But it's not associated with your name. Once in the ballot box it cannot be connected back to you.
I would imagine it is there for anti-vote rigging reasons. |

This.
It's to make the voting slips unique. If there is more than one voting form with the same number on, they know someone has tried to commit voting fraud.
It isn't linked to your name in any way. |

Since a long, long time at least, my (long-deceased) father queried it when numbered voting slips were first introduced.

Oh yes it is! The scrutineer notes the number of the slip he/she has given you against the voters’ list. In theory, the slips once in the ballot box can only be checked against that list “in exceptional circumstances and with a Court Order”, in practice scrawl “I’m gonna bomb Number 10” on your (numbered) voting slip and see how long it takes before Special Branch comes knocking on your door!
More ridiculous is the fact that whenever I’ve voted no ID was requested and after I’d voted, my facetious “And now what happens when the REAL Mr Jones comes in to vote?” was met with blank stares. |

This poster is dead right. Any political party can and do trawl through voting slips matched by serial number against the voters listings so they know exactly who voted for who.
Also right about not requiring any ID. In this day and age of technology they still just ask you for your name and address along with your voting card. It is a pathetically weak and poor system and open to fraud. |

This poster is dead right. Any political party can and do trawl through voting slips matched by serial number against the voters listings so they know exactly who voted for who.
Also right about not requiring any ID. In this day and age of technology they still just ask you for your name and address along with your voting card. It is a pathetically weak and poor system and open to fraud.

I don't think that's correct. A court order, following an accusation of serious tampering, is required for that. So they can't just "trawl" through.
Voting fraud is pretty rare, therefore it is better to keep voting more accessible by not requiring any ID. |

Yes... as I've explained, the scrutineer has a list of those eligible to vote at that polling station. When you present yourself with the postcard that’s come through your door (or simply say “I’m Mr Jones”), he/she gives you a numbered voting slip and records that number against your name, ostensibly so that “Mr Jones” can’t vote twice. So VERY easy to find the person who used that voting slip… |

Could be worse, the information commissioner is now looking into Sinn Fein and their voter database for all of Ireland. Imagine that lol, you really might have to vote the right way there or else its a knee capping:
