Headlines today in the Express.
What they fail to mention is that this drug is licensed for use in the EU. It's been available to EU countries since 2016.

More selective headline when, actually.
"UK gets new lung cancer drug under international scheme thanks to Brexit deal (meaning it couldn't have gotten it before it was authorised by the EU) A LUNG cancer drug has become the first treatment authorised under an international scheme the UK was able to join after Brexit."
It was project Orbis which is the US Food and Drug Administration.
"The EU will have to wait for the Sanofi version due out around 2050. "

"This authorisation is the first issued by the regulator under Project Orbis, having only joined the scheme in January 2021, following the UK’s exit from the European Union. Project Orbis is an innovative programme allowing partners from various countries to review and approve applications for promising cancer treatments quickly and efficiently. The project is co-ordinated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its other participants include Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Singapore and Brazil."

Coment below taken from where I originally read the headline...
"It's disingenuous. The article says it's a new drug.
It's not.
The drug was already licenced. It's a new application for it approved under MHRA.
It's a hollow claim."

The Express may not be so far off the truth however it is twisting it somewhat to suit their own agenda.

Tagrisso, the AZ cancer drug in question, has been around for 5 years.
Its now been licensed for use in a different set of patients, those in earlier stages of lung cancer, and these licenses were issued by the EU on April 22nd and the UK on May 7th. |
