The volume of exports going through British ports to the EU fell by a staggering 68% last month compared with January last year, mostly as a result of problems caused by Brexit, the Observer can reveal |

I posted this on another thread but it's more relevant here.
I don't doubt hauliers are having a rough time of it. I'm certain it hasn't helped with France closing the borders too.
I'd just like to see long term figures before deciding whether export figures are down because of Brexit.
Who knows if and when it's all ironed out it may show that actually over the course of a couple of years that EU exports are down but others are up. Or maybe EU exports are not down at all.
These aren't questions that can be answered short term. We will only be able to see it over the course when figures are published. |

The article in the observer says that hauliers are going back empty.
Rather than take my word for it - best read the article. It is online.
France borders are shut but not to trade - sonthat makes no difference.
French bars and hotels are shut but supermarkets are open.
I enjoyed some nice prawns last night- from Norway.
Yes - agreed, long term is the measure however, lots of businesses are folding and jobs being lost.
A re-adjustment perhaps but tell that to those affected.
I am sure that on this forum plenty will tell me that I am incorrect and then article is wrong. Sunny uplands etc. and they are welcome to their beliefs.
I am more interested in fact and what is actually happening than fantasy and a need to justify a decision made on false promises.
The UK left the EU and many will not want to return plus, the EU would not welcome the UK back so that line is drawn whichever way you look at it.
The UK must make the best of where it is and denial is of no benefit to anyone.
The issues need to be accepted, acknowledged and a way to resolve these found.
The reader deals that Truss has signed are as a whole just roll overs with no additional benifits so stop fooling yourselves.
Work to make Britain as good as it can be rather than fantasizing over Farage. |

I have read the article.
French borders have been closed st times to trade (maybe that was December)
Supermarkets may be open but everything else closed will still impact, quite significantly I'd imagine.
I'm certainly not burying my head in any sand but I'm also not gonna concede after 5 weeks. And in the middle of this shit we're in |

You are interested in facts but seem to dismiss that the pandemic has any effect on trade.Unlike yourself businesses are not all bitter about brexit they will find solutions and continue to trade as long as they can make a profit they do not work on emotions. As for the rollover deals they are there for a continuation of trade but there is nothing in the way now to stop the uk renegotiating in the future. |

"I live in France - everything else is NOT closed.
There is a curfew from 1800 to 0600.
Perhaps you know more than me about life here?"
So everything is closed in the evenings then? When most of the hospitality industry would normally come alive.
That will have a huge impact. And don't forget the rest of the EU. It's not just France. |

yes - in the evenings offices, supermartkets etc. are all closed.
I don't know how people even manage to shop but somehow - we do.
I take your point however - Brexit is wonderful and the EU are nasty and causing all the problems.

You are wasting your breath.
Any rumour of good news and it's completely down to brexit, whilst any bad news is either the EU's fault or some other excuse.
Its quite fascinating really as you wonder at what point reality actually intrudes into a cult.
The article also states that the gmnt have just ignored their concerns for months and gove doesn't even reply to them.
Strange how this isnt even mentioned. |

Sure it has some impact but you can't explain a drop of 68% with it. The hospitality sector would be mainly food and without knowing the figures I'd assume it's only a smallish part of the overall food export. |

No you can't explain a drop of 68% with just one sector.
I'd still like to see how this has an effect longer term. 5 weeks is just not enough.
Can we explain why we're down 11% over the last 20 years whilst in the EU? |

Interesting stats here, our biggest export to France is normally aircraft, followed by oil, petroleum, jewellery.
Other categories in the list like electronics are a bit vague and hard to comment on but no question our main exports have a much reduced market during Covid.

Basically the main reason I'm here.
I like all the "what about something else" replies. Or the bizarre twists of logic to blame all the brexit bullshit on literally everything except brexit.
Aside from the standards, my favourites have been:
"The woke brigade"
"Lack of positive thought"
And I'll add the cafes in France being closed to that list. |

Ok if you want to discuss the whole EU, our biggest export at 12% of trade is oil and petroleum.
Let me just check on the demand for that....
Ah apparently due to Covid demand for that is massively down as well.

"yes - in the evenings offices, supermartkets etc. are all closed.
I don't know how people even manage to shop but somehow - we do.
I take your point however - Brexit is wonderful and the EU are nasty and causing all the problems.
Have to go now - I am off to play in a golf competition at the local club.
You don't think with most hospitality across Europe closed at different times it would have an impact?
Sure it has some impact but you can't explain a drop of 68% with it. The hospitality sector would be mainly food and without knowing the figures I'd assume it's only a smallish part of the overall food export.
Our biggest export to France is aircraft. No market for them during Covid.
And? The exports that go through French ports also go onto other EU countries, I am sure you knew that
OP is in France and the thread was querying what was open in France so I was responding to that if that’s ok with you.
Let me just check on aircraft export to other European countries.......
Ah apparently Covid has destroyed the aviation market across Europe.
Apparently? The aircraft industry accounts for 6 % of our exports to the EU,
Ok if you want to discuss the whole EU, our biggest export at 12% of trade is oil and petroleum.
Let me just check on the demand for that....
Ah apparently due to Covid demand for that is massively down as well.
We can keep going all day on this if you like. "
Yeah, let’s keep going until we find why our exports are 68% down |

"The volume of exports going through British ports to the EU fell by a staggering 68% last month compared with January last year, mostly as a result of problems caused by Brexit, the Observer can reveal"
is it UK sales to Europe that is down 68 or Europe to UK or a combination of the both. |

Just reading Lionel's link. Not sure what the figures would be without Covid though the new rules would certainly make an impact. It mentions in the months to come the UK will be lifting the light touch approach it has used up until now so that could affect imports. With the hope full return to some normality that figure will not move much if its all down to the new regulations? |

Once again remember to factor:
"Only 32 percent of French companies have web presence at all before the health crisis, and only 9 percent were able to sell goods online
It is estimated that some 63% of French companies are in discussions with finance houses to talk about possible insolvency or state aid to survive".
The vast majority of French companies are not ordering stock because they simply aren't open."
That will be roughly the same for most countries in Europe. |

Use your voices and votes when the time comes to make sure we get the best out of it we possibly can!
Remainers should be putting less energy into saying I told you so to leavers and more into putting your voices into discussion where we need to fix things. ..
And leavers need to stop celebrating shitty little miniscule victories and do whatever you can to pressure the government into turning this shit storm into the prosperous future they fucking promised...

In general yes.
But we can't even agree what the problem is.
For some brexit is untouchable and beyond critisim. For some brexit is one of the main problems we need to figure out how to mitigate against. |

I've just done a bit more research.
Goods exported to the EU in Jan 2020 was 13.6b. If were down 68% then that leaves a deficit of 9.2b.
Jan 2020 had a deficit to Jan 2019 of 1.6b. Why was this? It wasn't Covid or Brexit. |

Yes we can accept it.

Why do you keep going on about the Mail and the Express and Farage? 30/40/50years ago it was the Labour party who were campaigning to leave the EEC. In 1993 it was Labour who voted against signing the Maastricht Treaty (the formation of the EU) and in 1996/97 it was the Labour Party who promised to hold an EU referendum during their election campaign. Who knows, if they'd kept their promises they still might be in power today eh? |

So you don’t think calling Brexit a shitstorm is you saying I told you so..... utterly ridiculous.
I didn't say brexit was the shit storm. the political divide is the shit storm. They now have to unite both sides into facing forwards if they want to deliver the prosperous future they promised.
The division isn't going away anytime soon. It's been engineered and push onto us. It's the way that those at the top keep power and wealth. It's how they pulled off brexit.
It's a tool to control the population.
The only division i see is on here by a few having trouble coming to terms with the loss of their beloved eu.
Yes there are some having problems with the paperwork that they will eventually work out but there is no major division in the country as far as i can see even the lib dems seem to have accepted it now."
Then you're simply being willfully ignorant.
The division was always there between the haves and the have nots. Brexit was a decades long campaign to have more "have nots" vote in favour of the "haves".
There is no one who doesn't accept that brexit happened. There are people who bury their head in the sand and pretend everything is amazing. And there are people who see all the problems we had before, magnified. |

Firstly, it's not just for me. I have empathy for everyone whose losing out.
Secondly, I could list out a huge bunch of brexit negatives. But we have had that conversation a million times, and we all know how it ends.
A brexiteer picks one point, we argue over it for a while. Ends with someone saying "remoaners"...
A. Have mental health problems.
B. Should leave the UK.
C. Should be shot.
D. Just need to be more positive.
E. Should just shut the fuck up.

For 20 years the Labour Party were telling the working class people that the EU was bad for them, then as soon as they get a whiff of power they say, oh sorry, we've now decided that the EU is good for you. Well sorry guys, people aren't that stupid. They've reaped what they've sewn |

We left the realms of reality far behind.
But I understood. "Brexit is good" and "Labour are shit because they wanted brexit".
None of which seemed related to the conversation.
Where do you go from here. |

What, you think everyone who lived during the 70s 80s and early 90s is dead? Next minute you will be telling me it was mainly young people who voted for Brexit |
