the French politician claimed there were “links” between immigration and “terrorist networks that infiltrate migrational flows”.

Asked whether his comments would call into question his reputation as a moderate Gaullist, Mr Barnier said: “The problems of immigration are not moderate. I know, as the politician that I am, to see the problems how they are and how French people experience them and to find solutions.”

Blimey the EU sounding a bit prejudiced there. In terminal decline I’d say.

Biggest problem of not having borders is the ease of which those who wish to undermine the very freedoms that they enjoy can smuggle arms, drugs etc. I would go as far as to suggest that freedom of movement requires the authorities to find new ways to protect us by intelligence gathering through proactive surveillance methods. One form of freedom leads to an erosion of privacy and other freedoms. I have no problem with open or closed borders but a certain level of unease with the amount of data gathering by any and all institutions from the police and government down to social media. Barnier is simply highlighting what is already common knowledge, that the more open a country is, the more opportunity there is for mischief and mayhem.
