"Landslide victory for the conservatives
Q: is it time that the Labour Party to be shelved as socialism is on the decline?
Perhaps a new middle ground party should evolve?"
They could call it New Labour. |

In most experiences Socialism tends to favour those with the reigns - the intellectuals, eventually converting themselves to such a narrow version of socialist doctrine that it simply becomes dictatorial, and before you know it, it's rife with penalties for overstepping your designated rank seeking or desires that the collective don't want you to have or control. Then come the watchers, the army of controllers, the re-education centres . . .
If you fancy a good read on the many historical yet failed tries at socialism try:
"Kristian Niemietz. 'Socialism. The Failed Idea That Never Dies'.
In it, he asserts that of the more than two dozen attempts at Socialism each has failed. . . . "

"Meanwhile Labour activists ask for Labour to return to the left.
So people are voting Tory in their droves but I know let’s go further left as a strategy. Hmmmmmmmmm
Glorious. "
If Labour move further and further to the right, they'll end up offering no really alternative to the status quo. Sure they might win power, but that won't offer an improvement for any of us.
Do they want to win, and be the same as the Tories. Or offer a real alternative, and get nowhere near to power? |

Well either way they have lost.
Time to consign them to history as serial losers.
And let my new favourites the Greens through sure they are losing now but watch this space. |

I agree, in my opinion, the main parties only care about "winning", none of them seem concerned with doing a good job of running the country. |

I’ve seen the misery firsthand what it brings. It’s not fun. But then I guess that was the “wrong” socialism. I think that’s the stock line. |

"The Unwilling Dictator" is a good book.
Choice is better, and I support the potential to change government at 4/5 year intervals. But I feel like the whole system is not set up to serve the people, but primarily to serve big business, and the rich. |

I looked to find out. God knows who actually reads the Guardian, woeful newspaper.
I'm not usually one to quote any newspaper at all. But seeing as this is the point of the post, rather than saying I am agreeing with what's said. This is what the guardian is saying at the moment:
"Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to redouble efforts to regain the trust of the British public following Labour’s defeat in Hartlepool - but he and his allies have found it hard to articulate how this could be achieved. (See 8.29am and 4.36pm.) Labour leftwingers have said he should embrace Jeremy Corbyn’s policy agenda, Lord Mandelson has said the party needs to show that it understands “Brexit values” (see 1.07pm) and Lord Adonis has effectively said that Starmer should resign" |

Some parts are ok sure,
Doesnt mean we have to start implementing Marx and engels's communist utopia do we
When you start taking away the choice of the private individual to be in control of their own economy we start to get into issues.

It's a fact a Conservative MP had the idea of the NHS and wrote the white paper on it when in Government. |

Marxism/Leninism is international socialism while Hitler wanted National Socialism |

"Meanwhile Labour activists ask for Labour to return to the left.
So people are voting Tory in their droves but I know let’s go further left as a strategy. Hmmmmmmmmm
Glorious.
The Greens hmm 5 quid to change gender Am a woman geez my pension My Polly bag collection just doubled in value and my non recycled paper straw just disintegrated "
See your getting it. Lots of bonuses.
Now how do you feel about walking to work? |

Outstanding
Socialism is evil...nasty..well apart that bit which is ok
Superb
No political party nor one person has the right ideas and ideals all the time.
Brilliant
It always amused me when people used to come on here ranting about Corbyn and when.asked just what policies do you specifically disagree with, there eas radio silence
You mean no body mentioned nationalisation of industries, giving free internet etc etc spend spend spend, no I'm sure we all supported that.
Free internet?
Yep that would have been am absolute disaster this last year wouldnt it?
Amd mass privatisation has obvs been an unqualified success.
Compared to the mess the industries were when publicly owned yes they have IN GENERAL been good.
I cant really argue with that.
We have no industries left
Rail prices have gone through the room.
The probation service has been that much of a success, its being re nationaslised.
Ditto some rail services
But on The whole its been a success.
"
Glad you agree that on the whole it has been a success.
Perhaps you should do some research before posting, while it is true that peak day time walk up prices have increased more than inflation, season ticket prices are on average no dearer when inflation is taken into account and off peak advance tickets are cheaper, passenger numbers are at record levels, of course this has led to the major gripe of overcrowding. |

"Funny the people whinging most about socialism seemed quite happy about a natinal health service running a natinal vaccination service to everyone in the country.
About as central planning as you can get.
Having a few Social policies doesnt equal socialism
Right..so that part of socialism is ok?
Some parts are ok sure,
Doesnt mean we have to start implementing Marx and engels's communist utopia do we
When you start taking away the choice of the private individual to be in control of their own economy we start to get into issues.
Plus the Nazi's had some pretty good policies when it came to the rights of the worker. Hitler was a socialist, just didnt like the Marxism–Leninism kind, in the same way he actually disliked capitalism also
Doesnt mean i want National Socialism
Sorry..I stopped reading at Hitler was a socialist
Out of curiosity..what good policies did the nazis have?"

In it, he asserts that of the more than two dozen attempts at Socialism each has failed. . . . "

The woman in Hartlepool who said about kier Starmer turning up eating fish and chips and drinking a beer to prove he was one of them sums it up lol and demonstrates your point..... a barrister... labour have lost their roots.. |

Funnily in my lifetime the present system has crashed multiple times. So many stock market crashes , so many times i have heard the unions are holding us to ransom . All the while jobs are cut, terms and conditions are bulldozed and the working class picks up the tab as the money men head for the hills....So all the crowing from Tories at labours problems only can be put down to arrogance, or the belief that your own children will not end up in the gig economy, zero hour contracts and no pensions ...It will not end well for any of us regardless of who we vote for |

Everyone gets to enrol into a work pension so you're wrong there.
What terms and conditions have been bulldozed ?
Up to the start of the pandemic job numbers were at record levels, perhaps looking at facts instead of listening to lies might help.
Anyone can lose their job or business, it's how you respond is key.
However I most firmly believe that the poorer areas of the country need more help, that too many governments over the last 30 years have relied on the London money economy at the expense of "real" jobs and trades, Boris has said he is going to redress that balance, I'm sure the voters in the north will hold him to it, after they over the last couple of years have done that to labour,we had 13 years of labour in which they took over a booming economy, why didn't THEY bring more to the north, especially as Blair represented a northern constituency? They are too london based also, |

Labour did not take over a booming economy whatsoever.
Labour provided many Jobs in the north, lots of public sector jobs and set out on rebuilding the NHS and schools which Thatcher had left to rot. |

In fact it would appear in County Durham many many Labour voters have been walking away shaking their heads... and crossing the Conservative, LibDem and Independent ballot paper boxes.
Bishop Auckland went Blue at the GE (Helen Godman who was the previous Labour MP for years and years even failed in her bid this time to become a county councillor ), Darlington - Blue, Hartlepool - Blue, North West Durham - Blue, Sedgefield - Blue . City of Durham - Red but with a much reduced majority ....
At what point do Labour stop blaming others for their own failings - whatever they may be . |

My big hope with SKS was that he would not do the traditional Labour thing and blame, brexit, corbyn, the voters, Labour are not in power so can't be our fault we lost a bi election ect ect. We need a strong opposition as that benifits us all |

Try looking at facts not make believe, nhs spending as a percentage of gdp was higher for all but two years during MT time than it was during the previous labour time before, gdp growth was also higher .
Why creating public sector jobs that have to be paid for by taxes is seen as good I have no idea, the north need jobs that create wealth not absorb it |

why did the voters in Hartlepool vote tory? I think they thought they might get more money out of Westminster with a government MP. Kier & many prominent labour politicians did not respect the leave vote in the referendum, he needs to apologise to Brexit voters & put forward a clear philosophy & policy for the future. |

In it, he asserts that of the more than two dozen attempts at Socialism each has failed. . . . "
The woman in Hartlepool who said about kier Starmer turning up eating fish and chips and drinking a beer to prove he was one of them sums it up lol and demonstrates your point..... a barrister... labour have lost their roots..
It's quite often I vote for people on the basis of what they eat and drink tbf
you must be odd then lionel! or do you just like to make daft contrary comments?
the woman went on to say, does he really think that sort of stunt wins votes, it shows a contempt for the voters of hartlepool, as if he thinks they all have a whippet and a flat cap... fact is labour did nothing for the area...
Well as they were not in power thats hardly a surprise.
Did the winning candidate come from hartlepool?
are you on drugs? hartlepool has always had a labour council...! well until now..
I camt believe I have to spell this out for you..as it seems to be a widely held perception.. labour do not run the country..the gmbt do..I've just seen 2 people from hartlepool blaming labour for the lack of hospitals.. its genuinely surreal.
we are talking about the elections, the council elections! obviously you think everyone in hartlepool is stupid for voting conservative lol when they should have just carried on voting labour for the rest of their lives like good boys and girls, proper working class people? like grandad did? lol
Oh dear
People have been interviewed in hartlepool saying they voted tory beciade of the cuts made to the likes of the nhs.
I'll type this out slowly.
The labour party did not make these cuts.
ill say it slowly to, the thread is about local elections. BUT hartlepool have given labour (local and national) a very long run.....
But you think one person making a silly comment is what threw the vote?!!!!! "
Last go.
People have voted on national issues in local elections
Hence the actual example I have provided above (hospitals)
You yourself have provided an example of people not liking starmer.
Last time I checked starmer wasnt the local candidate.

Yet actually . . .
"Up here, Mr Johnson was massively bolstered by local Tory Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen's huge personal following.
"He's the only one who's ever done anything for us," is how a cab driver in Darlington put it to me.
A freeport, a revived local airport, people in the North East region see a new band of Tory MPs and a Conservative mayor bringing investment into the region, and that has built momentum going into the Hartlepool by-election.
The calculation for plenty of voters here is that nothing really improved for decades voting Labour, so why not give the Conservatives a chance." |

Outside of a militants classroom and Budenovka wearing Stalinists: Socialism in the West is a failed thought exercise and a romantic notion of marching forward while happily tilling the land for the great emancipation of the people. Forgetting all the time that there never has been a socialism anywhere in the world that hasn't resulted in failure and persecution of the very people it says it serves. There has never actually been a Socialism in the West.
Mature politics never embraced it, even in the Labour Party. So no matter how many copies of Socialist worker that you buy and read you have to at some point realize that it's just a Comic full of fanciful stories from a long gone past. It's time to grow-up and put such notions behind you. |

I suppose there is a certain irony in saying how much of a failure socialism has been, when the only thing the buffoon has got right,is to use a system created by a socialist gmnt.
Whereas the capitalist side, ppe contracts, reaching and trace..have been such a success

No one said its perfect, but its better.
But i dont see anyone in capitalist countries being executed for wearing glasses do you?
I dont see anyone in capitilist countries getting the whole population to kill sparrows ending in famine and the starvation of millions
I dont see anyone in capitilist countries being pulled out there farms and beaten to death for the crime of just ownership and employing people
3 different examples from 3 different socialist regimes.
Thats just scr aping the surface
I guess they just where not the right type of socialism |

Then come the watchers, the army of controllers, the re-education centres . . .
If you fancy a good read on the many historical yet failed tries at socialism try:
"Kristian Niemietz. 'Socialism. The Failed Idea That Never Dies'.
In it, he asserts that of the more than two dozen attempts at Socialism each has failed. . . . "
And resulted in persecution and many millions of deaths
As opposed to capitalism which has spread peace And love around the world?
No one said its perfect, but its better.
But i dont see anyone in capitalist countries being executed for wearing glasses do you?
I dont see anyone in capitilist countries getting the whole population to kill sparrows ending in famine and the starvation of millions
I dont see anyone in capitilist countries being pulled out there farms and beaten to death for the crime of just ownership and employing people
3 different examples from 3 different socialist regimes.
Thats just scr aping the surface
I guess they just where not the right type of socialism
Do I really need to lost some of the atrocities carried out under the name of capitalism?"
As i said better, not perfect. Nothing is perfect that would be Utopia which arguably can never exist until post scarcity. Even then arguements could be made any Utopia in reality is a Dystopia
What atrocities can you name in the last 100 ish years that have been done expressly because of capitalist ideology and especially committed on a states own populace?
And tbh I wouldnt count proxy wars between the West and Russia or China during the Cold War as they could be seen as wars against socialist aggression and expansion

World war 1 and world war 2 were absolutely nothing to do with communism
Hitler murdered 6 million people and he was no communist.
Iraq and Afghanistan
So are you saying Vietnam for example was justified because it was a war against communism? |

WW1 started because of Imperialism not Capitalism, they are not the same. Capitalism is based on voluntary exchange that benefits all parties involved, imperialism is based on exploitation and the exercise of political power, generally backed by a military force.
So you are just going to ignore what i have said about Hitler and his want for National Socialism not international socialism like Marxism then i guess. The war started because of Hitlers want of living space (Lebensraum) for the German people. Most likely for increased food production that it would allow. Nothing to do with the free trade between people. Oh and it was more than 6 million, fucks me off that people spout that number because it completely ignores the rest. Actual number is more like 14 million
Iraq and Afghanistan was to try and install Democractic goverment and remove legimate terrorist threats from a country.Russia did the same, but wanted to install a socialist goverment, not a free and democratic one. Oh and they crushed people under Tanks as a punishment for working with the Mujahideen. Ofcourse there is an arguement that behind the scenes people wanted the war for Oil or to sate the military industrial complex
Vietnam yes i think the war itself was quite justified to stop the march of the NVA even though ultimately it was a failure. Their war for independance i agree with, just not the people that hijacked it for their own idelogical gain. Agreeing with the reasoning of war doesnt mean i agree with tactics that are used however. Same with Korea |

Imperialism is another facet of capitalism.
Both wars were absolutely nothing to do with socialism /communism.
If you think Iraq in particular was nothing to do with oil, there isnt much I can say to that.
Hitler was as far from a socialist as it's likely to be.
He thought an ideological war against communism as he considered them (untermenshen(sp?)
He wanted to crush bolshevism.
So in terms of Vietnam, it's perfectly acceptable to invade a country, because you dont like the politics of some of the people? |

Ignore my point about oil.
The fact remains countless people died in iraq and afghan because of a war started by a capitalist power.
Again nothing whatsoever to do with capitalism
God knows how many deaths the Americans have been responsible for, down the years. |

Socialism Kills its own people for ideology. Along with invading other countries and killing them.
Capitalism goes to war against socialism and the ideology it peddles. Then makes money out the rebuild and steals the oil.
Funny old world.
However I’ve lived under socialism and it’s not fun. Give me capitalism any day.
Europe is turning right and turning it’s back on it. Socialism is a dead concept at the moment and a dirty word in the media. It’s what made Corbyn toxic he was slathered in it.

You know socialist regimes dont agree and fight each other right? Spain for example during 1936 to 1939. You know Bolshevism isnt the only socialist doctrine? He disliked both Capitalism and Bolshevism as he thought both where Jewish plots. Just because he used some aspects of capiltism to his advantage doesnt mean that was the end goal, remember Hitler had twelve years in the end to try and install what he wanted. The USSR had nearly a hundred and still failed.
Again i recommend you do a bit of research into his private conversations with mostly Otto Wagener. Interesting stuff and shows you it wasnt as straight forward as Hitler = Capitalist = Facist. Life is alot more grey than that
When that "some" try to impose their will with force over the majority then yeah i do i guess |

It's quite weird how socialism is such a discredited concept, yet some of the most progressive and happiest places on the planet, denmark,Norway etc happily embrace many socialist policies.
Whilst a kingdom that despises them is about as divided as its possible to be.
Weird. |

You are talking "Gleichschaltung" which was the co-ordination of all aspects of life in Germany to fit in with Hitler's ideas and his authority. Again because he thought they were socialists of the wrong type.
Just like how factions in Spain ended up fighting each other. POUM(Anti-Stalionist)vs the PCE and PSUC who were pro Stalin |

Who is paying back furlough? Or SEISS? Or the business rates grants? Or the extra UC payments?
Increased tax,pay freezes
You mean all of us?
Would it be likely that these things may have happened anyway?
As they were, to the people who received them, they were most definitely handouts. Those don't have to personally pay them back. I know, i received some.
Ignoring my point about corbs?
Ignoring my point that at times, handouts are needed. Just not all the time.
And I've said how can it be handout, if its paid back?
It doesnt really matter who by..that money shelled out will be recouped."
Because it's not paid back by the person receiving it. Ergo, handout |

"It's quite weird how socialism is such a discredited concept, yet some of the most progressive and happiest places on the planet, denmark,Norway etc happily embrace many socialist policies.
Whilst a kingdom that despises them is about as divided as its possible to be.
Weird.
How many times do you have to be told that having some socialist policies is not the same as socialism.
So socialism is a dead concept but socialist policies are fine?
There you have it. Some policies, regardless of where they originate are interchangeable.
I know you may struggle with that but it's clear.
Did you see the amount of handouts the governement has given to the citizens of the UK last year?

"Irony..
The lost concept."
"noun: irony
the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect."
So if you actually apply your stated 'irony' statement to your argument you are agreeing with us then.

You suggested socialist policies were acceptable and when I asked why did a politician who advocated such policies, was labelled a dangerous communist, you chose not to answer.

"Landslide victory for the conservatives
Q: is it time that the Labour Party to be shelved as socialism is on the decline?
Perhaps a new middle ground party should evolve?
They could call it New Labour. "
Or call themselves what they are red Tories. |
