“The parliament, law courts, schools and hospitals are all based on the British model. The British gave Sri Lanka modern roads and railways and
introduced tea estates and the tourist industry. They rediscovered ruined cities and established the elegant Colombo national museum.”
All together now three cheers for the Empire ! |

Strange topic to start.
Contries not invaded by Britain achieved this left to their own devices.
Were/are Sri Lankans and other nationalities inferior in some way that they could not have done this without subjugation?
They, amazingly, had roads, irrigation, cities, medicine and education. Sri Lanka had a civil legal code long before the British arrived.
The British killed lots of Sri Lankans and installed themselves as rulers.
Western schools and hospitals were not provided for natives. They were constructed and provided free after the British left.
Imported foreign labour laid the basis of an ethnic conflict that has lasted generations.
Britain constrained the national economy to specialise in producing specific crops for the needs of the UK and preventing its natural development.
Sri Lankans very happy without tea estates and tourism.
Rail was constructed using the money created in Sri Lanka through corrupt selection processes limited to British companies.
Pretty much the same as happened in every colony.
Curious how they were all left impoverished and ethnically/tribally split.
Cricket's OK.
No cheers for the British Empire by any country that it invaded but it was useful for enriching the UK.
Beyond me why anyone would think otherwise. |

Sri Lanka's peak was during the reign of Parakrramabahu the Great until AD 1186.
Kalinga Magha raided and looted Sri Lanka in 1215, causing ethnic divisions, your complaints should be directed to him. |

Well done you.
Like many, Sri Lankans are very polite and tolerant of people that they "know".
You probably "know" some black and homosexual peoe who agree with you on your opinion on how they feel as well. |

The OP was actually written by a Sri Lankan immigrant, Mr Rohan Fernando of Epsom, Surrey, in a letter to the Times last Thursday.

Sure. There are Jews for Jesus too
One letter written to The Times (or even several praising the Empire in gushing terms) mean that a majority or even several other Sri Lankans agree with him? He appears to have similar views about benefits to India.
"Big deal" is relative in a pond.
It does provoke some thought, but more about you and "Rohan Fernando" who is a curiously vocal supporter of and apologist for the British Empire.
Read all sources, not just the ones you want to.
Just thought I'd help you out with your self-congratulation
You did get some more attention though, which is what you wanted I guess |
