Macron says EU needs to centralise
Jump to: Newest in thread
The thrilling future of Europe conference has commenced. Macron says the answer to bureaucratic centralised slow decision making is.... more centralisation. Thank God we are out of the rubbish:
“Speaking from a TV studio set up in the middle of the hemicircle of the European parliament in Strasbourg, the French president said he hoped the Future of Europe conference, a rolling series of events and online public opinion surveys, would strengthen EU level decision-making.
Macron avoided mentioning treaty change to shift competences to EU institutions from national governments, something vehemently opposed by a large number of member state governments who might be forced to trigger referendums in response.
He instead spoke in broad terms of the difficulties experienced during the pandemic in coordinating efforts due to a lack of central powers in the field of health and the problem of decision-making being “strangled in our procedures”. The most common form of EU decision-making, including in foreign policy, is done by a “qualified majority” of support among the 27 member states.” |

"... im even more convinced that leaving was the right thing to do"
Perhaps the right thing to do was to have stayed and instigated change?
But "would've, should've, could've" is all rather academic, BREXIT is now done and dusted. |

Missed opportunity whilst we were in. Could have been driving members of centralisation and standardisation.
Pushed for a more Federalised system. We should be looking to dump all the 19th century Nationalistic bollox to progress equality.
Hey ho. Back to petty kingdoms squabbling over who controls each little irrelevant patch of mud. |

So what macron wants is quicker decisions in the eu, now even leavers would welcome that, the problem is what he is really saying is we take too long discussing things and getting consensus what we really need is for the french and germans to decide what the rest do.
AKA united states of europe with the big boys in charge |

No using the real power in the EU, the Council of Ministers. |

The US of E is of course the first stepping stone to replacing the archaic nation system we are stuck in. But that is a ways off yet. Still too many parochial people fussing about tribes.
That anchor needs to be cast off so we can progress. |

IF that is what the majority want and every nation gets a vote on it and that's the result then fine crack on. However if its drip drip by stealth to achieve it which is what is happening then it's not ok at all. Guess you dont think the Scottish should go independent then ? |

Actually I think they probably should as it is in their best interests at this time. At least they will have a chance at getting back in to the EU with all the financial, social and political benefits that brings.
And if the EU does formalise as a political union they will have to make a choice then. |
