Washington DC is not a State in the US, it has a population bigger than Wyoming andVermont, butonly slightly smaller than Alaska and North Dakota. Because it is not a State, itspopulation do not have any representation.
Not being a State means that the Mayor does not have the equivalence of a Governor. So their is no co-ordination of the Police and National Guard.
It would seem like the time is right to make Washington DC a State. The fact that it will give 2 new Democrat Senators and 1 new Democrat Representative is merely an outcome of doing the right thing. ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

No that's wrong, an act of congress would do it. |

The whole point of Washington DC was that it was originally designed to be a federal city so that the capital cannot be claimed by any one state.
But the District is not a state and so has no voting representation in Congress.
But Congress has supreme authority over the city and can overturn local laws.
Several proposals have been suggested to resolve these concerns but the founding fathers never intended for district residents to have a vote in Congress as the constitution states that representation must come from the states. Making D.C. a state would destroy the notion of a separate capital and statehood would give the Senate unfair representation to a single city.
Unravel that conundrum....

Let me just check Wikipedia on that....
Well I suppose Congress could have a go at introducing any law they liked.
But the judges could still deem it unconstitutional..... |

It is complex, but Alaska has the same population as the District of Washington. If the DC border can be where it physically is, why can it not also have a ring around the Capitol? Problem solved. Or alternatively DC is devolved into Maryland & Virginia? |

"Puerto Rico needs the voice. Time to make them a state too."
I agree on them needing a voice. I guess they should be offered a referendum (god help us all!) on being independent or becoming the 51st State. I’m not sure which way it would go, but I don’t think the answer is just to declare they are no longer a colony, but are now a State ![](/icons/s/mrgreen.gif) |

Reducing the District to the Capitol and other federal building has been previously suggested but it still works potentially encapsulate some residents and thus no representation in congress.
As for your last point this is covered in my lasts post. That the district would come under control of a state which goes against the notion of an independent capital free from state legislature as per the constitution.
So no problem not solved.... |

The US comedian Bill Maher, who runs an excellent politics chat show on HBO, has often said there shouldn't be two Dakotas - it's the Dakota territory. Maher's annoyed there are relatively few people who live there, and yet they get four senators, double the number of California.
So if Washington DC gets statehood and North and South Dakota are merged, the Americans would save a lot of money on new flags... |
