A tunnel to northern Ireland

In a desperate bid to divert attention from covid, brexit chaos and cladding scandal, the government is floating (sinking?) the idea of a tunnel to northern Ireland.
All a bit Garden Bridge and Boris island. |

johnson and his never ending lust for vanity projects. the same thing will happen as all his other vanity projects. hundreds of millions paid to his chums in consultancy and design fees then someone far more realistic will replace him and scrap the project before turf is cut. conservatism, always running out of other peoples money. |

Pretty much just a cynical attempt to distract from the NI protocol and to get the DUP to stop the dogwhistle threats.
However this being Boris, they won't pass the opportunity to commission a feasibility study funneling a few million to their supporters. |

This government is in an epic mess largely of it's own making.
We can expect more and more diversions to be thrown in. Anything to prevent you seeing the mess |

A cost of up to £40 billion for tunnelling depending on where they built it from & to, I’m basing my estimate on Heysham (Lancashire) to Dundalk, also the construction methods will depend on costs, traditional tunnelling or pre constructed sections sunk & joined, but the SNP the EU & the Irish government wouldn’t like this idea. For lowest cost certainly a bridge would be possible from Scotland to the North of Ireland, but would you risk using it? Tunnelling between Scotland & N Ireland would have problems as someone else mentioned. But would there be a will for a bridge paid for by the UK tax payer to link two countries who seem to want to leave the union? to join the EU I doubt it. x Happy Valentines everybody x |

The tunnel idea was first mentioned before the current Covid crisis so that throws out the deflection suggestion.
I seem to remember the biggest problem was all the unused WW2 munitions that were dumped in the sea.
Anyway I guess all the doom and gloom people on here have either never used or never heard of the Euro tunnel.! |

"How do you come to the conclusion that this is a desperate bid to detract from covid etc?
Well first why don't you tell me why you think this a serious proposal." Well if i wanted to spin it in the governments favour i would say the infrastructure would bring long term jobs and apprenticeships to the north as promised in the levelling up of the country but hey ho thats just me being positive. |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proposed_British_Isles_fixed_sea_link_connections" Intresting but i cant see on that link where not many engineers think its a great idea.
I did see that boris proposed a bridge way back when he was foreign secretary though so i guess that debunks the idea that its a diversion from covid and brexit. |

Well I prefer being realistic, as pointed out above, feasibility studies haven't been encouraging. 3 months ago it was a bridge that was sugggested but that didn't get off the ground. The estimated cost of 20 billion isn't realistic. If you knew anything of the politics of NI and Scotland you would see this for the dead cat it is.
NI has massive infrastructure issues and big holes in education provision, but that doesn't make the DUP happy so instead we have this ludicrous idea that will fall off the headlines in a few days. If it means you don't have to think about starving children, well carry on I suppose. |
