Morrisons fishing boat

Morrisons becomes the first supermarket to buy it’s own fishing boat.
Cornish seafood wholesaler and it’s 30ft trawler has been bought by the supermarket ....
Sounds a great initiative by this supermarket, who already has a very good reputation for its fresh fish offering .

"Should be the start of a revival in British fishing after the fleet size was halved during our membership of the EU.
yes, thats when they sold their licences to cash in" Yes thats because their quotas were so small, the eu offered them money to burn their boats and sell their licensees to bigger companies it was their only choice to survive. So much for the eu looking after all its citizens it was a stich up from the start. |

Can you advise who was on the fisheries committee and what they did to fight for the fishermen? |

The fishing industry in this country was sold down the river when we first signed up to the EEC right in the very beginning, it was the bargaining chip that was used so that the French would agree to let us join at the time. You can blame Farage and anybody else you like but they didn't start the demise of our fishing industry in this country, it happened way before then. |

Sounds a good idea and like others say other supermarkets may follow. Businesses adapting to the situation and seeing the new opportunities |

Looks like a supermarket taking over a £40m a year supplier who also own a very small boat. (30ft)
Good marketing I’m sure but the other 70 boats supplying Falfish might not be so happy when Morrison’s decide they want a price drop. But surely our supermarkets don’t squeeze suppliers?
All I can see is less money for the fisherman and some nice margin for Morrison share holders.
Hardly the fisherman’s ideal future. But they will hopefully make a living now Europe is closed to the m. |

Morrison’s already have there own slaughter house & meat packaging plant, & have done for at least 7 years if not more. This hasn’t put other meat processing plants & abattoirs out of business, & the farmers sell their animals through auction. I couldn’t tell you if any of the others supermarkets do but as far as I’m aware they don’t have such facilities. I don’t think them buying one boat & a fish auction will affect the fishermen to much, maybe investment & jobs for some, they would need to replicate this in other fishing towns though because as far as I’m aware you don’t catch cod off the Cornish coast x |

"I believe some UK fisherman set up 'ebay' for fish. The restaurants can order direct with the captain. It enables catch to be sold before it is even caught. "
I think the Scarborough lobster firm that was in the news recently, is involved in this type of operation |

This seems to be a reasonable answer to the question, "What can possibly go wrong?" |
