and ask him to desist his populist nationalist culture war if your that concerned about it |

"Well, it basically went something like this:
If you follow England (the team that is) you may be showing more of your Imperialistic tendencies than your Patriotic ones and if you are showing your Patriotic tendencies then you are probably an Ethnocentrist.
Panel please discuss (radio programme, that is).
Say what?
Only the BBC could be this far behind the curve!
"
Well when you include songs like “two world wars and one World Cup” “10 German bombers” and “no surrender to the IRA” you could understand why it could be perceived to be more jingoistic than nationalistic” |

Difference on a lions tour if you ever to go on one, is that the supporters sing all the songs from all the different countries…
You sing Jerusalem, flower of Scotland, bread of heaven and molly malone, ect…it’s all inclusive |

"Which was exactly the discussion."
Well then maybe the answer is to stop singing them… and outing those that do!
I’ve heard some horrendous songs being sung back in the day when I used to stand right at the back of the north bank at Highbury…. It stopped when people called out others for starting them! |

"What is the English national anthem anyway?
Jerusalem
"green and pleasant land" etc etc...
Religiously sung before any England cricket games!
... and used at the Commonwealth Games.
"
That’s probably because God Save the Queen is the royal anthem of the commonwealth countries that do not have their own royal anthem.
Also Jerusalem is just as shit as gstq. |

Interestingly when the Commonwealth Games Council for England asked the public to decide which anthem to use, Jerusalem was a clear winner with 52%. Land of Hope and Glory second with 32% and God Save The Queen in third with 12%.

Correct. England doesn't have a national anthem"
Indeed. So why not write one? Pretty Vacant, by the Sex Pistols might do, until you come up with something even more representative. |

Our ‘patriotism’ ended after the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony…a true celebration of the best of us: inclusivity, the NHS, diversity, tolerance, the massive contribution of working people since the industrial revolution…since then successive tories have wrapped themselves in the flag and exploited division and fear of outsiders…the ‘nasty’ party have screwed us big time…and screwed ‘one nation’ tories who we might not agree with but had a genuine sense of public service |
