Why was European trade declining even before COVID?

In 2019:

“Exports and imports declined across all major EU economies, with falls of 3.6 per cent and 1.7 per cent respectively in France, and of 0.4 per cent and 1.8 per cent in Germany. In Italy trade dropped for the sixth straight quarter: exports decreased 1.2 per cent and imports slipped 1 per cent.

This was a more severe contraction than the overall 0.7 per cent fall in exports across the G20 group of major economies, which account for about 85 per cent of world output. G20 imports dropped 0.9 per cent in the same period.”

We’re we lied to about how great the EU was as a trading block? Seems like it. Has corruption finished Brussels?

Uk trade with the eu has been falling for years

2002 54%

2019 43%

Thats a 11% drop in 17 years another reason to branch out on our own rather than be stuck in a shrinking market.

You must be trolling. If you genuinely wanted to learn about how economics and international trade worked within the EU, you wouldn't really be coming to a swinging forum as your first port of call. Would you?

This is extremely easy to answer, The G20 contains big less developed economies such as India and China they are obviously growing at a greater pace than the economies in the EU that have been developed for years.

I found where you copied and pasted this article from and you failed to put something in:

"In the UK, exports contracted sharply as a result of Brexit uncertainty and the fall in the value of sterling against the dollar. "

The Source was:

Valentina Romei in London November 28 2019 FT you should really mention where you are quoting from!

Also, the way you keep banging on about corruption is laughable given the current government comprised of Brexiteers is the most corrupt I've ever seen.

Given how badly they have handled the covid crisis why do you have so much faith in them?

Probably just the inevitable consequence of all EU nations being more dependent than ever on Chinese goods. We have exported jobs East.

North Italy used to be a power house of manufacturing , with few exceptions, all gone!

One small example, pretty much all car brake discs are made in China, they may say ‘engineered in Germany’ or ‘solutions made in Germany’ , ‘UK engineering’, but they are made in China.

We are awash with Chinese products. There is an impact.

This is extremely easy to answer, The G20 contains big less developed economies such as India and China they are obviously growing at a greater pace than the economies in the EU that have been developed for years.

I found where you copied and pasted this article from and you failed to put something in:

"In the UK, exports contracted sharply as a result of Brexit uncertainty and the fall in the value of sterling against the dollar. "

The Source was:

Valentina Romei in London November 28 2019 FT you should really mention where you are quoting from!

Brexit uncertainty caused by Remoaners

Just all try pulling in the same direction

And I’ve never seen you quote a single source, glass houses etc

It just goes to show and angry and confused people are easier to con.

No wonder leave won the vote so easily."

I thought it was tight?

"How many deaths has the eu overall compared to the uk?

Work it out!is it higher or lower? good game good game.

If you work it out we'll seeI leave you to as i have stuff to get on with, you seem to have time on your hands.

Are you bad at maths too?

Average death rate of the EU 27 per 1 million is: 807, UK is 1,275 so significantly higher.

Figures taken from:worldometers

Worldometers currently shows the UK at 946 per million.

Ok, I make the (corrected) EU 27 Average deaths per 1m: 581, and the UKs: 946.

Current EU members Death/1M population.

Belgium - 1555

Italy - 1076

Spain - 1027

Slovenia - 1013

Uk - 946

Taken from Worldometers"

Thats not the EU as a whole which is what Costas asked for. Why have You only included the higher Countires?

Could it be that the other 23 are lower?

I suppose I mean relatively easy considering the majority of voters were convinced to vote for something which has no benefit to them, and a will make them poorer, have less rights, etc.

Yes they are lower I'm not disputing that.

I'm highlighting the numbers by country.

Some people took great delight earlier in the year saying the UK had the worse death rate in the EU and Europe (even though that was not true).

So overall in Europe the UK currently has the 9th worse death rate per million in Europe and 5th against current EU members.

I mean this could easily change in the future when excess mortality is taken into account, I'm not celebrating the UKs death rate I'm highlighting the governments incompetence that led to it. We have several advantages over most of Europe in terms of time and being an island with the pandemic yet we have been one of if not the worst hit.

"Uk trade with the eu has been falling for years

2002 54%

2019 43%

Thats a 11% drop in 17 years another reason to branch out on our own rather than be stuck in a shrinking market."

So if them figures are correct that 43% of UK trade is with the EU, that's a large amount of trade to have tarrifs applied to.

Do you think that would have dier consequences economically or we'd be better off financially ?

If we are free from the shackles of the eu we will be gradually reducing trade with them as we increase it with the rest of the world.Everyone knows you cant have the same terms as members so no the deal will be worse but the overall position for the future in my opinion will be better. As my old dad used to say you cant make an omelette without breaking eggs.

That's more to do with ex eastern blocks joining where low wages made it more economic to build and buy things from there. The whole equality argument falls flat as some countries have a big advantage with far lower wage costs.

As has previously stated the market has expanded but only half of the figures have been supplied here.

Looks like a maths lesson is required

If you have a market that is for 100 items and you supply 10 of them that is 10% of that market.

However if that market expands to 110 items and you still only supply 10 of them that now 9.09% of that market.

Percentage mean nothing on their own.

Your percentage share shrinks in an expanding market if your growth remains static but that doesn’t mean your economic income shrinks.

You need more than just headline figures to establish the how an economy is truly functioning

Someone's already said they believe we'd be better off having tarrifs applied.
