Boris Johnson father seeking French citizenship.
Jump to: Newest in thread
Think it's taking the biscuit that Boris Johnson's father is applying for a French passport. No doubt if he gets issued with one Boris will follow suit and get one.
Now that really would be taking the mickey. |

What's the problem, he is someone who wants to remain a part of the EU community and has done something about it. |

I agree with you don't blame him for being part of the European community as he has a French mother but we haven't. So us wanting to be part of the European community is not possible now. |

Obvious hypocrisy on this issue from all the Brexiteers, considering in other posts you're pointing out how little will change, why is Johnson's own father seeking EU citizenship? |

It also will give him non domicile status if he continues to live in the U.K. which will mean he doesn’t have to pay uk tax.
Just like the owner of the Daily Mail . But I’m sure that’s nothing to do with anything.
Free to travel all of Europe unlike the rest of us but also free of that nasty tax thingy! |

Is it hard to understand that someone who wants to remain part of the EU community has got off his arse and done something about it rather than sit behind a keyboard and moan about it.
If that is what he has chosen to do good luck to him. |

The irish passport office has been overwhelmed the last couple of years with UK applicants.
Number of people in the UK with at least one Irish grandparent or their spouse having an Irish grandparent is staggering.

Look up Jonathan Harmsworth.
He owns the daily Mail, lives in Wiltshire and pays no tax because his grandmother was French.
It’s called non domicile for tax purposes.

Nigel Farage sought German citizenship for his children following the brexit referendum.....
Funny how he sought the benefits of EU citizenship for his children whilst actively denying it for everyone else....
Let me think..... isn’t there a word for that

Nigel Farage's wife and mother of his children is German so the children are entitled to duel nationality. |

You are correct that his children are entitled to German citizenship due to their mothers nationality.
Doesn’t takes away from the fact that he only sought it after the referendum.

" i believe nigel Farage first wife was Irish, a woman called Kathleen who was a nurse he met while he was recovering in hospital, for a ultra English nationalist fascist he surely could have found a true blue blood English rose to breed with, very unpatriotic of him to marry riff raff like the germans or god help us the Irish |

Look up HMRC and non dom tax. Just because Stanley has got dual nationality does not make him a non dom, I've not looked up where he was born or the nationality of his father, he would have to inform HMRC of his intention to go non dom and they would decide if that is lawful for tax purposes, depending on which country his income comes from he "might" be able to pay tax there rather than here but there are rules over double taxation. One thing is certain very very few would choose to have France as their tax base over the uk, especially if they have been divorced in the past |

So he can live in the U.K. and be Non domicile then!
He won’t chose France as his tax residency and neither does John Harmsworth. Being non domicile is the only box that needs ticking.
Jonathan Harmsworth’s income comes from his trust based in the British Virgin isles ( a U.K. dominion) which in turn is is paid into by the Daily Mail They don’t sell many papers there do they?
It’s a simple matter of setting up the process which you can do if your non domicile as the U.K. has no control over your income path.
Look into how many Russians and very rich brits are living in London but who don’t pay tax on any U.K. income. It is in my opinion one of the leading reasons for Brexit. Those people funded Boris and Farage because they knew EU law was changing to stop such tax loopholes.

"Has he applied for this non domicile status or just wants to live in France?"
No idea. That’s up to him and he can chose.
We will probably never know. It’s only due to investigating journalists and the Panama papers that we have found so many tax avoiders so far. The records aren’t normally public.

The reason any of these people are applying for Irish passports is to ensure they have the same privileges as the rest of th EU members should they need to. I dont think were gonna see an influx of UK refugees or anything.
Most of my cousins in the UK including the ones who serve or have served in the armed forces have had Irish passports most their adult lives |

"He can do what he wants, it’s nobody else’s business. I did hear from friends in France that Boris only championed Brexit to spite his father."
interesting theory .... it appears from a variety of reliable sources that alexander was starved of his fathers attention whilst he was growing up. i was going to say "when he was a little boy" there, but in many ways he comes across as still being one.
he quite possibly feels a need to punish his dad. |

They all served in the navy where they got to travel the world and gain great qualifications which have benefited them greatly in the private sector.
Unfortunately they didnt have any influence on bringing peace to Ireland. But like thousands of other British nationals they will enjoy uncomplicated travel within the EU thanks to their Irish passports, and I imagine anyone with eligibility for polish, Italian passports etc will do the same |

All he is doing is applying for dual nationality, he is not going for non dom status AFAIK "
Why is he bothering if it’s not a good thing for him? Just having a second passport won’t save him anything .
Oh hang yes he can travel freely through Europe and live where he likes at anytime for as long as he likes . Now that would be nice if we could all do that wouldn’t it! Oh and on again we voted to end that.
Then on top of that he can apply for non dom if he fancies to save a few quid.

Your either entitled to a passport or not, so if some one has a qualifying relative they are welcome to one.

Up until 31December I could stay in the south of France as long as I liked and work remotely from there while being a U.K. citizen .
That’s what being part of the EU allows .
I now can’t stay for more than 3 months at a time without being a resident .
It’s that simple.
Divorce is a totally different thing . Getting divorced in France can be a nightmare but not already being divorced.

Yes you can you need one of those things called a visa, as for divorce it may have changed, but when I looked at buying some property in france to keep.my then ex wife from having any interest in it if I died before her was quite difficult.
No one would chose france as your primary tax country over the uk for either income or capital gains. |

"Has he applied for this non domicile status or just wants to live in France?
All he is doing is applying for dual nationality, he is not going for non dom status AFAIK
Not paying his tax in france he wont and if he has ever been divorced he could well open a can of worms if he has french property.
A visa is something that I didn’t need to apply for before and it isn’t permanent and can’t be removed at any time . So I have to claim residency if I want to stay beyond and pay tax in France which I didn’t do before.
Loss loss isn’t it.
I know the law you’re referring to and a local French lawyer can obtain an order to clean up any risk for you and stop your ex from claiming .
A good friend of mine years ago had to sell his villa as he didn’t sort it before the divorce and she ended up with both his U.K. house being handed to his ex wife voluntarily but then with half his french house being handed over too and definitely not voluntarily .
Not a happy man. He sorted the break with his solicitor and bought a smaller villa . |

He could only live there as long as he liked provided he could fund himself. Pretty much how it will be now
Yes true, but I could fund myself but not stay as I’m now not allowed .
That’s a loss of a good benefit.
Yes you can if you make yourself a resident "
I don’t want to pay French tax just stay in the villa for as long as I want.
I can’t now

However you spin this travel and staying abroad is harder and more costly due to losing free movement.
It’s a loss of a great benefit for both holiday homes and older petiole who want to winter in Spain but keep being British for the NHS and being able to come home anytime.
When a lot of ex pats get ill they come home to the U.K. so don’t want residency. |

i think jackal is alluding to the fact that previous to brexit it was completely uncecessary to go through the protracted, convoluted and greatly expensive processes surrounding imigration to reap the benefits that default EU passport status afforded people.

Now that really would be taking the mickey. "

As I mentioned I could spend winter or summer in France or Spain and not worry about how long I’d stayed or do I need to send off a visa application to stay longer. £26 per application pound now and if they want further questions answering I have to travel to the consul relevant to my application back in the U.K.
Costs all the way again and just the hassle of applying along with the risk of a no!
It’s just crap and yet another backwards step for the people of this country .
Isolation all the way is not good .

I built my business from the age of 18 so know the low end of world problems.
My business was helped to grow by me being able to travel and work freely in the EU. Which you must agree would be preferable for all of today’s workers.
Today’s younger population won’t have that fabulous advantage.
It was only good news for an individual’s opportunities and for business.
I don’t need to worry as I’m financially sorted but I was lucky I had the EU advantage . Our young entrepreneurs have been hindered. So their problems not yours or mine.
But our legacy ! We should be ashamed .

"It also will give him non domicile status if he continues to live in the U.K. which will mean he doesn’t have to pay uk tax.
Just like the owner of the Daily Mail . But I’m sure that’s nothing to do with anything.
Free to travel all of Europe unlike the rest of us but also free of that nasty tax thingy!
Absolute rubbish he will not get non dom status if he lives in the uk
Look up Jonathan Harmsworth.
He owns the daily Mail, lives in Wiltshire and pays no tax because his grandmother was French.
It’s called non domicile for tax purposes.
One thing is certain very very few would choose to have France as their tax base over the uk, especially if they have been divorced in the past
"
Don't we have a double taxation agreement with France whereas we don't with the British Virgin Islands? I don't think non doms can avoid personal income tax simply by living in France, they won't pay twice but will in one country or the other. |

Well how did you manage when you were 18?"
I didn’t work in the EU when I was 18. Mrs thatcher was pushing hard at the time for closer ties with the EC.
The closer we got to the EC over the years the more business I won and my business grew. Eventually with my being able to travel freely between countries I could drive merrily around. Oh and when the Euro came in that was brilliant. I didn’t have to keep half a dozen currencies in separate pockets.
Working in Europe was easy. Now it it isn’t so easy. Zero rating on VAT for B2B made life easy regarding accounts and invoicing.
We have cancelled exports this week and next because the hauliers have refused to come to the U.K. over fears of delays over paperwork and checks. . They will try in the third week of January.
Let’s hope their fears are groundless . They will stop coming if the delays continue.
Oh when we need T1 documentation the average turn around routine for HMRC is two hours. That means trucks have to wait. Now there are millions more T1 forms needed let’s see how long those delays are.
Chief was crashing well before Brexit. The software providers of IT systems can’t introduce new software because HMRC hasn’t got its new system working properly yet. (5 years and waiting.)
So Chief has been expanded not improved.
The government says business must be ready. Well they can’t be because the government isn’t ready.
Did you read the government is relaxing the process for exporters in the first three to six months.
Reasons?
IT not ready
Not enough customs capacity
Not enough inspectors
Clearance houses can’t cope with new customers as not enough staff.
Our own clearance houses stopped taking new clients in November.
Business unable to plan due to lack of written rules to replace EU rules.
Those lorry parks are being built because Gove and co aren’t ready, not just businesses..
Boris says no delay on Brexit but reality is we’re just not ready as a country. He has no clue as to the detail. I think the government are lining up to blame the French.
Found out yesterday raw processed meat products like sausages now banned from export unless frozen . Who knew?
Btw we are fortunate as we export to the rest of the world so know how customs works. The set up with the EU is not ready.
Please feel free to look up VAT returns and how to get your money back. It very light reading as the information is so very thin.
Oh and for those that say speak to HMRC we do regularly and they don’t know. Both our clearance providers have both asked HMRC the same question and got two completely different answers. There are fines for getting it wrong. You couldn’t make this up!
We are having to find our own way through the fiscal representation rules for each of the 27 countries by dealing direct with each country’s vat offices.
But it’s a Free trade agreement isn’t it?. No barriers or costs to trade we keep being told. Just lies.
Business will get there and trade I have no doubt but I wonder at what ultimate cost.

Just lies.
Business will get there and trade I have no doubt but I wonder at what ultimate cost
" That sums it up including for my own business, but what people dont realise is while it's being sorted customers are finding new suppliers and will never come back.
Brexit costing money and jobs. |

No idea. That’s up to him and he can chose.
We will probably never know. It’s only due to investigating journalists and the Panama papers that we have found so many tax avoiders so far. The records aren’t normally public.

So it's not a given then that he will be non domicile. Hopefully these journalists will be on the case. |

I'm not sure what we can do with the brexit pig we are where we are, it's like the poster earlier who thinks he can pop to France after 90 days like when he was 18, completely ignorant and uninformed makes me worried. |

maybe we should encourage everybody who has the opportunity to to hold a legacy eu passport to do so. eventually the majority of the country would be able to hold an eu passport as a result.
this would make sense as we are currently at our apogee of being outside the eu and from here on in we will gradually develope closer ties through trade negotiation as we align ourselves with the union to increase commerce with them. i feel this may be inevitable. |

This is the sort of crap Johnson was trying to push on Marr this morning while being asked perfectly reasonable questions about Covid, School and Brexit.
The man is all about making empty promises, the problem is Covid is showing them up and soon Brexit will too, it isn't enough just to believe you have to actually back it up. |

Hi Silverhorn
I have to be optimistic because so many people’s jobs are relying on me getting through this crap.
Other than just always saving face Boris could have helped us all by getting the rules IT etc in place and helping us with delaying the transition. He didn’t want to take criticism just like stalling the bad news at Christmas or the delayed lockdowns.
He should have done the best for our country’s business in a bad situation. He put his own ego first yet again.
What is so frustrating is our own leaders for self interest have brought us into the quagmire.
There are no benefits to being away from the EU. Having our passports printed in Poland should have been an alarm bell to you.
That’s our own government choosing to do that!
Does that create more jobs in tne U.K. NO.
I suspect there will be a U.K. holding somewhere that will take some of the profit though and claim it’s a U.K. business.
I’m guessing so don’t know that for a fact. But it’s the way this country usually decides how to spend our money.

This idea of exiting and restarting the counter reminded me of the good old days of doing exactly this in Hong Kong and China. The authorities eventually started making it more difficult to use the loophole and instead made it easier to get the official visa or permit to allow you to stay for longer periods . The net result after a bit of paperwork was, nothing changed for those who needed to be there longer than the default length of time ... and for the majority, it wasn’t an issue anyway . |

Ah the good old days, bit like silver popping to France for the day 40 years ago (when he was 9) great times indeed, however because of security issues things are a bit stricter now so those days are gone. Blame Brexit. |

I think they will in some way as you’re correct we do spend a lot there.
but I suspect it will cost more to do it as the Spanish can always see a nice little earner when we’ve asked for it! .
Also the brits are being caught up by the Germans Belgians and Dutch in Spain so we’re not so Billy big bollocks anymore.

A man who was voted mayor of London twice, who helped win the referendum, who won the Tory leadership contest, who won the general election with an 80 seat majority, who got Brexit done, who oversaw the biggest free trade agreement in history is a man clearly not out of his depth or to be underestimated, that is the mistake his opponents make. Good for him. One of the benefits of Western living is the ability to apply for residency and naturalization to a country of ones choosing.
Bodes well for others who might wish to do the same - in both directions I might add. |

"I have worked with people who are clearly out of their depth maybe over promoted or just wrong place. Our glorious leader is actually running the country and after watching him this morning. He is in charge to a degree of my life, its frightening isn't it.
Name someone who has achieved more? "
He was swept to power in London by the wave of anti Livingston feeling as Livingston couldn’t get the money for the projects he wanted.
The first term for mayor Boris were spent on the Olympics. He was re-elected on that wave of enthusiasm.
It all started to unravel when the actual truths came out.
Boris bikes were Livingston bikes
Affordable housing rules were changed and the boom in housing centred on the expensive end while London’s affordable stock dropped.
The money started to run out and he couldn’t cope without wonderful projects to big up like cross rail.
He lost because Londoners began to realise he was just fluff and rhetoric but no substance or plan.
He stabbed Cameron in the back after claiming to be a supporter of the EU. Then running to the right to lead the Brexit bus.
He lied his way into a Brexit victory. Claiming mass immigration and losing control etc etc.
He’s avoided scrutiny on the real costs of leaving at every turn and avoided hard journalists because he can’t cope with a serious question.
Even this last few days Laura Kuenssberg asked him a question saying business has costs with the deal can you agree with that statement of fact?
His answer again “We will proper mightily” so yet again avoid the question. Only he didn’t have a fridge to hide in this time so it want as funny.
. He’s just full of shit and I detest what he stands for in cheap tv politics.
His marketing and control of the media message is outstanding that must be said. What a shame it’s just lie after lie.
I’ve voted Tory most of my life but couldn’t knowing who this guy is and what he stands for.
I sincerely hope he proves me wrong and the north of the U.K. propers and costs fall for business.
I also hope our food employment and environment standards stay up So far he’s running away from facts. |

"Think it's taking the biscuit that Boris Johnson's father is applying for a French passport. No doubt if he gets issued with one Boris will follow suit and get one.
Now that really would be taking the mickey.
Good for him. One of the benefits of Western living is the ability to apply for residency and naturalization to a country of ones choosing.
Bodes well for others who might wish to do the same - in both directions I might add. "
i'm not that is at all correct. stanley is doing neither it would appear. he seems to be claiming under his mothers legacy so no need for the protracted, convoluted and greatly expensive processes surrounding imigration that is now the reality for the majority of the UK |

Must be joking... Boris (Christian) Johnson worships the Queen who worships the Supernatural and hides her Son "
I dunno bud.
I just said Genghis khan, because he beats Boris in most categories.
Death count.
Illegitimate children.
Clear message.

But wouldn't we all do that? I'm one half French, I would do that if and when I wish to retire to France. But in reality it may score you a point or two to have 'blood' in France, but the ability to support oneself, general character, been resident for a cumulative 5 years, is mainly what is assessed during the course of an application for residency or naturalization.

as said he seems to be neither applying for residency nor naturalization, but going an entirely different far easier route and applying for his french passport by default of parentage. you seem to be mixing the three things up, maybe deliberately |

So now everytime we want to criticise the government, we have to have a full proposal for how we would start a new political party, how we would fund it, who the figurehead would be?
The lengths people go to in order to defend Boris are getting more bizarre.
