Yes I understand you keep the EHIC card until it expires then replace with the global one. "
Yes so as well as being covered in Europe it will include places like Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean |

"While the European Health Insurance Card was cool for travelers on a low income or for 'backpackers' et-al.
It has never really been a proper substitute for proper insurance.
"
I went on holiday to Mexico once with a group of mates and one turned up flourishing his EHIC telling us how he didn’t need insurance.
His little face when we told him. |

But you were the only one to mention him. Are you not pleased about this card? It's more than we had as EU members isn't it? |

Ok....so SOME think its "cool".
What are the provisions? What are the costs? At this end AND at destination? What are exemptions? Are there any hidden extras? What level of health care does it include? Does it cover out of pocket travel expenses? What about family accommodation due to one member being incapacitated abroad?
And if you say your travel insurance should cover this, why on earth is a global health insurance card necessary? |

It covers exactly the same as the EHIC card did and is free, for goodness sake, are you saying that the EHIC card was a waste of time now we've left the EU? |

Two main reasons, if you read the small print in your holiday insurance you will notice it says you must try and claim costs from other sources before your own insurance, this includes home insurance for phones, cameras etc etc, travel companies for cancellations, ie abta and atol, and for medical costs you ehic, without these things holiday insurance would be far dearer restricting travel for poorer people and meaning some are bankrupted by health costs if Ill abroad,

No, I am not saying that AT ALL. I ASKED what the provisions are.
Any implication that I am saying that exist ONLY in your mind. |

More info. The GHIC is a replacement for the EHIC but details are sketchy and it has been noted that it will be introduced "sometime in the future" so you cannot currently get one and the gvmt has yet to provide any further information.
EHIC are no longer to be issued, although those still in date are valid.
If you wish medical treatment abroad and dont have a valid EHIC then you need a PRC (provisional replacement certificate).
Source....Simon Calder from The Independent.
So, from what LITTLE information there is, it will replace BUT DO THE SAME as an EHIC. The GLOBAL part will be limited to those nations we can agree a reciprocal STATE FUNDED medical agreement deal with. Time frame for when they do become available is yet to be decided/confirmed.
As/when/if more info comes available I am sure our global colleagues will be more than happy to let us all know. |

Its the same . . .
The EU says: “If the need arises, you will still receive the treatment necessary to enable you to continue your holiday without having to return home for treatment.”
If you have an existing Ehic, it will continue to be valid until its expiry date. If yours has run out, or you never had one, you are still entitled to care.
For treatment abroad, you are required to apply for a provisional replacement certificate (PRC). This is confirmation by the NHS that you are entitled to health care. |
