So. It was a premotion demotion. Or was it a demotion premotion?
Angela Rayner, who was sacked on Saturday as party chair and campaign co-ordinator in a move that went down badly in Labour ranks, was appointed shadow first secretary of state and shadow secretary of state for the future of work.
"She was also given the title of shadow chancellor to the Duchy of Lancaster, the equivalent of deputy prime minister in Sir Keir's new team, and will shadow Michael Gove, as well as retain control over party matters, ahead of Ms Dodds."
errrrr? Wasn't she already the Deputy Prime Minister?

Not making himself look very clever atm. Better to have come out and said, we are going to take a long hard look at who we are and want we need to do to make ourselves relevant to voters. Sometimes honesty is the best policy. Every country needs a strong opposition. |

It looked a bit rushed which in many areas of political decisions, be that legislation etc it came unstuck..
It's only served to strengthen Rayner's position and Starmer looks weaker which will embolden the left which will keep the Tories happy.. |

Heard a labour chap on the radio Friday say part of the problem was that voters saw labour being negative all the time and seeming to enjoy being pessimistic and miserable whereas boris in particular has a positive happy persona.

That's what I've been saying, and I think tbf Angela Raynor was one of the grumpiest of the lot. From that point of view, Starmer is right to try and get rid of her.
Back in the day, there were labour shadow cabinet members you'd have a drink with whatever your beliefs.
Kinnock, Smith, Frank Dobson, even Prezza, Tony Banks, all had a happy side.
Haven't seen Starmer laughing about anything. Professional miserabilists the lot of them. |

It's backtracking.
Instead of taking the "full responsibility" that he claimed for the poor election performance, he lashed out. In doing so, he created more rifts in the party. Now it's a scramble to get everyone back onboard.
He should just be humble and accept he messed up and try and build on the few positives he's had.
