So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

The eu has ploughed millions into liverpool and other areas.

If people think that boris and his Chums would do they same, they should seek help.

I also think being part of one of the biggest economies in the world, would have its own advantages.

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

They actually did a lot for us through the European regeneration and development fund.... and places like the south west, wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and north east England were all net beneficiaries to the EU because of what came back....

And before you use the “well it was our money” argument ... I didn’t see our government dipped their money in....

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

Why do you include Brussels? Seems odd!

Free access to nearly 500 million people, working time directive, ease of movement to our nearest neighbours, increased investment in the UK leading to an increase in GDP, investment in deprived areas such as South Wales and the North East, banned roaming charges when on holiday, simplified trading with EU companies, set certified standards that make trading easier and it easier for consumers to have confidence, made sharing information on security issues easier.

But you can also look up what they have done for you area on the myeu.uk site if you want to know for your local area.

They made 'union only jobs' illegal which was a good thing. Now you can't force an employees to join the union.

But to be fair that isn't much considering they undermined the entire concept of democracy.

Because you don’t understand how the EU works does not make it in democratic.

Council of Ministers, European Parliament (MEP’S) European Commissioner are all elected with by direct or indirectly

House of Lords on the other hand and is an unelected body ....

I wonder where the democratic deficit is....

The Japan trade deal is thought to favour Japan 83% and tie us to tighter state aid rules than the EU are asking for, so maybe we should have taken a bit more time.

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

Why choose a tiny tiny area of the EU to specifically ask about what "they" did for us other than to use it as a loaded question.

The benefits of EU membership has been explained and backed up with the facts over and over and over again since 2016, which unfortunately cannot be said of the merits of leaving and the facts to back that side of the argument up

You were conned mate, which Brexiteer ran on a no deal platform?

what does that even mean? Do you think it was like voting for an MP? "

So, it was ok to not have a plan for Brexit?

"I think we may have stumbled upon why brexiteers hate the eu so much.

They plough money into area which need them.

Ideas anathema to boris and his ilk.Wasnt it Michael Heseltine maggies minister who rejuvenated liverpool? i seem to remember Liverpool giving him freedom of the city.

He disagreed with Thatcher approach.

He didnt rejunecate the city.(how could he?)

That was the objective 1 money

You are so anti tory you just cant bring yourself to give him credit for anything. I find it sad that you are so filled with hate that you cannot even acknowledge what he did for your city. Luckily your way of thinking is very much in decline and people now are much more likely to give credit where its due. just like the labour mayor who gave him the freedom of the city.

You are utterly clueless

Where the fuck did I not acknowledge him?

He was secretary of state..how the fuck can e regenerate a city?

Just because you have some irrational bizarre hatred of the eu doesn't mean everyone has.He argued the case with the government and won thats how it generally works in our political system. "

I have posted actual facts and figures.

You just chat shit as usual.

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?

They actually did a lot for us through the European regeneration and development fund.... and places like the south west, wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and north east England were all net beneficiaries to the EU because of what came back....

And before you use the “well it was our money” argument ... I didn’t see our government dipped their money in....

Well they could have if they hadn't been giving it to the eu in the 1st place for them to give a little back and they say brxiteers were fooled."

Many "brexiteers" cannot even get their own ducks in a row when it comes to debating "Brexity" topics

This one doesn't get the light shone on it much but the UK was against a raft of disability, gender and equality acts that the EU passed through and what now helps millions of people.

Ah, here we go again with ‘facts’

Neither areas nor individuals pay monies directly to the EU. All UK taxes are paid to the UK Government which in turn makes its contribution to the EU. The EU then returns some of this money to fund certain schemes, the likes of which you mention. So in fact, it could be argued that monies raised from other areas of the UK are actually funding such schemes.

It's not really a point though is it? I mean unless you could explicitly prove the government would spend it on deprived areas anyway. Wales’ net benefit from the EU equated to around £79 per head in 2014. This compares with a net contribution of £151 per head for the UK as a whole. So Wales makes money from the EU, England is more difficult to breakdown with place live London receiving very little money from the EU while Liverpool be benefiting in the same way as Wales.

It's not really a point though is it? I mean unless you could explicitly prove the government would spend it on deprived areas anyway. Given David Cameron's answer to Nick Thomas-Symonds who asked if the Prime Minister agreed that if his constituency "loses a penny piece of its funding under his successor, that would be a gross betrayal". I would not be to hopeful of that.

Think this disproves that theory quite conclusively

"Cornwall could be "significantly worse off" after Brexit, receiving just 5% of what it needs to replace EU funding, according to a local councillor.

One of the UK's poorest areas, Cornwall has applied for £700m over 10 years from the government to replace EU cash.

However, there are fears that the county could get as little as £1.8m in the first year.

The government said it would work with "councils and other key stakeholders on how best to use" money it provided."

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

It's absolutely mind boggling than even after all this time. People still haven't bothered to learn what the EU is, how it works, and how it used to benefit the UK.

Try here for a start on the basics.

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

On a personal level it gave my me and my kids the right to travel, work, live anywhere in the EU. It’s frustrating to have that taken away.

It enabled me to trade easily across the member states, something that I enjoyed doing for many years.

Apparently only 5% of what they received from the EU.

Awful for the Cornish people who didn't vote for brexit and who are stuck dealing with the aftermath.

"Wales’ net benefit from the EU equated to around £79 per head in 2014. This compares with a net contribution of £151 per head for the UK as a whole. So Wales makes money from the EU, England is more difficult to breakdown with place live London receiving very little money from the EU while Liverpool be benefiting in the same way as Wales.

One of the intentions,I think of the eu,is to look at areas which have been left behind, and to "level them up'

"

I agree many part of the U.K. have been class as Stage 1 areas as they are classed as Economically deprived areas.

Funny how after the referendum vote Nigel Farage was at the German embassy obtaining German citizenship for his children.

Clearly wants his children to have the benefits and opportunities of being a EU citizen but happily deny to the rest of us.

Chorley,

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?

Why do you include Brussels? Seems odd!

Free access to nearly 500 million people, working time directive, ease of movement to our nearest neighbours, increased investment in the UK leading to an increase in GDP, investment in deprived areas such as South Wales and the North East, banned roaming charges when on holiday, simplified trading with EU companies, set certified standards that make trading easier and it easier for consumers to have confidence, made sharing information on security issues easier.

But you can also look up what they have done for you area on the myeu.uk site if you want to know for your local area."

Well said all good comes from being in the EU. Can't see any downsides. But we are going to find out the downsides soon due to brexiters.

An EU benefit - the ERASMUS scheme. British students could go to a European University for a year.

EU rules on environmental standards have generally pushed national governments to improve areas like water and air quality. Although we still need to do a lot more, it is largely the threat of infraction proceedings in the European Court which has made governments act. I am really not convinced UK gov. will not start trying to reduce environmental protections after Brexit.

Any student already there can't come home for Christmas as they won't be let back in with no EHIC card and needing to be there more than 90 days out of 180.

They just keep coming.

Funny after 3 years, when asked the same questions, brexiteers struggle to come up with one bona fida bonus.

Reducing environmental protections is one of the cornerstones of brexit.

"Unless you are a wealthy landowner or a company that seeks to use cheap labour, not a lot

That airbus factory up the road.... eu money

That airport in Liverpool just up the road.... eu money

That lovely metro link in Manchester just up the road.... eu money cant you get it into your head it was uk money they took and gave a bit back. When has the uk ever not been a net contributor ?

I cannot believe people still keep coming out with stuff like this And they say we were conned.

Sometimes you just can’t reason with stupid... but let me try slowly.. one last time for the wilfully ignorant

this is what is called ignorance of the facts... let me explain

Because of poverty levels in parts of the uk... they were entitled to more regeneration money

Devon and Cornwall were in tier 1, South Wales was in tier 1, Scotland.. tier 1, Northern Ireland... tier 1, north east England.. tier1, rest of Wales... tier 2, north west England... tier 2, West Midlands.... tier 2

Because of this...ALL these regions ended up being net beneficiaries of EU money.... all the people in these regions ended up getting back more money from the eu than they ever put in....True you cant argue with stupid no matter how you dress it up show me a year since we have been in the eu when the uk was not a net contributor.

Put it this way you give me £100 and i will give your wife £50 yes she is a net beneficiary by £50 quid its not cost me anything but you as a family are still down £50 Im sorry i cant put it any simpler for you.

I dont understand.

Are you agreeing with Fabio there?you obviously dont understand

Well you said you said true you cant argue with stupid (which implies you agree with him)

But then your point about putting in more than you get out completely contradicts his point

'All these regions end up getting more money than they put in?(Fabio)

.'and you are still down £50'(you)try reading it again dummy im the eu _abio is the uk and his wife is cornwall.ffs i cant make it any clearer.

"Were did they get the money from"

So I think today this thread has established that the total benefit of being in the EU was

1) We gave Brussels £18 billion a year, they gave us back £9 billion and told us what to spend it on

2) Er

What was the second benefit again?

I have you a link which explains some of the benefits of EU membership.

Otherwise there is a huge array of benefits for being in the EU. Have you not been paying attention to everything that's being lost over the past four years through brexit, do you genuinely not understand what's going on?

They plough money into area which need them.

Ideas anathema to boris and his ilk.Wasnt it Michael Heseltine maggies minister who rejuvenated liverpool? i seem to remember Liverpool giving him freedom of the city.

He disagreed with Thatcher approach.

He didnt rejunecate the city.(how could he?)

That was the objective 1 money

You are so anti tory you just cant bring yourself to give him credit for anything. I find it sad that you are so filled with hate that you cannot even acknowledge what he did for your city. Luckily your way of thinking is very much in decline and people now are much more likely to give credit where its due. just like the labour mayor who gave him the freedom of the city."

I remember reading a piece a while ago which said some parts of the UK were on a par with some of the poorest in europe,in terms of life expectancy.

Yet in London you have houses costing millions and ostentatious wealth.

Considering this inequality has been there for decades, and is widening, and to say 'well the gmnt would have made the difference,if not for the eu.'has no basis in fact or reality whatsoever.

Great reply, are you standing for a party then? I just can't see how you can back a system that can return an outright winner with less votes than the runner up.

"Cornwall got funding from the eu

They voted for Brexit and boris told them, they would get the same money from central gmnt

Staggeringly he wasnt be completely honest.

They are getting much less.

Apparently only 5% of what they received from the EU.

Awful for the Cornish people who didn't vote for brexit and who are stuck dealing with the aftermath.

The beauty of democracy is that if you think it’s unfair, you can vote in a different UK government

Is it though? I've voted in every UK election since I could and my votes counted for nothing, at least in the EU election my vote actually counted.

So you haven’t managed to convince enough people of your arguments then. Maybe.... because it’s a weak argument?

What is that even meant to mean? I'm pointing out to you that the first past the post system isn't as democratic a system as you think and you reply like that?

Ah right, you don’t like first pass the post.

Simple, just campaign for the Liberal Democrat’s and you can have PR

I'm finding it hard to understand you are you implying I'm a politician?

Do you think the first past the post system is fit for purpose?

Oh right sorry, thought you knew everything

Well you could have PR like Albania or Italy

You've also failed to reference other counties that use PR successfully 89 counties use it you picked out two.

How would a different government be able to get EU funding back for Cornwall?

Have you not been paying attention? EU money for Cornwall doesn’t come from a magic money tree.

We pay in 18 billion, they give us back 9 billion and tell us where to spend it. What a deal lol.

Maybe If the gmnt wasnt so utter corrupt and actually treated every area fairly, as opposed to its core base, they wouldn't have too.

No one is complaining about what the EU have done here."

But what is their core base now? The red wall seem to have realised that Labour no longer speaks for them or represents them and as long as they support Labour nothing improves for them. Now that they have elected the Tories maybe they will reap the benefits and the Tories will reward them and expand their 'core base'

Oops not Italy unless you want weak and wobbly government. I’m not fully up to speed with Albania tbh.

All I’m saying is if like most Remoaners if you think you can do better, put yourself up for election.

Or are you just a critic on the sidelines unwilling to get in the arena.

Great reply, are you standing for a party then? I just can't see how you can back a system that can return an outright winner with less votes than the runner up.

At the moment I have put my political ambitions on hold seeing as the Brexit argument has been won. You will be the first to know if I decide to stand for election in future however.

So, you keep on bringing up 'democracy' but you are quite happy with a system where the party with the majority of votes can loose and a massive proportion of the votes don't count?

Once again, you can’t propose anything better, you just moan.

As Churchill said, it’s the worst possible voting system, apart from all those other ones.

And you got the quote wrong too!

He was on about democracy not the FPTP system, but well done for trying to bastardise it."

Seeing as Britain was still FPTP the meaning of the quote was correct.

Go on, humour me, just make one positive suggestion

Why alter the quote then?

How would a different government be able to get EU funding back for Cornwall?

Have you not been paying attention? EU money for Cornwall doesn’t come from a magic money tree.

We pay in 18 billion, they give us back 9 billion and tell us where to spend it. What a deal lol."

Okay so you don't understand what the money we pay into the EU goes towards and what it buys us into.

How would a different government get this money back to Cornwall? You seem to think a different government can do this.

Access to trade freely within the EU is worth more to the UK economy than we pay in.

It's mind boggling how poor some people's understanding of the situation is.

I wouldn't bother trying to argue that point with this user, even though it's obviously true looking at any analysis, they'll tell you economist are in the pocket of those who pay or something similar.

This is when they're not making up quote and attributing them to ex PMs

Tariffs or no tariffs is a zero sum game. No country would impose tariffs otherwise. That’s why the EU is a rapidly declining market, there’s no net trading advantage and when you couple that with zero reform you get the end of the Empire.

I think you inadvertently highlight an interesting point about the role the media played in the referendum.

Assuming your level of misunderstanding is relatively common among brexiteers.

What's interesting is, to see that you still believe the rhetoric from 2016 leaver campaigns, and the right wing media, which has all since been debunked a million times over.

"So, genuine question, what did the EU, specifically Brussels, do for us?"

What did you do to take advantage of the opportunities that EU Membership offered you? Did you take advantage of seamless import and export opportunities? Did you or your kids educate themselves or work in the EU without let or hinderance?

The answer to your question is actually in your question. Millions of people in this country were so disenfranchised by our own political system here in the U.K., that EU opportunities may as well have been Martian benefits.

Being at the heart of the Eu and influencing its direction was an inherently good thing and was recognised as such by prior Conservative Governments. Sadly, they subsequently fucked over the population so badly that anything outside the here and now for millions of Brits seemed irrelevant.
