" Original OP: "Amazon to create more than 10,000 new UK jobs this year The online retailer's plans were hailed by business secretary Kwasi Kwarteng as a vote of confidence in the British economy." Amazon has announced plans to create more than 10,000 new permanent jobs in the UK this year. The online retail giant is opening new operations in Hinckley, Doncaster, Dartford, Gateshead and Swindon in 2021 and is also hiring for corporate roles as well as its cloud-computing division Amazon Web Services. Amazon's latest recruitment drive, hailed by the government as a "vote of confidence in the British economy", will take its total UK workforce to more than 55,000." __________________________________ Last post in 2: By Debbie69 6 minutes ago Find it sad that people are so negative about job creation in this country. If it was job cuts they would rightly complain yet when the opposite happens and many thousands of jobs are announced they still complain. Odd that when asked if the same jobs are announced in the EU would that also be bad I get no answer. Basically this is not how post brexit should be according to some so they just can't make all these new jobs work in their theories of doom and gloom ___________________________" I agree - we have lost lots of jobs in the Pandemic, but we also found lots of jobs in new areas. As we start to pick up again any announcement of jobs has got to be a good one.

The FTSE 250 is close to ( or at ) an all time high b. Four companies in the FTSE 250 were the subject of take over bids in the last two weeks. It looks like we are on a post Brexit roll . People will simply have to accept it. There is however one cloud on the horizon and potentially a serious one . The cost of construction materials is rising substantially

"I am just looking for clarity on the word ‘new’ ? I’m thinking ...your rosewood chairs are not ‘new’, but for you ...they are ‘new’ " The chairs are new (additional) because I didn’t have them before . Back to Amazon, as a consumer they are amazing, I use them all the time, they have created thousands of ‘new ‘ jobs, they have also caused companies to cease trading or scale back causing thousands off job losses. This isn’t a criticism of Amazon but a reality and the way the world is moving towards online shopping

Fantastic for Dunhelm and I’m very pleased for them. Online cheaper costs and selective retail concentration is a winner for them. The following is a quickly compiled list of jobs probably lost once furlough ends and the true figures comes through. Administrators are able to furlough. The big ones we know are gone like Debenhams . Doesn’t look to rosy to me as the total on this short list is just over 45k jobs. People who say there is no problem on the high street need to open their eyes . Of course there will be firms who adapt but these names will take some replacing, especially with online growing ever more powerful. Bonmarche 1500 Arcadia 13000 Peacock and Yeager 4700 My& ,Co 381 DE Sports 1700 Oliver Sweeny 100 Peter Jone China 70 Benson for Beds 1700 at risk TM Lewin 600 jobs Bertram Books. 450 Le Pain Quotiden 200 Monsoon. 545 Victoria’s Secret 800 Antler 164 Oasis 1000 Debenhams 12000 Catch Kitson 900 Autonomy clothing 40 Lambock 43 Bright house 2000 Laura Ashley 1669 TJ Hughes 80 Hawkins bazaar 170 Beales 1000 Edinburgh Woollen Mill 300 I also read how many firms are in rescue deals that will cherry pick stores so further jobs will be lost. Good times for the high street I think not!!

"How many of them jobs are down to brexit covid or the trend in shopping changing asnt the highstreet been suffering for decades ?" Above poster claims high steer is fine. I’m saying it isn’t and celebrating more warehouse jobs at the expense of a higher number of retail jobs isn’t something to cenebrste as it’s not a positive overall. It’s our future but to sit and watch without realising the bigger picture is dangerous.

"Jackal no job losses are gud we all no that the high streets been on the slide for decades online as been the biggest challenge to them they will change forever that’s just how it is how it will change I’m fucked if I know up here they are talking about turning shops into housing " I agree it wil continue but the high street majors generally paid more tax in tne U.K. than the mega internet operators . My only point on this whole post is that those mega corporations get away with paying virtually no tax in the U.K. as our tax law isn’t designed around them. That tax law needs changing as our corporation tax take will decrease and the average PAYE earner will be filling the gap.
