https://news.sky.com/story/the-biggest-by-election-in-more-than-a-decade-set-to-be-a-referendum-on-starmers-new-leadership-12274397

"It will provide the first electoral evidence of whether the fall of Labour's red wall to the Tories in 2019 was a temporary aberration, driven by Brexit uncertainty and a dislike of Jeremy Corbyn, and shows Sir Keir Starmer doing the job for which he was elected in key parts of the North."

Here's a great subject to get your teeth into? Any thoughts?

I honestly think we’re about to witness maybe the collapse of the party as we know it.

Anecdotal I know, but I don’t know anyone who openly supports Labour anymore. So many of my friends and family and Wolf’s are now politically homeless. And we’re both from red wall communities

"Here's a great subject to get your teeth into? Any thoughts?"

Labour under Starmer are Tory-lite. Utterly pointless, devoid of ideas or desire for meaningful change.

Should appeal the demographic that voted for Blair and New Labour.

Do you think the Blairites are still a force in the party tho? I’ve not really seen much evidence of a ‘scouring’ of the party of the Corbynistas other than the main man himself.

I don't have much connection to anyone in Labour. The people I knew who where have drifted away over the last year, not renewing their memberships.

They're definitely going for the centre right voter. It's a clear tactic from the general not-rocking-the-boat policies, having Starmer in front of the union jack etc.

I don't know how many Blairites there are still about. But the party wants to go for the similar voter demographic.

Labour should have been all over the Torys this past year. They had a real chance to make ground but blew it. I can’t believe the polls.

Labour are simply rubbish. Look at how many times they have been in power post war. It’s laughable.

They need to find someone with charismaaaaaaaaaaa! (Toast of London reference)

You think it's a lack of charisma in their leadership?

The majority of the press in this country is Tory supporting or neutral. They have less funding than the Tories. They face an uphill battle, even when their policies score a lot higher on those blind policy selection tests, usually second behind the green party.

I'm not saying your wrong. For me personally, the charisma of the leader is not a factor when I choose which candidate or party to vote for. Besides most of the leaders we have had in my lifetime have been utterly vile and self serving.

Sadly charisma is a vital characteristic. Look at how slick Blair was. Look at Boris and his bluster. It’s all carefully coordinated. Boris isn’t stupid he can tap into the Everyman.

But then you get people like John Major and Bush. So I could be wrong

I'm not that bothered about charisma. If they really do move centre-right then they have a whole load of votes they could pick up.

But, they need seem really decent policies. Sitting on the fence isn't gonna work.

Can probably say the same about the blue corner. It's going to be more voting for the least worst option than people with genuine beliefs and convictions and policies. Sadly it's all personality and populist led now rather than policy led.

Let’s not get stuck on solely being charismatic I just think it’s a vital component especially during this era of social media politics.

Not that it will ever happen but I think we are crying out for a unity parliament. Take the best and most credible from all sides and you might just about get a parliament together. Build trust in our democratic system again which has been torn asunder.

What we've got isn't working, I don't think anyone wants what we've got. We need better.

You may not find it an interesting option but there's a large portion of the left who will vote for them regardless, plus the uptake from the centre-right. I'm not sure on numbers but I'd hazard a guess at that actually being the largest demographic in this country.

They stand a good chance.

I've said it before, trouble with Keir is being a lawyer he is constantly terrified of saying anything significant or interesting.

He thinks he can bring the whole country together in some weird coalescing miasma.

Blair was also backed my Murdoch

Once labour moved to the centre they not only lost Scotland they also lost big chunks of the north aswell who felt left behind.

Corbyn gets a lot of stick but people forgot how disastrous they were under Miliband.

You could argue the reason for Brexit was because labour left behind its core voters.

They're trying to attract the centre right. They're putting all their eggs in this basket.

I've no idea if it will work for them or not.

Them being Tory-lite might win then votes, but that seems pointless. If their aim is to be slightly less shit than the Tories. Then personally, I don't find that an interesting option.

You may not find it an interesting option but there's a large portion of the left who will vote for them regardless, plus the uptake from the centre-right. I'm not sure on numbers but I'd hazard a guess at that actually being the largest demographic in this country.

They stand a good chance.

You're probably right. Just matter of Labour being appealing enough to those voters. Which in my eyes means being bland, safe, no-real-difference, not rocking the boat, slightly less crap etc.

I can only speak for myself but if they have decent policies then I'll consider them. I don't care much if they're bland and safe, I want policies that work.

Have you ever taken one of those blind policy quizzes?

Which parties policies came out on top for you?"

I have never done one of those but I'd imagine a if come back as being a mixture.

Tell you what, ill go find one now and let you know

"Labour should have been all over the Torys this past year.

Don't you think the debate has become ever more and unhealthily polarised though.? At the end of the day most people and most politicians want "us" to be safe warm healthy happy etc... There is much common ground and yet even in these pages people are quick to throw insults... Tory cunts is often thrown out and Labours lazy fuckers... There's more that unites us than divides us and whoever is voted into power we are stronger together.

I personally can't see any niche or fringe party doing anything so the battle for power is always going to be in the centre ground. Blair got that bit right. Did he not commit to continue with the tory budget and policies too? So the message was.. "we'll do their stuff... But we will do it better.. Because we can't possibly do it any worse". (memory of D Ream). It worked. For a while anyway.

"I've said it before, trouble with Keir is being a lawyer he is constantly terrified of saying anything significant or interesting.

He thinks he can bring the whole country together in some weird coalescing miasma.

Labour need a rabble rouser. A shouter. A moaner. An attack dog. "

I have never agreed with anything that you have said... until now.

Historically Labour were the ordinary persons Party whose role was to vociferously campaign for working class values and in that way they were heavily supported by another working mans support system - the Trade Unions.

The collapse of Trade Unionism brought about the collapse of the Labour Party as we knew it and Tony Blair’s election success was all about his personality and the idea of things being far better with an inspired PM than the stale and stagnation of the then hapless Conservative Party.

The “fight” that ordinary people need in their politics has become Nationalism and as long as ordinary people continue to identify with Nationalist ideology, Labour will struggle.

It is a shame the the U.K. electorate is so naive and so focused on identity. We might do a lot better as a country if we focused on competence, rather than identity. Like her, or loathe her - Merkel has been a great Chancellor for Germany and she wasn’t voted in because of her personality or because of three word slogans.

Which parties policies came out on top for you?

They did one of them under corbyn.

His policies came out on top and when informed they were labour policies, most of the respondents replied they would never vote for corbyn.

Obviously

All very funny but it's not as simple as that

I've frequently done that sort of test, and yes many Labour and green policies come out favourite.

But then intelligent voters like me look at the small number of daft policies and people (eg McDonnell unable to articulate a credible economic policy) and find they can't vote for the party.

Why do you feel the need to keep telling people your ‘intelligent’ ? "

Because you have a theory some voters are thick

"Labour should have been all over the Torys this past year.

Ha. Yeah, fair points all round.

I'm not that bothered about charisma. If they really do move centre-right then they have a whole load of votes they could pick up.

But, they need seem really decent policies. Sitting on the fence isn't gonna work.

That's my point from earlier ^^^ I bet that if you actually read the green manifesto (last one I saw was was very short, saves paper) I guarantee you will find two or three policies or aspirations that sound absolutely mad and mean you can't in good consciounce vote for them.

I'm surprised that I came out so closely aligned to any party. They all have policies I don't like, or agree with.

And I'm puzzled what made up the 38% of agreement with the Tories. It was higher than I imagined it would be.

But, they need seem really decent policies. Sitting on the fence isn't gonna work.

Which parties policies came out on top for you?

I have never done one of those but I'd imagine a if come back as being a mixture.

Tell you what, ill go find one now and let you know

So... I used uk.isidewith.com

My results are -

Labour 75%

Conservative 74%

LD 74%

Green 50%

Green 94%

Labour 91%

Lib Dems 89%

Tory 38%

Every part of that surprised me.

What surprises you about it?

I'm not surprised at all by my results

I'm surprised that I came out so closely aligned to any party. They all have policies I don't like, or agree with.

And I'm puzzled what made up the 38% of agreement with the Tories. It was higher than I imagined it would be.

I would imagine most if not all voters have policies that they don't like, even within the party they vote for.

Maybe you don't actually hate the tories as much as you think?"

Ha maybe! And I don't dislike Labour, Green or Lib Dems as much as I thought either.

"Labour should have been all over the Torys this past year.

I believe that a Mr Tony Blair(labour)spent 1,000,000 on the flat and used tax payers money typical labour"

Pathetic nonsense you say?

So why have the Electoral Commission just announced that there are reasonable grounds to suspect that an offence has been committed?

Seems like Starmer knows his onions.

There was a test I found a few years ago with the actual excerpt from each parties policy on each topic. But it took longer to get though as there was a lot more reading. Plus you could pretty easily guess some of the parties, especially in the environment and immigration sections.

Bridgend

it will be interesting to see results of elections in May. The polls have not been good for labour Starmer has failed to inspire anyone & has spent too much time fighting his own party & has not held the Conservatives' to account or come up with anything real in the way of policies.

"it will be interesting to see results of elections in May. The polls have not been good for labour Starmer has failed to inspire anyone & has spent too much time fighting his own party & has not held the Conservatives' to account or come up with anything real in the way of policies. "

I fear it will be a bad night for labour, all these sleaze allegations have come to late although it depends on what Cummings says next

People may agree with labour policies the issue isnt the policy it's the cost of that policy and who has to pay.

Every country needs a strong opposition that offers realistic alternatives, we dont have that in the UK. Too much policy is pandering to minor opinionated groups, that are blinded to the reality and consequences of their ideas, we then have the politicians themselves, far too few have any experience outside of politics, far too many come via oxbridge, it's a bloody mess, I have said it before the media have to take responsibility for a lot of it, 24 hr news creation not reporting

People buy the Murdoch press and believe its demonisation of Labour and trades unions etc.....All targets of the arse that is Rupert Murdoch a man who will not be missed when his time comes.

As our quality of life spirals , foodbanks, beggers, zero hour contracts directors pay being boosted by bonuses in the millions in some cases .All while subcontracting the cleaners and lower end jobs to the lowest bidder ensuring a further cut in take home pay for honest working people.

It is going the way of the basket case that is the USA and with it civil unrest is sure to follow.

I think it's very hard to sort the media shite stories that deserve to be ignored from the genuine media stories that merit the time of day. If "sleaze" is as endemic as some would suggest makes you wonder about the anti sleaze measures that were put in place post Neil Hamilton. If there is sleaze on the scale suggested, then there needs to be process changes quickly to prevent it happening again. With redress for prior acts.

The trouble is all politicians have been tarred with the same brush and we need a way to find the better ones from the rest. Todays shop window onto our politicians is not easy to distinguish.

If they truly are our representatives, taken from our people, doesn't say much for our values.

Agree with that. But what do you think is causing the spiral downwards and what can be done to arrest and then improve it? So we are better represented, by more capable and qualified representatives, elected through a fair and democratic process, for the betterment of our society.?

In 1945 a left wing gmnt built the welfare state and the nhs.

In 2021 calls for broadband to be in every household (hugely ironic considering the last 12 months)and partially renationalise certain industries are seen as stalinesque.

People in public office should adhere to rules no matter how small or relevant you gauge them to be because if we let them slip the smaller rules it only encourages a snowball effect for bigger transgressions.

Why don't you use the word "speculated" as the press reports you refer to all use?, they all say "speculated to be as much as 200k", that way its factual as can be and doesn't look like you are making figures up.

Most ‘normal ‘ people don’t spend nearly £200,000 to do up a flat, and then can’t remember where the money came from .

You're obsessed with this £200,000. You've already said once it was rounded up. But you've not said from what.

I have no idea, do you have a more accurate figure that I can use? I did say ‘nearly ‘ £200,000

I don't know. It doesn't interest me the way it seems to you.

'Nearly' could mean anything.

Ok, as you don’t know , I will continue using the figure quoted in several areas of the press, once you get the true figure I will use that, is that ok with you?

Why don't you use the word "speculated" as the press reports you refer to all use?, they all say "speculated to be as much as 200k", that way its factual as can be and doesn't look like you are making figures up."

Good idea, I will do that

I think this shows BJs attitude to money its ok for him to spend a phenomenal amount of money doing up a flat where he might have to move out in 5 years. money he does not appear to have, while cutting the wages of NHS workers, how bad was the flat to start with? did Teresa may trash the place before she moved out?

The difference is that the cost of the re decoration is totally immaterial and is not something that he personally can keep. Any senior executive should hav e their office decorated in a manner that makes them feel comfortable. We want to obtain maximum value from them. Few people are more important than a pm leading the county during a time of crisis.

The NHS payroll is already massive and any pay increase to NHS staff has to be funded by the taxpayer. Even small pay increases amount to massive sums of public money .

Is it only people in public office that "if we let them slip the smaller rules it only encourages a snowball effect for bigger transgressions."? Are they made of different genetic material to the rest of us..? Surely if you insist on that rule for those in public office then it should be applied to the general population too?

So if I have 6 kids I’d need to earn several £1000.00 per week to feed em

I don’t I earn enough to feed my 2 kids and my Mrs

But hey why not

Council house sky tv dog fags booze ect

Perhaps I’m doing something wrong?

Yup, what you're doing wrong is stereotyping and demonising poor people. Not just you, this attitude is fairly prevalent.

As I said "welcome to Tory Britain".

Tory Britain where the government pays you to stay at home because your jobs can’t continue due to virus

Where your given benifits (I thought a benifit was something you earned the benefit of being employed and working hard is the income you take home )

Apparently not a benefit is something you get for not working having kids you can’t afford ect

The truth hurts no one dare say it !

I am a tax payer, I am happy to pay to make sure children are feed, if you have a problem with the benefits system why don’t you write to your local MP, start a petition, start a protest, don’t just sit on your arse doing nothing . "

You see I don’t sit on my arse I employ 12 staff I pay them to work the amount of people who lady a week or less is crazy

“ ohh that’s hard work don’t want that “

I should be able to report them instead they go back to benefits !!!

"I think this shows BJs attitude to money its ok for him to spend a phenomenal amount of money doing up a flat where he might have to move out in 5 years. money he does not appear to have, while cutting the wages of NHS workers, how bad was the flat to start with? did Teresa may trash the place before she moved out?

milton keynes

I was hoping for more from starmer by now but maybe due to the world situation its not all his fault. I would like to hear more of what he stands for. However with the latest problems facing Boris the May elections should be good for Labour. Ironically its Cummings that's doing more damage to the government than Labour and suspect more to come.

I agree, I think the ‘sleaze’ stories have come a bit too late though and labour will be in for a tough night

Oh woooh is me no work 3 kids I have at weekends

Applied for jobs I had advertised

Ok says me start Monday

3 days work

Oh fuck that don’t turn up back on be benifits

That’s facts

Some might be sorry cases but to be honest there’s work for them that want it like I say people afraid to say it in this day n age "

So your answer to "why so much hate and confusion towards people less well off than you", is more hateful and confusing rhetoric.

No further questions.

P

I would have trashed it.

But yeah. You know the Tories. Starving kids? Nah, fuck 'em. Boris wants a swanky pad, oh yeah, we've got money here for that.

Starving kids with large dogs sky tv cigarettes n booze

Mmmm

Exactly. One of the starving kids might have a dog. Fuck 'em, let them starve. Much better to spend more cash on Boris's flat.

So if you can’t feed your kids don’t have a dog don’t smoke don’t drink

If you can’t feed em don’t breed em !!

Welcome to Tory Britain.

You see I don’t sit on my arse I employ 12 staff I pay them to work the amount of people who lady a week or less is crazy

“ ohh that’s hard work don’t want that “

I should be able to report them instead they go back to benefits !!!

Report them then, stop moaning about it, speak to Boris, I am happy to pay the tax,

You can’t report them

Believe me if I could I would

Good, I am glad you can’t, are you unhappy with your life?

I’m extremely happy I’m my own boss

Nice family friends

Own home dog

Don’t owe anyone anything

Couldn’t be better give 12 people a good living look after them like my own they look after me live s good !!

Then why so much hate and confusion about people less well off than yourself?

Not hate or confusion truth

Report them then, stop moaning about it, speak to Boris, I am happy to pay the tax,

You can’t report them

Believe me if I could I would

Good, I am glad you can’t, are you unhappy with your life?

I’m extremely happy I’m my own boss

Nice family friends

Own home dog

Don’t owe anyone anything

Couldn’t be better give 12 people a good living look after them like my own they look after me live s good !!

Then why so much hate and confusion about people less well off than yourself?

Not hate or confusion truth

I’ve had them on my door step this past three weeks

Oh woooh is me no work 3 kids I have at weekends

Applied for jobs I had advertised

Ok says me start Monday

3 days work

Oh fuck that don’t turn up back on be benifits

That’s facts

Some might be sorry cases but to be honest there’s work for them that want it like I say people afraid to say it in this day n age

Afraid to say what? Maybe the jobs you are offering are crap and poorly paid ? How many people have done this ?

I’ve had 2 in last 3 weeks

So poorly paid ???

Stop “benefits “ see how poorly paid they are then

But your happy to pay Fred to stay at home so probably won’t win this one

Ps

25,000 to 30,000 per year depending on what hrs you do

There again that’s not 50,000 equal to what you need to earn to come off benefits

You don’t believe what ?

If you’ve followed the thread Fred is the person unknown claiming benefits ect

Read back through

I left home at 16 and have worked ever since no one given me anything

I had problems with drugs when younger

I bought 60 fags a day smoked probably 20 as worked with 5 lads who all smoked d*unk to much

Even small pay increases amount to massive sums of public money ."

The only difference is 60+ million people are dependent on the NHS; only 3 of those people are dependent on Boris’s flat! (Boris, Carrie Antoinette, Wilfie, plus the dog)!!!

"The peeps have spoken Labour are done "

I hope not... A two party system is bad enough.... A one party system is just not going to work.... People have to be engaged and care about the political process for it to work effectively...
