It was the decade that saw the end of major manufacturing and heavy industry. Thatcher destroyed so many communities most of which never really recovered. She has also been the one who planted the seeds of nationalism that is tearing the Uk apart.

But as her supporters got rich and displayed the empathy for which they are renowned it led to her being reviled in half and lauded in the other half of the Uk

The unions destroyed the coal industry not MT,she saved the uk car industry from.red robbo and his mates by getting the Japanese companies to come here and drag the whole industry into the 20th century.

There is very little nationalism in the UK especially england, look at how we celebrate st George's day compared to the others in the UK and the rest of the world, go to the states and see how they believe in their country. Nationalism is just an insult chucked out by people who didnt want brexit

The movers were a belligerent lot as were the car workers. They needed bringing into line but also the manager of both was atrocious.

MT planned to get revenge on the miners even before she came to power. Her and Tebbitt planned their downfall.

Scargill was too stupid to see the trap they had laid.

The country needed change which I welcomed but she went too far with backing banking and services over industry. We lost a huge skilled workforce. It’s why we now import so much and make so much less.

I personally thought the unions at the time got too political and forgot their core aim to protect workers rights and jobs. Striking constantly was never going to do that. I personally had regular run ins with un-sackable dockers so know how stupid it got.

I’m not saying all unions are bad as they most certainly aren’t. I think U.K. management skills were appalling on top of some belligerent unions.

The English disease brought us to our knees.

But the horrific lack of investment in long term industries as no infrastructure is now why we are so less powerful as an economic force.

Our roads and rail lines are a joke. The vanity project of HS2 could have been better spent on upgrading local rail, and roads

Infrastructure is key to a better economy and for at least 50 years we have failed to invest all the road tax. Now we are creaking along.

"It was the decade that saw the end of major manufacturing and heavy industry.

Unfortunately, Nationalism in the UK has been hijacked by racists and the far right

Hijacked by a media that tells you it's far right racism.

You have obviously never been to an England football match

Yep...was there when St. David Healy scored the winner against England last time they came to Windsor park

Couldn't help but notice the mass of racists in attendance . A lot of whom were people of colour. Not just the players btw

You've obviously been brainwashed and gas lit by the media also. "

There was 100% more sectarianism than white supremacy and racism chanted in the stand....but you'd know that already because you were there. right?

Congratulations! English and Irish people were chanting sectarian slogans at a football game.

What YOU said was 'you have obviously never been to an England football match'. Your premise was that everyone that attends England games was racist...and that's obvious bullshit. That's not to say that some racists never go to England games. I would say that a very tiny minority are knuckle dragging racists but the massive majority are not. Your media may convince you otherwise though.

I never said that all England’s fans are racist, but lets be honest, the English have a bad reputation for hooligans, far right groups attending games and racism (which is on the increase again) . I have witnessed this first hand and although the vast majority are well behaved football fans it is the scum that ruin it

You have obviously never been to an England football match

Remind me about the battle of Wembley, will you tar the whole Scottish nation with the same brush as a few idiots.

No, when was that?

1977

Right, have you heard of the

EDL

National Front

Britain First

England first party

National Action

The British Hand

Etc etc

What percentage of the uk population support their ideals?

I'm a very proud uk citizen, we have done an enormous amount of good in the world, we have often led the world in scientific discoveries, we have a huge number of different nationalities living in harmony, it's a shame you are ashamed of that.

Of course over the years we have done a few things we arent proud of.

I have no idea, you are obviously missing my point, I am not criticising nationalism I am pointing out that unfortunately it has been hijacked by racists and far right groups . "

The same as BLM being hijacked by the far left as well

There were certainly some managers that took the easy route rather than take on the unions and in the public sector there are still many useless ones, K always says in her experience of a lifetime in the nhs they just promote the worse out of the way.

The big car companies, steel businesses werent "owned" by any sleazy owners nor were the mines so you are well wide of the mark.

I believe that unions are needed and can be a force for good, I also believe that there are some very poor managers about. However in the 70's the unions seemed more intent on destroying businesses not working with them to the benefit of everyone.

The unions in the 70s were dealing with mine owners and not just the NCB who were still using machinery from the turn of the century. The deaths toll and conditions leading to the premature deaths from inhaling coal dust and asbestos were a disgrace, The same on the shipyards ...so you tell me if delaying a health and safety case till the complainent has died is not the work of a sleazy owner ?....With no trades unions we would still be in the dark ages, Thatcher is lauded as some kind of heroine for curbing union power. This has now given us the gig economy and other zero hour type employment....It is a disgrace and makes me wonder how foolish some are who fall for the unions were destroying the country drivel.....Oh of course that line was peddled by the Tories and the well know socialist Rupert Murdoch. A plague on both their houses i say

from 1947 when the mines were nationalised labour shut more per year they were in power than the tories.

Health and safety in mining improved over time, but again both parties could have done more, UK kids wont pick fruit these days so doubt many would want to work in a coal mine.
