I posted this on another thread but it's more relevant here.
I don't doubt hauliers are having a rough time of it. I'm certain it hasn't helped with France closing the borders too.
I'd just like to see long term figures before deciding whether export figures are down because of Brexit.
Who knows if and when it's all ironed out it may show that actually over the course of a couple of years that EU exports are down but others are up. Or maybe EU exports are not down at all.
These aren't questions that can be answered short term. We will only be able to see it over the course when figures are published. |

The article in the observer says that hauliers are going back empty.
Rather than take my word for it - best read the article. It is online.
France borders are shut but not to trade - sonthat makes no difference.
French bars and hotels are shut but supermarkets are open.
I enjoyed some nice prawns last night- from Norway.
Yes - agreed, long term is the measure however, lots of businesses are folding and jobs being lost.
A re-adjustment perhaps but tell that to those affected.
I am sure that on this forum plenty will tell me that I am incorrect and then article is wrong. Sunny uplands etc. and they are welcome to their beliefs.
I am more interested in fact and what is actually happening than fantasy and a need to justify a decision made on false promises.
The UK left the EU and many will not want to return plus, the EU would not welcome the UK back so that line is drawn whichever way you look at it.
The UK must make the best of where it is and denial is of no benefit to anyone.
The issues need to be accepted, acknowledged and a way to resolve these found.
The reader deals that Truss has signed are as a whole just roll overs with no additional benifits so stop fooling yourselves.
Work to make Britain as good as it can be rather than fantasizing over Farage. |

I have read the article.
French borders have been closed st times to trade (maybe that was December)
Supermarkets may be open but everything else closed will still impact, quite significantly I'd imagine.
I'm certainly not burying my head in any sand but I'm also not gonna concede after 5 weeks. And in the middle of this shit we're in |

you think that hotels ,restaurants leisure facilities etc that are shut make no difference?  .
You are interested in facts but seem to dismiss that the pandemic has any effect on trade.Unlike yourself businesses are not all bitter about brexit they will find solutions and continue to trade as long as they can make a profit they do not work on emotions.As for the rollover deals they are there for a continuation of trade but there is nothing in the way now to stop the uk renegotiating in the future. |

Sure it has some impact but you can't explain a drop of 68% with it. The hospitality sector would be mainly food and without knowing the figures I'd assume it's only a smallish part of the overall food export. |

Interesting stats here, our biggest export to France is normally aircraft, followed by oil, petroleum, jewellery.
Other categories in the list like electronics are a bit vague and hard to comment on but no question our main exports have a much reduced market during Covid.

Just reading Lionel's link. Not sure what the figures would be without Covid though the new rules would certainly make an impact. It mentions in the months to come the UK will be lifting the light touch approach it has used up until now so that could affect imports. With the hope full return to some normality that figure will not move much if its all down to the new regulations? |

I've just done a bit more research.
Goods exported to the EU in Jan 2020 was 13.6b. If were down 68% then that leaves a deficit of 9.2b.
Jan 2020 had a deficit to Jan 2019 of 1.6b. Why was this? It wasn't Covid or Brexit. |
