60% cuts in aid to the likes of Yemen, Syria, Lebanon .

Is this right for a globally ambitious country?

I agree with cuts to India given their space programme but countries who genuinely have fuck all seems to be a backward step. It will also leave the door open for China’s soft power grab.

Particularly bad since British weapons and training contributes to the carnage.

The Foreign Aid Budget never needed to be cut, just targeted better. But hey, when the mob clamoured for the "charity begins at home" mantra, populist gvmt soon gave way. How long before another Band Aid style response is needed?

Yes I agree it should be scrutinised like the Indian grants . Some I believe were targeted towards women’s rights in India so were definitely needed but the headlines ignore this. We are mostly ignorant of the grants so opinionated papers tell us their view.

A Tory MP on the bbc said tonight we’re giving vaccines so that’s enough. Also everyone else didn’t give like us so it’s not fair. Tell that to the starving kids in Yemen I’m sure they’ll understand.

We are a generous nation and should be ashamed of this.

It’s being cut by more than half

Why don’t we tax the non domiciles and rich elite to make up the gap. That would cover the nurses too!!

As a percentage of GNI the uk contribution very much exceeds other countries - even after the adjustment from 0.7 to 0.5

Is the us$ amount less now? Yes

Fair to say the GNI and current economic outlook is very much lower than expected and consequently the Us$ amount is less.

Perhaps other countries could add even a half or full point to their current contribution - this would greatly help I'm sure .

Levelling up?

As I understand it the figure is a percentage so given the current situation with a year of covid hitting the economy it would go down. The money given needs to get to those that need the help and if it does not then it's only helping those that oppress them

So we’re blaming other countries ?

The grant is a percentage so reduces as our economy reduces so why make cuts.

Cameron introduced this and it’s a good thing.

As a nation we give generously because we chose to and we can afford it.

Levelling up would be to have a fair tax regime. Why is that never mentioned as an option?

Levelling up would be looking to other countries who set much lower percentage of GNI contributions.

US - 0.16% / UK - 0.5%

What do you think 0.1% extra from US would do to increase the amount in the pot?

There's at least another 6 or 7 countries who could do similar - and still be contributing less per GNI than the uk

You are looking in the wrong place .

I suppose if the arms sales add to the national income and the aid is a percentage of the national income then yes it helps. I'm not advocating that by the way

The agreed 0.7% looks to be good to me as it was passed. It goes up and down with our wealth or lack of.

Personally I’d take it off the tax avoiding twats in the U.K. but that’s another discussion.

No it's not a dick size comp - if it was uk would be up near the top. This isn't just about uk - it's global !

What's your real beef here - the uk contributions or the perception that the uk is the only country that has companies and/or individuals who ‘Hide’ money that they should be paying to the treasury who can then contribute more to the OAD global pot.

UK contribution is more than acceptable and we should not feel ashamed we pay a higher percentage than many other global countries.

I’m proud we paid the 0.7% so not sure who is ashamed?

The point on tax is the U.K. processes 60% of known tax avoidance through its territories. £465B according to the world bank.

Don’t confuse my intentions. I don’t want the rich to pay more. I want them to pay the same as the top PAYE in the U.K. 45% . Is that a bad thing that we all pay the rate?

If they did we wouldn’t have a deficit and would be able to afford more aid along with more investment in developing countries.

It’s a percentage so it’s already gone down.

Our GDP has plummeted so in relation gas the aid bill.

Cutting the aid bill won’t turn around our economy.

Do you think non tax payers should pay tax?

If the tax was paid around 10% of our debt would be written off every year.

So in 10 years we would have a £200B positive balance of payments .

Managing it better mean closer supervision on the ground which is what regimes in the Yemen and elsewhere don’t want.

So no, I wouldn’t persevere with it, Western involvement almost always solves nothing and if anything emboldens tyrants.

It would be more constructive stopping Brussels fishing boats in the area from stealing their fish.

So when you find a CHALLENGE to much you just let it quietly fade away? So if child poverty becomes to much of a CHALLENGE, you will let kids starve? If homelessness becomes to much of of a CHALLENGE, you will let people on the streets die of hypothermia?

No you wouldn't, and no one with one ounce (25 grams) of integrity and compassion would either.

The moment we stop trying and just accept that it's just how life is, is the moment a little bit more of our humanity dies.....and all to often it is becoming more and more prevalent.

Now, some people would be quite happy to allow this, but I dont think you are one of them....are you?

The moment we stop trying and just accept that it's just how life is, is the moment a little bit more of our humanity dies.....and all to often it is becoming more and more prevalent.

Now, some people would be quite happy to allow this, but I dont think you are one of them....are you?

Try reading my reasons above rather than questioning my impeccable morality"

Your reasons? You said....and I quote...."Wisdom is knowing that there are some problems in the world that we can’t do anything about". Your reply to my statement was.....and i once again quote...."No, think you’ll find I’m right". The first is a quote, the second a reply, so no reason or reasons given.

I never questioned your morals, indeed I said I didn't think you were a person who would allow this, then gave you the opportunity to confirm or deny? You did neither. So I will leave it at that, and will no longer comment on this thread.

"60% cuts in aid to the likes of Yemen, Syria, Lebanon .

Is this right for a globally ambitious country?

I agree with cuts to India given their space programme but countries who genuinely have fuck all seems to be a backward step. It will also leave the door open for China’s soft power grab. 14.6 billion isn’t that enough ? How much should we give 20/30:40 billion jackal ???

It’s being cut by more than half

Why don’t we tax the non domiciles and rich elite to make up the gap. That would cover the nurses too!! but how much should we give them everyone has an opinion but no one will give a number 20/30/40/50 100billion it’s not like the U.K. public don’t give out there own pockets in the form of charity’s aswell as overseas aid anyone got a number ?

The law was passed at 0.7%. This government are ignoring that . What a surprise . We are paying less due to Brexit and Covid so no need for cuts . sooooo how much do you think we should give then lol

The agreed 0.7% looks to be good to me as it was passed. It goes up and down with our wealth or lack of.

Personally I’d take it off the tax avoiding twats in the U.K. but that’s another discussion. should t it go up and down then woth say a pandemic like we’ve not seen before maybe in times like this we could pump a bit more into the U.K. or is that not acceptable do we need to be ashamed I wonder if any other countries are doing the same or is outrage only for the U.K. ?

It’s a percentage so it’s already gone down.

Our GDP has plummeted so in relation gas the aid bill.

Cutting the aid bill won’t turn around our economy.

Do you think non tax payers should pay tax?

If the tax was paid around 10% of our debt would be written off every year.

So in 10 years we would have a £200B positive balance of payments .

sorry I thought this thread was about aid not tax avoidance? Like another poster says the more we give the more is stole so arnt we just giving to criminals should we cut middle man out and pay the criminals direct ? Love to be outraged makes us feel great about ourselves lol"

The tax reference was in answer to an earlier poster. And as it’s taxpayers money it’s very relevant.

So all our aid is stolen is that what your saying? Again like the PPE we know but do nothing. That’s bad government process not the poor bastards on the grounds fault.

It's got better for sure but still to much goes to the wrong people. Even giving it to charities is not full proof. A few years back an American politician during Obama's time I think said the majority of aid goes to corruption and funding arms sales to further oppress those we seek to help

Love to be outraged makes us feel great about ourselves lol

The tax reference was in answer to an earlier poster. And as it’s taxpayers money it’s very relevant.

So all our aid is stolen is that what your saying? Again like the PPE we know but do nothing. That’s bad government process not the poor bastards on the grounds fault. where did I say all our aid ? And again how much should we give then it’s not that hard a question

The 0.7 % that was promised and do you feel that’s enough or would you prefer we give more ? Arnt we just funding corrupt politicians and criminals

0.7% is fine, it was what was promised you keep saying mate but I was wondering what you wanted not the government figures

For now , I want us to pay 0.7 % . just as I thought "

How much do you think we should pay?

Our entire foreign aid bill goes to Stuttgart?"

Maybe an attempt to say that foreign aid buys Mercedes and Porches.

I wouldn't. It would be a short term fix. High level tax payers just move to a more favourable country. We might be better to attract more with better tax terms. City of London is a very interesting organisation, worth taking a look at. They are the only organisation allowed into the House of Commons every day, to view and oversea.

These are not high level tax payers. They are non tax paying residents using British banks to avoid tax globally.

As they don’t actually pay any tax to the U.K. then in reality we have nothing to lose by taxing their offshore accounts at even just 20% . We control the tax havens so easy to impose.

They are unlikely to leave. The reason rich tax avoiders don’t have their money in the likes of Dubai (which is tax free) is stability. The last thing you want is some tin pot dictator of crown Prince deciding he’s changing the law and your money is now his.

The extremely wealthy need a stable western country so that limits the choices. We just make it easy for them.. As long as the rate isn’t higher than any stable democracy’s rate they won’t leave.

Here’s a link to show why this isn’t a joke and we should not allow the donation rate to drop. We are one of the biggest donators to Syria’s refugees.
