"our island is surrounded by fish but we export a lot of what we catch and buy it in from the EU?
now where is that face palm emoji
"
We buy most of the fish we eat from Iceland .
A lot of the fish we catch in near and middle water we don’t eat in the U.K. so that’s exported .
So unless we start eating mackerel a lot more it looks like nothing will change .

" yes a lot of cod from Iceland because French boats catch 80% of cod from English waters. |

Not challenging your figures as you may be right. But the numbers are small in comparison to imported cod from Iceland and Norway.
Cod is a deep water fish and whilst it was caught in smaller numbers in the North Sea years ago it is moving further north due to warming seas not over fishing.
The big Cod shoals are in the Atlantic off our west coast and off Iceland.
U.K. ships are generally smaller than their European counterparts and would be unlikely to fish far off our west coast.
The French ships are generally bigger and more powerful so would fish deeper waters for cod.
The U.K. large trawling fleets disappeared due to the “COD Wars” with Iceland.
The rest of the U.K. fleet is mostly inshore or middle water boats that go for sole or mackerel etc to export .
The most valuable catches for the smaller U.K. fishermen are Crabs, scallops etc as they sell well in the U.K. and abroad.
The U.K. caught around 600k tons of fish in our waters and around 100k tons in other EU countries waters the year before last.
So unless we start building a brand new fleet of big ships we will still be importing those cod. Or not. As the case may be.
Either way I don’t think we will be catching it! |
