World Pandemic and blaming Brexit for everything . . .
Jump to: Newest in thread
The tactic seems to be to handle the pandemic so badly that the impact of Brexit pales into insignificance.
Last I heard they still hadn't quite got there - OBR were saying that long term impact of COVID would be 3% of GDP, and Brexit 4%. So it's all to play for. And the stakes they are playing with? Our children's and grandchildren's (and probably a few more generations) futures.
Response - to save the whataboutists the keystrokes - "Still at least they are doing better than Corbyn would have done" |

In fairness, the pandemic came along at the perfect time for the Tories. It's beyond any distraction they could come up with.
Back in Jan/Feb last year they were just ramping up the anti immigrant rhetoric to shift people's attention away from Brexit. They've barely had to bother with that since then. |

Amazing that a nano wide virus is found to be working for the tory cause? Who knew?

Not saying that! Ha.
But yeah the Tories certainly made the most of it. |

Or maybe the 'true'ality' is that the Pandemic was working against the Labour Party. Imagine that. A card carrying nano sized virus with designs on ruination of the British populace. "Today Great Britain. Tomorrow the World. Oh! Wait a second . . . !!!"

"All written into the URL itself.
If it was a BBC link I would have added a Synopsis as they just number/alpha their links.
Sky always write it in plain text into the URL.
"
The plain text says absolutely nothing just maybe this maybe that if Fanny was my Aunt
Therefore regretfully I'm out |

I saw a similar and very misleading story on a news portal that was claiming that even though exports dropped by nearly 50% in January, they “recovered” by nearly 45% in Feb and implying that because of this there was basically no story. Obviously not mathematically competent - no surprise lol. |

With the FTSE 250 at an all time high ( and the FTSE100 crossing the 7000 barrier) I think we can assign the predictions of the merchants of doom and gloom to the dustbin.
Investor confidence in the prospects for the UK remains high. Brexit on a simplistic basis was simply a change in how we conduct business with the EU. They were always going to continue buying goods from us and vice versa . In some regards , it was similar to a company reviewing a supplier agreement and asking a current supplier to re tender .
Companies are working hard to overcome any teething problems that still exist. Hauliers are clearing customs without any real problems.
Predictions of planes not flying or 20 mile queues of lorries on the M20 now look laughable |

As was the point of the article above - World Pandemic and coinciding Brexit - by remainers it was going to be Brexit that was blamed and World Pandemic and stockpiling ignored.
Of course time will tell, but time so far is telling . . .

Indeed. In a number of cases companies have chosen (following UK govt advice) to conduct their business (and presumably pay at least some of their taxes) from new EU premises. Result! |

How much more expensive are your clothes? Do you only buy clothes manufactured in the EU or are there other reasons for the increased costs. As clothing retailers work on a very high mark up , I would have thought that any increase in the base cost would be minimal . |

I don’t care, I am only interested in how it affects me, I admire your honesty which is a great attribute . However we have to make decisions based on the impact on the entire population , not one individual.
I don’t care how it affects other people, I am only interested in myself, my holiday money is worth less, my clothes are more expensive , Brexit has been bad for me . How much more expensive are your clothes? Do you only buy clothes manufactured in the EU or are there other reasons for the increased costs. As clothing retailers work on a very high mark up , I would have thought that any increase in the base cost would be minimal .
They are more expensive, yes I only buy from the EU, Brexit has been a disaster for me
Hello . The RPI tends to indicate that clothing costs actually fell in January . Maybe consider buying your clothes from a different source or supplier

Apologies. I should have mentioned that these indices specifically related to clothing costs and are down loaded from the ONS website. January may be a bit lower due to sales as Jan 20 was also lower. "

And get more for their .16+ against the Euro.

"In fairness, the pandemic came along at the perfect time for the Tories.
Who knew?
"
Exactly. It must have been planned! These Tories will stop at nothing, you know! |

I just did a Moncler search for both the UK online shop and the French online shop.
I can get BOTH jackets at exactly the same price and tax and delivery included.
This is the same for many EU outlets (I pointed this out a few weeks ago) Rather than lose sales to a very large UK market, manufacturers are more often than not soaking up Tax and Duties.
I am getting that result all the time for consumables and parts. |

Yet still .16 more than the Euro. Imagine that after all that's happened. Brexit. Pandemic. The Export War going on between China and the Rest of the World and still .16 more than the Euro.

"Brexit on a simplistic basis was simply a change in how we conduct business with the EU
Indeed. In a number of cases companies have chosen (following UK govt advice) to conduct their business (and presumably pay at least some of their taxes) from new EU premises. Result!
Perhaps then you missed my post about the 1400 EU companies setting up new offices in the UK. Result!

Although what you’re claiming clearly isn’t true, if we play along the you don’t think the yo-yo currencies of those Eastern European states have more effect?

"I just did a Moncler search for both the UK online shop and the French online shop.
Thanks for taking time to do that research, I buy my clothes from flannels, the price has increased, sad times
Internet Tip. Don't go to websites that are more expensive and then complain that it is more expensive. Go instead to the Moncler Website and them at the same price as the EU prices.
Flannels is cheaper , but thanks for taking the time to look You should really check before you start with the old flannel ive checked the prices too seems your concern is misplaced, as for your holiday abroad i wouldn't hold your breath the way cases are rising in Europe at the mo.
Wrong, but thanks for trying. I will be spending a month in Italy this summer, the fact that my pound has been savagely devalued by Brexit is sad , but i don’t expect sympathy "
As you’ve been warned, they’re not doing well with the jabs in Italy, be careful, Romania needs customers like you |

Then spend your money while you are away. Isn't that what holiday money is for? To get more with the .16+ on the euro.

Here is more irrelevance for you:
"After a 42% plunge in January in sales to the EU, February's bounce back of 46.6% is more the kind of figure the government would like associated with Global Britain's new trading era. "

So. To summarise:
World Pandemic and blaming Brexit for everything . . . didn't happen that way.
Mostly prices across markets have risen in line with each other.
You can buy most goods from the EU fro the same price as you can in the UK. (oddly however they are dearer to buy in France co's they add the tax after the cart is filled). I will get my family on this one and inform you later about why it is dearer to live in France after Brexit and a World Pandemic.
The Markets are higher in UK to EU exports than they are from EU to UK exports.
It is now Vin'oclock. Cheers. ChinChin.

Bit odd that French prices have gone up where as others remained the same. My own experience of just shopping here in the UK is prices seem stable, in fact if anything a bit cheaper than last year.

There seems to be about a 7% rise overall in France. But then markets in any country can fluctuate on a whim. Sometimes speculative and others real-time costs being passed on to the consumer. Another thought is that price rises are being driven by a very low feeling that tourism will seriously suffer because of the massive rise in covid infections right now in France and that they need to push for higher prices in other areas to compensate for the loss. It would be a second year decimation of the tourist industry for them.
I'm sure other EU countries - possibly not Spain - will go roughly the same way.
