It is a combination of both, it is no coincidence that a large percentage of COVID deniers, anti vaxers, lockdown protesters etc also voted for Brexit |

Which one of those things seems out of place?
Didn't Farage move directly from brexit to anti-lockdown anti-science with his new party?
Ukip are also anti-science climate deniers.
If you're choosing to put your belief in non-science over science, wouldn't that inherently make you more susceptible to pro brexit propaganda? |

This was a poll of 1600 people.
17.5 million people voted to leave the EU.
To assume that poll represents the entire 17.5M is staggering to be quite honest.! |

"so this is what you are basing your theory on or did you just read the headlines?
Close to half of respondents who voted for Brexit (47%) and Trump (44%) believe their government is hiding the truth about immigration, compared with just 14% of Remain voters and 12% of Clinton voters.
so this is proof they they are more likely to believe conspiracy theories. "
You must have some data that proves this incorrect ? |

The only region in England to return a majority vote to remain is also the region with the highest number Covid-19 cases, ie London.
All other regions returned a majority leave vote and currently the 3 regions with the lowest infection rates are, in descending order, North East, South West and Yorkshire and Humber.

Not disputing that but the figures are cases per 100K of population and London currently stands at 702, next highest region is West Midlands at 574 |

Depends on how you define region
Liverpool city region voted overwhelmingly to stay.
The wider area voted to leave
So I'd say the area was split. |

Back to the original question, a couple of studies and a poll posted so far appears to show a correlation between belief in political extremism and conspiracy fantasies.
Ignoring brexit for the moment does anyone have a counter argument that goes against the premise of the posed question? |

Newcastle upon Tyne voted to remain but it isn’t a region, the North East is the region, as is the North West.
I’m not defining these regions, they are the accepted regional make up of England and both the EU Referendum results and the Covid-19 infection rates are released by those regions.

"my second youngest as part of their DProf has compiled a geographical map of brexit vote data and another of covid 19 incidence for the previous year. he showed me them as a series of overlays and the similarity between worst affected areas of covid and percentage of leave vote is striking.
The only region in England to return a majority vote to remain is also the region with the highest number Covid-19 cases, ie London.
All other regions returned a majority leave vote and currently the 3 regions with the lowest infection rates are, in descending order, North East, South West and Yorkshire and Humber.
Try breaking up the regions to give a more accurate picture.
You do it!
I have, using regions is vague ,
If it’s vague enough for the electoral commission then its vague enough for me.
Yes, it’s vague, glad you agree "
You obviously missed the sarcasm |

"Back to the original question, a couple of studies and a poll posted so far appears to show a correlation between belief in political extremism and conspiracy fantasies.
Ignoring brexit for the moment does anyone have a counter argument that goes against the premise of the posed question?"
TBH, after reading some of the nonsense that gets posted in these fora, I would say that there is probably some truth in the survey findings.

What is your definition of "political extremism" in the context of this question?

That is kind of a subjective question depending on your viewpoint
But normally politically extremism is defined as an ideology that is considered to be outside of the mainstream policies. |

It's a difficult one as trump has changed the Landscape that much.Truth and reality simply dont exist anymore as he simply denied it,and people believed it.
And of course when reality sinks in,the only explanation is the conspiracy theory.
It happens here to a much lesser event. The bbc were reporting yesterday that the gmnt had never supported trump.
It's almost like a stalinist revision of history which the media didn't question.
Maybe not directly linked to conspiracy theories but when the past is rewritten, is it any wonder people look for explanations.
Maybe when politicians just lie on a daily basis it give credence to such theories..left or right? |

It's easier to answer with specifics.
There's plenty of overlap of conspiracy theories and politics. Such as with climate change denial. |

Or
Does belief in conspiracy fantasies make you more politically extreme...

The answer to both of those questions, in reality, is no.
Oddly enough, though, if you're politically extreme and/or a lover of conspiracy theories; there's a higher than 50% chance that you're some sort of cunt. |

Conspiracy theories and disinformation have been a feature of those with authoritarian leanings for nearly 100 years now. You can still see this happening in the USA, Poland and Hungary. We saw President Obama being undermined with questions about his birth and religion. Hillary was damaged with Pizzagate and now a frightening level of Americans believe that Biden stole the election. Qanon unfortunately has a willing audience with the right wing.

It is a combination of both, it is no coincidence that a large percentage of COVID deniers, anti vaxers, lockdown protesters etc also voted for Brexit Do you have any data to back that claim up?
Yeah I'd like to see this data too

No she didn't. She did say that Trump tried to corrupt the election. Given what we now know about russian interference and assisting Trump's election, she's not wrong. |

I have doubts that I have the patience or ability to continue this conversation in a form that you can comprehend so I'll dip out for now. |

I would imagine some anti-vaxxers would be as annoyed at being associated with brexiteers.
But just to be clear, so we can understand you correctly, what makes the person who said this a "racist". He didn't appear to mention ethnicity, race, skin colour etc. |

I think conspiracy theories pull people further away from politics to be honest. It's ideology that draws people to conspiracies. They are usually the first to shout "fake news." Reminds me of someone here. |
