They seem to be getting their ducks lined up ahead of the news breaking in Germany about Nissan winding down its investment in Sunderland.
“We don’t need Japanese Companies making cars in this country anyway. Brexit is the chance to make real British cars again.” |

“Nissan has dismissed claims that it is to close its Sunderland plant with the loss of around 7,000 jobs. Reports on social media have quoted a German automotive magazine which has claimed an un-named manager at the firm has said the factory is facing the axe.
The reports say the source’s comments translate as ‘Nissan plans to close its Sunderland plant....A decision has been made and it’s not favourable for the UK’.
Nissan tonight have dismissed the reports.”
Rumour started in a German automotive magazine .....

"Sad thing is, some people in this country would be happy if it was true "
You should pick your friends more carefully as if that's the case ..
Throughout the build up to the referendum and since there have been strong views on both sides but no one has actually said they would think it a good idea if such a thing we're to happen..
No one..
What has happened as you have done is a pathetic attempt to suggest those who think brexit is not a good idea, think that way..
It's puerile ..
We all want the best for our country we just differ on the direction of travel..

As far as I can tell, the OP voted against this kind of thing. How are they more in favour of it, than people who voted for it?
Bizarre. |

I'm not who you are referring to, but I'm from Bristol and I would love to see Brexit fail and brexiteers get the comeuppance.
Note: I want to see *brexit* fail, not the *country* fail. I want my country and its citizens to be prosperous and successful. But as we are seeing Brexit is the opposite of that.
Those that are still clinging to the notion that Brexit is a good idea after all this shit-show so far, expense and squandered political capital... frankly deserve ridicule. One by one, every ludicrous reason they had is being shown to be nonsense. And yet still they persist.

Sadly, we will never know. As both are a catastrophic failure for the country.
As "project fear" predicted back in 2016. |

The effect of Covid and the switch away from the ICE to EV has more of an impact on any car plant than Brexit ever will.
The game has changed so in reality we will never know if Brexit was good or bad for manufacturing. Germany has for many years invested in plants outside of Germany for cheaper labour. I know some people in Hungary that resent being used as cheap labour. My TT was built in Hungary.
The Ford plant in Dagenham must be under threat (2000 jobs) as they only produce engines there now.
We should be protesting about the switch away from petrol / diesel as this will usher in the end of affordable motoring for the masses, driving will once again become the preserve of the wealthy. |

On a basic level, Brexit was a success.
A. It's happened.
B. US corporations are negotiating into the UK market.
C. Tax avoidance schemes can continue.
D. Currency traders made a shit load of money.
Some other aspects are still TBC. Such as the erosion of workers rights and environmental protections etc.
So by and large the aims were achieved.
So brexit was a success and the UK suffering is of no consequence to those who organised and funded brexit.

No..
Brexit is not the whole of the UK economy, many companies having seen the potential for this vanity project going pear shaped have in the last few years indemnified their businesses ..

How do you define the ‘country ‘ ? The problem with Brexit is that it means different things to different people, it all depends on what you were hoping for when you voted to leave . |

Seems to have gone a bit off track as usual matt says he wants brexit to fail so the brexiteers get their comeuppance, as the majority of the country voted for brexit that cannot happen without the country failing in my opinion so convince me otherwise this is what forums are for. |

"Sad thing is, some people in this country would be happy if it was true
You should pick your friends more carefully as if that's the case ..
Throughout the build up to the referendum and since there have been strong views on both sides but no one has actually said they would think it a good idea if such a thing we're to happen..
No one..
What has happened as you have done is a pathetic attempt to suggest those who think brexit is not a good idea, think that way..
It's puerile ..
We all want the best for our country we just differ on the direction of travel..
Really? Don't kid yourself. What was the opening post all about? Certainly not Facebook that's for sure. The op would like nothing more than to see the 'uneducated little Englanders' suffer. Nissan workers included. And if he is man enough he'll admit it "
The opening post was about Brexiters getting their excuses ahead of events. The great irony is that Nissan have distanced themselves from the story whilst other commentators have pointed out that tariff announcement is exactly what Nissan warned about in 2015.
Nonetheless - that is not the point. The point is the Brexiters look to spin everything in ever more ridiculous circumstances.
We saw it with the two-faced celebrations of big wins that were actually continuation deals with countries on the other side of the world whilst simultaneously arguing that a no deal with our closest trading neighbours is a good thing.
Brexiters would not get so derided if they didn’t come out with such utter nonsense.
No-one can defend the imposition of 10% tariffs on cars when “Project Fear” pointed out that this would be the logical outcome. Remember that all leading Brexiteers were ridiculing any kind of tariff and championing the slogan of “no downsides to Brexit. Only considerable upsides.”
It would just be helpful all round if the spin would stop and allow pragmatic realism to take over. |

What has happened as you have done is a pathetic attempt to suggest those who think brexit is not a good idea, think that way..

Really? Don't kid yourself. What was the opening post all about? Certainly not Facebook that's for sure. The op would like nothing more than to see the 'uneducated little Englanders' suffer. Nissan workers included. And if he is man enough he'll admit it
The opening post was about Brexiters getting their excuses ahead of events.
It would just be helpful all round if the spin would stop and allow pragmatic realism to take over.Dont tariffs work both ways? i see a lot more bmw,s audi,s,vw,s renaults etc on the roads round here than nissans.

How do “tariffs working both ways” help Nissan?
Mrs Thatcher and John Major facilitated the Nissan plant (and others) by evolving the existing Customs Union into something better. It was called The Single Market and it was conceived by Mr Thatcher as a means of attracting inward investment into the U.K. as the country with seamless access into the whole of Europe.
That is why Nissan is where it is today. It is a direct consequence of the Single Market.
The U.K. applying import tariffs on BMW’s and Mercedes mean nothing to Nissan as it is their vehicles that are being exported into Europe from this side.
It is inevitable that this will cause casualties but I don’t think it will be catastrophic, cliff edge stuff. Just a dwindling of major investments into the U.K. and a gradual winding down.
Still the people of Sunderland could learn ballet dancing. |

Just for you...
“Not all Brexit voters are racists, but all the racists voted for Brexit.”
Interestingly, statista.com released a survey in June this year which indicated that 44% of people in this country believe that the country is “quite racist” and another 8% believe the country is “very racist.”
Fancy the coincidence of 52% of the surveyed group thought that the country is racist to some degree!

I have only ever said that not all Brexit voters were racists but all racists voted for Brexit.
In the heated months after June 2016 many Brexiters were all so very snowflakey about their Brexit motives and hence for some, their mask slipped.
Then of course there were the oiks, riff-raff and chavs - I mean what can be said about them? |

If anyone voted leave they would not be your friends because you chose teamwork and not isolation and exceptionalism? Can you not see the flaw in your argument there? You have isolated yourself from half the country and somehow consider yourself superior. In that statement alone you have placed yourself beneath any chav or oik as you describe them. What a sad sorry mindset |

but that’s not what you were saying before tho mate have you found out some of yr family or friends voted leave so you have changed yr opinion the one thing I respected about you before was you were a man with balls who spoke his mind. What happened to you ?
None of my friends voted Leave. If they did they would not be my friends.
I choose teamwork, inclusion and social mobility over isolation, Exceptionalism and reduced horizons.
You know the expression about “Birds of a feather.”
What a sad sorry mindset "

And if he is man enough he'll admit it but he ain’t man enough tho he’s been spouting shite for yrs about brexit just wait the racist shit be next
Just for you...
“Not all Brexit voters are racists, but all the racists voted for Brexit.”

Thanks . Anyway, I have plenty of friends, some even voted remain, shock horror, but I haven't a clue which way most of them voted, it's not really something we discuss but to isolate yourself from people with a different point of view is ridiculous and never solves anything. I hope the guy is happy with his open tolerant Broad horizons, but I doubt it |
