Been a bit of a storm about him.

He was invited to speak at oxford before certain groups intervened pointing out he Is on fact a massive racist and his application has been withdrawn.

Whilst I have seen a few of his films I dont know his full history so in mot really sure what he has done.

Someone on Twitter has also called for him to be investigated for child abuse as a boy was caned in his film kes.

Strange days.

He said antisemitism was an understandable reaction to Israel's actions.

Labour dropped him for antisemitism quotes.

According to Oxford media, the event (virtual) went ahead.

The Jewish Students Society objected to it, due to his previous thoughts on Israel and Palestine.

Ask anyone who has been a victim of racism. Someone doesn't actually have to say an exact quote to show their intention.

The guy thinks the holocaust is open for discussion and denies there's racism within the labour party.

Even if he hasn't actually said an exact quote himself, he clearly supports it. That makes him racist at worst, and just as bad at least.

I don’t really understand this claim of anti-semitism . As far as I can understand, saying you don’t support Israel because of its treatment of Palestine is a statement that brands you as being against a religion?

Sometimes it feels that people are called out wrongly for being anti-Semitic or racist but the stigma and backlash destroys their lives or at least changes them for the worse. And the groups howling for blood are too powerful for an individual to resist or fight.

Even if he hasn't actually said an exact quote himself, he clearly supports it. That makes him racist at worst, and just as bad at least.

He said the holocaust happened

Its there In black and white.

If he is a holocaust denier he isnt very consistent.

As I've stated he said that 'to clarify' after the backlash.

Come on Lionel, we know how you support Corbyn and anyone linked to him but even you can't deny this one

"Of anti-Semitic. Was that not why there was the issue with the Labour Party?"

The big issue was the defeniton of the word.

The irha wanted to label critiscm of israel as anti semitic.2 of the examples used mentioned isreal without referencing jewish people.

When labour challenged this, they were obviously labelled as massive racists.

Pavita Cooper

In 2013, Cooper made a donation of £3,500 to the Conservative party but on her appointment to the EHRC in 2018 she did not declare any political activity. She and her husband, Steve, held a fundraiser for the then Tory MP for Brentford and Isleworth, Mary Macleod, at which the special guest was George Osborne. Cooper told Newsweek that Macleod was a “close friend” and that she had never made any other donations nor been a member of a political party. She said she would update her EHRC declaration of interest.

I don't have any specific interest in internal labour party machinations, but I've said before the total failure of the leadership to deal with straightforward discrimination damaged their vote and hence damaged democracy.

David Goodhart

The appointment of Goodhart, one of four new commissioners announced earlier this month, was criticised by equality campaigners. The writer and journalist argued “hostile environment” measures should not be watered down in the wake of the Windrush scandal. He has also described complaints of systemic racism as “statistically naive” and argued that “white self-interest is not same thing as racism”.

Goodhart responded by saying he had always described the Windrush scandal as shameful, adding: “This was not the so-called ‘hostile environment’ working, it was an egregious error. The real question is how we make status-checking fair.”

Rlb lost her job because she stupidly forwarded a false claim about Israel teaching kneeling on neck tactics to American police. Lack of judgement to say the least. That was all after the report was published.

Again I've no interest in internal labour arguments but it's about having a credible disciplined opposition that doesn't come across as having obsessions with faraway countries that have little relevance to UK voters.

Sometimes it feels that people are called out wrongly for being anti-Semitic or racist but the stigma and backlash destroys their lives or at least changes them for the worse. And the groups howling for blood are too powerful for an individual to resist or fight.

That's all there is to say about it.

So long as you're left wing yep

It’s not about right and left for goodness sake. It’s about much more than that!

I was saying if you're left wing you've got a chance to apologise and come back. No chance if you're right wing.

I don't consider myself either left or right BTW.

Yep. Profit before people.

Siphoning public money into rich people's accounts. Normally they're more subtle about it. But the Tories know they can do what they want and people will keep voting them in regardless.

You could argue that those people are right wing.

Obviously there's more to it than that. But it's certainly the central tenant. All the other stuff, anti-immigration, anti-poor people etc are all tools of control, and although used primarily by the right wing, aren't inherently the point.

"Been a bit of a storm about him.

I thought the left didn't have people 'cancelled'?

Where's the line between not platforming racists and cancelling people?

Thanks. So you will admit that the left side also have a racism problem?

Being that he's a Corbyn supporter and all.

Huh? I'm not admitting anything. I'm interested in cancel culture and people who accuse others of cancel culture.

Also. I'm not "left". "

People read cancel culture and assume that someone has to be wiped from all existence for it to be the case. Have a look at what's happened to Gina carano. Better yet, have a look at the calls for Jk Rowling to lose her publishers and be pulled off twitter, the death threats etc. There is a culture coming from the left (has been there for years) ,that's been supported in social media traditional media and politics that enables this idea that if someone doesn't say what you want to hear or offends you or your group (identity politics), that you can put pressure on companies to drop them, whether that be social media, their job, their sponsors, agents etc. And everytime it happens the margin for tolerance gets smaller and smaller. I'm sure we have spoken about Jonathan pie calling this all out.

You really should read up about why people are upset with JK Rowling. As you keep using her.

The problem of cancel culture is minor compared to the problem of people spreading hate. Yet it's very easy for Piers Morgan, Donald Trump etc to call "cancel culture" every five minutes (when these two are actually masters at cancelling people).

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. But it's over egged.

Plus we all have the right to express our thoughts. Free speech isn't only for people who spout hate. It's for normal people too.

I will read about Gina Carano. As I don't know this case.

consumer pressure is a right wing capitalist construct. it's merely the lasse fair market responding to the consumer to protect it's profits, shares and dividends.

I disagree that it is minor, having the power to move the goalposts on what is offensive and not based on the ideals off the group you are part of and having companies desperately trying to follow suit to protect their public image directly impacts freedom of speech. And its a weapon that is wielded far too often. And yes, I completely agree with you on your last point, free speech is for everyone. But one side of the sphere labels anything they don't agree or that doesn't resonate with their group identity with personally as hate speech and lumps that in with genuine hate speech. Even genuine criticism or just simple queries, which is where genuine antisemitism, islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism etc get blurred into the same realm as simple criticism or debate....

Exactly

"Been a bit of a storm about him.

I mean, seems to be quite often that people are say horrifically transphobic things. Like JK Rowling, then when people call her out, everyone screams "cancel culture".

Personally I don't agree with anything beyond personal boycotting of her movies and what not, for people who choose to do that. And for it to be discussed openly.

I support her right to have and express her abhorrent opinions.

It's up to her publishers and the people she works with if they want to keep her on or not. Writing to them and telling them to drop her is rediculous. I don't know if anyone did, but as an example.

If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.

These comments? or the one about menstruation ?

I don't hate her, I'd question her truth, I never really thought boy girl I just thought beautiful person.. ugly person.... I don't mean looks. Think some of her thinking is dated.

But she is right not everyone can menstrate lol would I boycott her, I don't need to as I hate Harry Potter franchise! I think the majority ultimately decide how the world rolls.

"I find it strange how any critiscm of isreal now means you are an anti semite. "
exactly ..its called the holocaust industry . Isreal defects critism for its atrocities by mobilising sympathy for the past. Of course critics of isreal does not constitute anti semetism.

The anti Semitic problem Labour had under Corbyn, was partially down to their reluctance to accept the IHRA definition on anti Semitism, only accepting the full definition in 2018, whilst only a year later showing no such reluctance adopting a working definition of Islamophobia in 2019. I believe Sir Trevor Philips former chair of the EHRC (& the CRE before that) can confirm it is far easier to be kicked out of the Labour Party for what is classed as a islamiphobic remark than it is for an anti semitic remark x

Ken Loach left when blair was in charge, he came back when corbyn came in, its fitting that he is out because starmer is in.

It’s the 80’s again like when kinnock was in, he fought the militants and won.

Labour needs a good purge to get them back to power.

Agreed. They should purge away.

It's not anti-semitic to be critical of the obscene policies of racist state Israel - a state founded on the basis of terrorism, land theft and ethnic cleansing.

But anyone in the public view who expresses criticism of Israeli policy or who offers analysis, is inviting a massive, hostile reaction from the gutter press.
