Boris, with no trace of irony, thinks it was increasing democracy in Scotland.
But was it, though? How about the Iraq War? Or PPI? Power-sharing in Northern Ireland (if you're not keen on it), maybe?
Blair made plenty - but was giving a few million people the means by which to determine who governs them, even in a limited way, so very wrong?
Is that not what Boris wants the people of Hong Kong to be able to do? To choose how their part of a larger country is governed? I say country because the Tories regard the UK as a country; in much the same way the CCP regard Hong Kong as their territory.
As for the childish insistence on the "once in a generation" remarks made by the SNP, in 2014, as binding - it's usually made by Tories who have made it plain they are quite content to break international law, by not honouring an actual treaty they signed on behalf of HMQ. I suppose they feel that breaking your word, especially if it were never formalised in any way, is a far clearer indication that you can't be trusted, than reneging on a legally binding document.
Boris, in his utter ineptitude, reminds me of Richter, in 'Total Recall'. To paraphrase:
HMQ: "Prime Minister, do you know why I'm such a happy person?"
Boris : "No, your majesty."
HMQ: "Because I have one of the greatest jobs in the world. As long as Scotland stays part of the UK, I can do anything I want. In fact, the only thing I worry about is, one day, if the SNP win, and Scotland leaves, my realm will be diminished.

IF it happens, Boris - and it's still a big if - you don't get to blame Tony.

I think giving powers to Scotland is ok but they abuse it.They abuse there power getting to much money and wasting it.
Why can they interfere in English,Welsh or N Ireland decisions they have no right to act the way they do in Westminster.
The SNP is a discrace I am sure if Blair had forseen this he would never have granted them the powers he did.
We should have more control over the cash we give them the SNP should be called to account.

If you dislike devolution so much, it’s probably fantastic. And it is! The Scots vote for the SNP for a reason. And it’s called democracy. What Boris thinks, they couldn’t care less.
They’ve also had to put up with countless Tory PMs despitenever voting conservative.
The tories wouldn’t have to whinge about devolution if they hadn’t pissed off the Scots with the poll tax. They’ve never recovered in Scotland.

Part of this is correct  devolved power is not the disaster, the disaster is the power being controlled by a nationalist party who have only one objective.
Blair didn’t factor in the SNP becoming so powerful - he could only see Labour being the dominant force in Scottish politics.

In 2020 the latest IPSOS Mori poll was : Yes 55%
No: 39%.
Devolution started in 1999. Until 2010, the SNP and the desire for Independence were not that strong. Funnily enough, it is since the Torres got in charge that the support for independence has grown. So it has nothing to do with devolution itself but the Tories. But as always, these incompetent charlatans always have somebody else to blame.

Yes to independence 39%. No 53% , don’t know 8%
In 2020 the latest IPSOS Mori poll was : Yes 55%
No: 39%.
Devolution started in 1999. Until 2010, the SNP and the desire for Independence were not that strong. Funnily enough, it is since the Torres got in charge that the support for independence has grown. So it has nothing to do with devolution itself but the Tories. But as always, these incompetent charlatans always have somebody else to blame. |

The geographic nature of Scotland makes it more expensive to run. Scotland is over 500x bigger than the wirral but only about 7x the population. There is 46x more miles of road in Scotland than the wirral making it far more expensive to maintain per head.

Part of this is correct. Blair was utterly convinced Labour could take Scotland for granted and that the SNP could never achieve dominance in a PR Parliament, designed to deny them (or any Party) that level of power - particularly in opposition to Westminster.
Where you are incorrect is to suggest - even indirectly - that people voting for the party they want to govern them is disastrous.
Incidentally, the SNP have formed a minority government in 3 out of 4 of the last Scottish Parliaments. They do not have all the power or all the control. They have whatever mandate the voters of Scotland are prepared to give them.
And are we to believe that English nationalism, of the sort that gave us Brexit, is the only legitimate kind? Or is it not nationalism if you wrap yourself in a Union Flag - but it is if you use a Saltire?
If leaving the EU is ok because you want to take back control, what's so bad about wanting to leave the UK, in order to do the same?
In any case, Devolution is here to stay. That is going to mean that the majority of MSPs will always oppose any Tory Government in Westminster; and the likelihood of a UK Tory Government is always going to be high - because that's the way FPTP works and the English - Labour and Tory - seem to like it that way.
The truth is, if the Tories gave a shit about the people of Scotland, they'd make more of an effort to win our votes - but they can't be arsed. It's the other side of the coin to Labour taking the Scots for granted.
And here we are. Neither of them have learned a fucking thing in over 13 years. |

I don't know. I'll concede that it probably wouldn't have been any better.
Although, for sure, Jeremy wouldn't have taken the opportunity of a pandemic to line his friends' pockets with taxpayers' money.
It's also highly unlikely a footballer would have had to twist his arm to get him to make sure disadvantaged children didn't go hungry.

You are from the north west of England. Scotland contributes more per head to the exchequer than NW England...
The geographic nature of Scotland makes it more expensive to run. Scotland is over 500x bigger than the wirral but only about 7x the population. There is 46x more miles of road in Scotland than the wirral making it far more expensive to maintain per head.

The geographic nature of the NorthEast and the North west makes them more expensive to run too but per person they gat a fraction of the money handed over to the South East per person. That’s fact not a rumour as it’s government policy.
Scotland gets more money per person than the whole of the U.K. with the exception of the south east.
So yes you do pay in but you get more out too. Devolution is fine it’s the nightmare of the Parliamentbin a London that had driven the Scottish electorate to the SNP.
Personally I think they are not that great in running Scotland and win votes from loyalty to the cause rather than ability.

They ARE called to account- at every election. Funnily enough, they keep winning so perhaps the reality contradicts your view..
There is the tiniest flaw in your thinking about one part of the UK contributing to the coffers then another part deciding not to give it back. No wonder support for Scottish independence has never been so strong. |
