EU blocks export of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses to Australia
The European Commission has blocked the export of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses produced in Italy and destined for Australia.
Two sources told Reuters about the move, which comes after the drug manufacturer failed to meet its EU contract commitments.

"Breaking other peoples deals to ensure that it's own is done first.
So out of character.
Is that not against international law?"
There is going to be some sort of Legal Response I would guess. |

Thousands of Aussies in CWGC plots across Europe ... and a country that took in over 600,000 refugees and displaced persons when few wanted them between 1945-1952; equivalent to 3 million today. Not right by any measure. |

The eu have made numerous mistakes regarding the rollout.

I am sorry for your loss but we have all known people who have died.
Are you forgetting that we used to compare our figures on a daily basis?
This used to happen..that is a fact.
Its also a fact that the ultimate test..of how a country has handled the pandemic will be,sadly, the numbers who have lost their lives.

Do you think the Australian government will view this action favourably? do you think it could have an effect on Australian companies thinking twice about setting up in EU.
Do you think this type of action by the EU is seen favourably by any other countries who have ordered vaccine from AZ, are they perhaps now a little concerned if their shipment might be blocked?
How do you think the conversation will go between AZ and the Australian government and/or between AZ and the EU/Italy?
These seem like much more productive questions/points of discussion?

It's all very puzzling considering the fact that due to Macron and Merkel nobody in the EU wants the AZ vaccine!
What are they planning on doing with it all?
Store it in a basement with all the other AZ vaccine they will not use? |

Too many times already we have seen the EU acting in very self-interested ways. We approved the 'equivalence deal' very early on, and they are yet to even discuss their end of the deal seriously never mind approve it.
The EU were the first to break the Irish Deal.
They threatened to stop Legal Contracts of the vaccine to the UK from Belgium. Until of course they realised that we would just make it all in the UK and then probably stop exporting it to the EU. Australia don't have that ability (yet) maybe they will seek exports directly from the UK or manufacture under licence from AZ or another vaccine manufacturer.
Members of the EU tried to make separate deals outside of the agreed EU terms.
'Where it suits' - is not a proper, and will prove even a Legal, way of doing business.
All this is not what the rest of the World would consider as good business practice and would, in my opinion, have others act very warily of dealing with them now and in the future.

The EU made a law in January to stop the export of vaccine made in the EU to any country outside of the EU.
Even if it was ordered, bought and paid for before the law was made up.
Italy recently asked the EU to use this new law to stop the export of vaccine to Australia. |

I love being part of EU. And this is prime example why. All the small countries could not fight back against big pharma, but EU can. Try to mess with EU and you will get fucked. That's why Brexiteers here are constantly whinging about EU. They want EU split, because UK against small EU countries - easy. UK against EU bloc - UK gets fucked. Simple as that.
AZ signed the contract with EU, then got higher paying contracts with other countries without calculating their production numbers. Tried to cut off EU vaccines for higher profit while breaching the contract. However they didint calculate that they will get fucked by EU.
Brexiteers can try circle jerking all day they want, but EU is not splitting up any time soon. And this is prime example why. Stronger together |

Not a great story in Australia.
They already have 300000 AZ doses, and will start domestic production this month.
They have asked the EU to review the decision.
Also helps that they aren't rife with infections down there. |

Without guessing or making things up (take note Lionel), does anyone actually know when Australia signed up to have the AZ vaccine?
We know the EU was a good three months behind the UK so did Australia order before the EU?
Also we know the EU have already said they don't believe in queues or the first come first served situation. |

OZ signed 11 days before EU.
I think the Australians are not that bothered to be honest. I think the optics are far worse for the EU than the actual outcome. |

Very likely though not totally sure. I have heard AZ is much cheaper than Pfizer though. Seems an odd situation in that EU countries were talking down AZ to the point that their population not being keen to have it. Now they stop shipments to Oz. Bit of we don't want it but not going to let you have it going on. I can see long term implications in that for future vaccines, countries outside the EU will not be placing orders with EU companies for fear of a similar situation |

AZ is a fifth of the cost of Pfizer.
Maybe France and Germany were rather hoping that their own vaccines would arrive before AZ became the game changer |

Seems an odd situation in that EU countries were talking down AZ to the point that their population not being keen to have it. Now they stop shipments to Oz. Bit of we don't want it but not going to let you have it going on. I can see long term implications in that for future vaccines, countries outside the EU will not be placing orders with EU companies for fear of a similar situation
AZ is a fifth of the cost of Pfizer.
Maybe France and Germany were rather hoping that their own vaccines would arrive before AZ became the game changer "
Oh wow, I thought I heard it was cheaper but that's a very big difference indeed. Shame the EU are stopping others getting it but I fear such actions will not be forgotten quickly |

"EU blocks export of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses to Australia
The European Commission has blocked the export of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine doses produced in Italy and destined for Australia.
Two sources told Reuters about the move, which comes after the drug manufacturer failed to meet its EU contract commitments.
"
Well this would be the perfect opportunity for the UK to step up and deliver to our Australian allies? Don’t you think?
I swear Brexiteers are more about complaining about the EU even though we have left. They had the power to leave, ain’t got the power to tell those who wanted to leave to do the right thing.
Useless... |

Which would basically mean the EU taking vaccine from the UK if we have to send our own supplies. This is the EU actions causing the problems not the UK. |

Not verified yet, but there is reporting on skynews.au that the Australian national vaccine rollout can continue as "British authorities helped the nation resource coronavirus vaccines following Italy's ban of AstraZeneca exports to Australia"

"How is our death rate comparing with our European friends,?
Much better than Belgium.
Oh! And on latest 7 day average numbers better than Germany and France.
So only the last 7 days matter?"
Oh sorry if that inconvenient fact doesn't quite suit your agenda.
What it does show is what the British governments action is achieving today compared to the others. Rather than in the distant past when pretty much everybody got it wrong.
Currently Britain is doing better on infection and death rates than a ruck of EU countries.
Yes including Germany, France, and Italy.
Sorry mate but it looks like the Tories are actually doing a decent job

No I think you are spot on.
We will just ignore the last year(the distant pass) and just focus on the last week
Do you think we could just get the last 12 months figures deleted completely?
Phew
Well done boris

Just because you are trailing at half time doesn't mean you will lose the match.
Being from Liverpool should know that better than anyone. |

seems the eu may have shot themselves in the foot yet again, AZ has cut its forecast for vaccine deliveries to the eu stating global supply chains as the problem.I guess they never thought that others might follow their lead and hold back supplies. |

"Biden’s administration is holding on to its stockpile of AstraZeneca PLC vaccines, even though the shot isn’t authorized for U.S. use, top aides said Friday -- rebuffing pressure from Europe and the company to consider sharing doses of the shot.
“We have a small inventory of AstraZeneca so that, if approved, we can get that inventory out to the American people as quickly as possible,” Jeff Zients, Biden’s Covid-19 response coordinator, said at a press briefing Friday. “We’re rightly focused on getting Americans vaccinated as soon as possible.”
Even though it has yet to seek U.S. regulatory approval, the U.K.-based company has begun manufacturing doses in the U.S. to fill an order for 300 million shots the American government placed last year.
AstraZeneca has encouraged Biden to consider sharing those U.S.-owned doses of its vaccine with the European Union, where countries face shortages and the drug is authorized for use. But Biden and his administration have made clear their priority is to inoculate the U.S. population first." / Bloomberg

America first - sounds familiar. Can't blame them as the EU have shown they are not going to export vaccines why should America |
