A target only means something if there is an intention to attain it. Unfortunately every single announcement that has come out of bojo's lips so far in his entire career has been utter bollocks and outright lies.

The target is impossible because we cannot generate enough power.Producing this power in such a short time we cannot afford

We are already leading the way on this and its something to be proud of as a nation. If we can meet the new target announced then its great for the whole world but even if we don't make it at least we are trying which is far more than many other far richer nations are doing.

The Tories have announced this kind of thing before. Usually before an election. Only to scrap all their plans.

Will wait and see what happens.

It’s easy to make plans when you know you won’t be responsible for implementing them,

"By looks of most of the pessimistic comments in this thread I guess its not worth trying."

Why would they? People vote Tory no matter what.

It would be great if they went ahead with this new carbon commitment.

But they've said it before. And done fuck all.

Have you cut your carbon foot print ? Do you walk or cycle to work, have you stopped flying, do you wear more clothes in winter rather than use central heating, do you buy only locally produced food or are you like Greta and packham et al tell the whole world how bad they are while flying round it to eco conferences.

UK emissions have fallen by 28% over the last 10 years. Who has been in government for the last 10 years?

Maybe you should check up on some facts and figures and then you will see that this country has done a tremendous amount in the last 20 yrs, far more than many other far richer nations, so I am afraid you are wrong when you say they have done fuck all. Also as far I am concerned it doesn't matter if you are Labour or Tory or anyone else for that matter, climate change affects the entire planet not just Tory voters, climate change doesn't give a toss about politics.

yeah fuck it lets not bother because said it. i bet if Greta had proposed it they would all be singing her praises.

I do find it strange that people can be so bias that they will go against what they believe in because the opposition has suggested it, or is it they are just negative thinking people ive not made my mind up.

"I am all for theories about climate change, and would not for a moment dispute the wisdom or good intentions of the vast majority of scientists. But I am also an empiricist; and I observe that something appears to be up with our winter weather, and to call it "warming" is obviously to strain the language. I see from the BBC website that there are scientists who say that "global warming" is indeed the cause of the cold and snowy winters we seem to be having. A team of Americans and Chinese experts have postulated that the melting of the Arctic ice means that the whole North Atlantic is being chilled as the floes start to break off — like a Martini refrigerated by ice cubes. I do not have the expertise to comment on the Martini theory; I merely observe that there are at least some other reputable scientists who say that it is complete tosh, or at least that there is no evidence to support it."

Hats off to him for looking at both sides of the argument and admitting he does not have the expertise and was keeping an open mind.

Of course it is worth trying but when you have a serial liar like Boris making promises it tends to get ignored

A lot of the UKs carbon emissions have been offshored, particularly to China, as our manufacturing capacity has declined and service companies grown:

https://ourworldindata.org/consumption-based-co2

Current estimate is that our total carbon footprint is about double what is emitted from the UK landmass alone, when net imported goods are included.

Also bear in mind that while the UK has been increasing its green energy generating capacity substantially, China expanded its coal fired power station capacity enormously over the last ten years. In 2014 alone China approved 214 coal power stations:
