EU shellfish import ban permanent, UK fishing industry told

It is just as well this Government supported the Fishermen through Brexit and fought for a ‘great deal’. I mean they would have been shafted otherwise. Oh, hang on - they have been shafted. Shame on the Tory’s yet again

I dont think it matters what evidence you present tbh.

There was a letter in the local paper today about a company who have been advised to relocate to the EU to save in post brexit costs.

They were going to create 20 jobs, not a lot obviously but imagine how namy companies are doing it up and down the country?

And people come on here and say with a straight face that's some sort of positive and if you disagree you are labelled a remoaner.

It truly is like a cult.

Wouldn’t it have been nice if the fishermen hadn’t been screwed by those that promised them the earth?

Maybe it will start to sow a seed of recognition with the other Brexiteers - this is a sham.

So firms thought the rules would change and now they aren't?

These have always been the rules for the EU.

When visiting northern Ireland in 2016 he said 'nothing will change'

He stated categorically in parliament the erasmus scheme would stay

He told the people of Cornwall they wouldnt lose out on the eu money

People are quite happy we have a serial liar running the country.

So what do you think will happen.

A) the people of the eu pay a lot more for their shellfish due to limited supply which will be getting smaller every year.

B) someone in the uk realizes there is a lucrative business to be had with purification.

C) That some of the businesses in the eu that do it relocate to the uk rather than go bust.

That won’t happen as EU fishermen will take up the shortfall in the market as they are legally allowed to fish for shellfish in UK waters and will be landed in Europe ports. So prices will probably remain the same for customers as profits made from decreased transport costs will be taken up by EU fishermen..

It turns out the uk already has 50 such plants in operation so it actually turns out to be good news, we will now be doing all that work instead of farming some out to eu companies who will lose the business.it just goes to show you should look beyond the headlines.

Actually there are no official quotas. The NFFO advocates a regional dimension to shellfish conservation done on a voluntary basis

With a principal concern to cap shellfishing at current levels.

You need to understand the difference between quotas imposed for fish and where there are no quotas for shellfish

"So what do you think will happen.

A) the people of the eu pay a lot more for their shellfish due to limited supply which will be getting smaller every year.

That won’t happen as EU fishermen will take up the shortfall in the market as they are legally allowed to fish for shellfish in UK waters and will be landed in Europe ports. So prices will probably remain the same for customers as profits made from decreased transport costs will be taken up by EU fishermen..

Not so they are subject to quotas.

Actually there are no official quotas. The NFFO advocates a regional dimension to shellfish conservation done on a voluntary basis

With a principal concern to cap shellfishing at current levels.

You need to understand the difference between quotas imposed for fish and where there are no quotas for shellfish "

Interesting and informative post.

"I dont think it matters what evidence you present tbh.

Don’t worry, we have been promised we will see the benefits of Brexit in 10 years, no way how could anyone label you guys remoaners it’s not like you’ve been saying same thing day in day week on week our year after year tell me who said that and I’ll have words with the cheeky twats you’d moaning asif ffs

Come on mate, give us ‘remoaners’ a Brexit benefit there was the other week woth Nissan most the remainers shit themselves and avoided it buddy and you know it atleast you and sky surfer didn’t tho a hardent remainder from up this way didn’t have much to say on it tho probs because spent yrs telling us it would close down lol

So your Brexit benefit is that Nissan didn’t close down? you asked me for one I gave you one it’s not closing down it’s creating more jobs isn’t that great news o could put down all the things remainers said would happen that have t but it’s all been said and done so no point Unlike some I’m not one for saying the same shot over and over again lol

Tell that to the 160 staff losing their jobs at Nissan...

“Nissan plans to cut around 160 jobs under an efficiency drive in the wake of its decision to commit to post-Brexit UK.”whick will be more tban replaced with the batteries jobs there relocating from Japan

We’re these new jobs only created because we left the EU??"

I’m not to sure but according to Nissan this deal gives them a competitive advantage so you can make of that what you will mate

C) That some of the businesses in the eu that do it relocate to the uk rather than go bust.

Imagine if they hadn't been forced into these shitty options you're providing here. How great would that have been?no answer either?

My answer is, I have no idea if any of these three options you provided will happen.

To be clear. I voted not to fuck over the fishing industry.i really cant see any other options either the eu stop eating shellfish or someone sets up a filtration plant.

Or they buy more from Spain, Italy and Portugal so developing those country’s farms. Now there’s a simple idea! Great there will be food on the tables in France phew!

Those annoying U.K. fishermen can work for Amazon . "

They have crab prawn and scallop farms? they wont be catching so much in uk waters so better do something, the uk is banning bottom trawlers in a lot of areas for conversation reasons something they could not do while in the eu.

I voted against this current mess and raft of job losses. Sadly more people voted for the current mess and job losses.

If more people had spoken up, and if more people question the government. Maybe they won't have as much of a free ride fucking us all over.

I'm not saying that doesn't happen.

The point I'm making is that it's easier to slag off "remoaners" than to actually face what's going on in this country.

I don't think it's a lost cause, so will continue to speak up. Write to my MP. Vote. Attend protests when it's safe to do so. Etc etc.

I really don't see how you can claim a manufacturing plant not closing as a benefit. To benefit one usually has to find a clear advantage, some sort of gain, an improvement. Something remaining the same, even if it was possibly going to fail, is not a benefit, it's equilibrium.

We’re these new jobs only created because we left the EU?? I’m not to sure but according to Nissan this deal gives them a competitive advantage so you can make of that what you will mate

True, I am pleased for the Nissan workers but gutted for the fishing industry and so am I mate gutted for the steel workers ship builders miners as much as any one who looses a job the fishermen seem to have gotten the shit end of the stick for now

All totally avoidable though.

Which is why we speak up. And that's why we get called "moaners" etc etc.

And the cycle continues.by speaking up have you’d saved any jobs the don’t recall much moaning in the press about the Teesside steel workers jobs going tbh mate but it was only Teesside after all lol

I voted against this current mess and raft of job losses. Sadly more people voted for the current mess and job losses.

If more people had spoken up, and if more people question the government. Maybe they won't have as much of a free ride fucking us all over.

But hey, it's probably easier to just call people moaners or say we have mental health issues. mate you say that like some remainers don’t call leavers racists traitors uneducated scum don’t pretend you’ve not seen that shite

I'm not saying that doesn't happen.

The point I'm making is that it's easier to slag off "remoaners" than to actually face what's going on in this country.

I don't think it's a lost cause, so will continue to speak up. Write to my MP. Vote. Attend protests when it's safe to do so. Etc etc. "

and good for you mate I respect they you acknowledge both sides say some shit to each other on here mare than I do fadtastic for saying he asnt seen it and atleast you try and change things off fab hats of to you for that

"I dont think it matters what evidence you present tbh.

More people should do that. Whatever they think is in the best interest of the country.

People on both sides of this divide say awful shit to eachother. It doesn't help.

I really don't see how you can claim a manufacturing plant not closing as a benefit. To benefit one usually has to find a clear advantage, some sort of gain, an improvement. Something remaining the same, even if it was possibly going to fail, is not a benefit, it's equilibrium. "

like the advantage that Nissan said the Brexit deal gives them a competitive advantage and that there moving there batterie operation from Japan to the U.K. and will create more jobs you mean that benefit?

"So what do you think will happen.

A) the people of the eu pay a lot more for their shellfish due to limited supply which will be getting smaller every year.

B) someone in the uk realizes there is a lucrative business to be had with purification.

C) That some of the businesses in the eu that do it relocate to the uk rather than go bust.

They have crab prawn and scallop farms? they wont be catching so much in uk waters so better do something, the uk is banning bottom trawlers in a lot of areas for conversation reasons something they could not do while in the eu."

It’s beam trawlers you’re talking about I think and they should have been banned decades ago. A lot of southern fishermen followed the Dutch with these and they are so destructive.

They drag heavy beams along the sea bead forcing flat fish out of the mud but in doing so destroy all the plant life. I’ve seen scans of the North Sea and it’s like a painter with a roller has just gone mad whitewashed the seabed. If you look closer it’s just desolate strips with no life.

Again fishermen are their own worst enemies. It will put a few U.K. fishermen out of business but having seen the destruction I don’t actually care. There are more friendly sustainable ways to fish.

Yes I believe farms produce a lot of shellfish like scallops see Rick Stein’s tv program on how they do it. There are prawn farms popping up. One in the middle of Lincolnshire bizarrely. Crab I think is more an American thing to farm, but given that we have cod farms in Scotland I’m sure other countries are developing farming too. It’s surprising how much isn’t wild anymore. It’s driven by the desire for sustainability and environmental impact.

The cod is like salmon not as firm a meat as the wild stuff but saves the wild population.

yeah i forgot i have seen the devastation the prawn farms have caused in India where they flood fertile land with sea water for it never to return to anything of any use. They then drop the price and the poor bastards are trapped into supplying them for ever at a price the buyers dictate.

totally agree with banning that way of fishing too and pulse fishing which the dutch seem to favour.

It is defra that now sets the rules so if i was an eu fisherman i would be very concerned that the eu dont push the uk too far. What was it Macron said? if we make it hard enough for them they will be begging to rejoin in 6 months .

You’re right about the Indian farms I watched a documentary on that but the Norwegians are investing in Spanish farms. A lot more ethical and sustainable. Are we trying to get closer to the Indian business economy? Sure Liz truss says so. We really need to push back with some of this shit I’m sure we all agree. Deals at any price can’t be right.

You know that its china who are fucking them over for the prawns then.

the uk,s main export is in the service industries so yes a good time to deal with India i would say. If you wanted to go down the labour party route and not deal with anyone on what you perceive as ethics im afraid to say you wouldn't deal with anyone.

Ok, so you believe that we should only trade with countries that allow abortions and promote womans rights? I’d like to think this was true

not quiet you need to keep up to date Emily Thornberry (yes i thought she had disapeared too) was banging on about ethical trading and why we had signed a deal with Kenya with whats going on over there saudi too but thats nothing new.I am just pointing out no country would do any trade that way. personally i dont agree with what is happening in a lot of countries but im sure there are lots of countries that would only be to happy to pick up the trade if the uk decided to to the moral high ground.
