At what point do you look at this government & its almost perpetual state of failure & think to yourself that voting for Boris et al may have been a bad idea?

Emma, do you realise the Tories are the ones who have been in power for a decade? As such, they're the ones who are fucking things up for us all.

When people are unable to even imagine a better society and a better situation for themselves. You know that the Tory party propaganda has been utterly successful.

"But, but ... Gordon Brown bankrupted the country ... and Jeremy Corbyn would have been much worse. "

And Sadiq Khan is making a terrible job of being Mayor.

Then there was Diane Abbott's car crash interviews and the Anit Semitic scandals in the party.

I didn't vote Tory but I couldn't justify voting Labour either. So I just wrote "None of the Below" on the voting slip.

When it comes to voting you look at the choices in front of you and decide who you think would be better.

With an 80 seat Conservative majority and Labours worst result since the 1930's it would appear a lot of people just didn't want what Labour had to offer.

You’re right. People wanted a party that prorogued parliament illegally, a pm who lied to the queen, a party that would top the table of Covid deaths, a gvt that keeps making u turns, a gvt that grants contracts without tender, a pm who is the mouthpiece of an unelected democrat and a gvt that talks up the U.K. all the time but who fails in every world beating thing they attempt. Life’s great with this conservative gvt.

I think we can safely say that such a notion is nothing short of a fallacy when the current government are propped up by media conglomerates who write the script for them.

Well, it is possible of course, but to get to the next election the Tories have to negotiate not only this pandemic, but Brexit as well. They'd better start pulling their socks up before long, because on their current performance they'll be lucky to beat the Lib Dems.

Obviously not. But as you know you don't vote for the Prime Minister you vote for your local MP. And as you also know the PM doesn't run the country single handed, so as representatives of the potential government at the time they were less than impressive.

Emma, do you realise the Tories are the ones who have been in power for a decade? As such, they're the ones who are fucking things up for us all.Do you ask yourself why? Most people have improved there lives in recent years, more overseas holidays more new cars on the road etc.

The oposition fail to inspire the voters this is a fact"

Most people have immproved their lives, have they? Apart from the increasing numbers driven to use food banks. And apart from the increased number who have ended up homeless. And, lest we forget, apart from the tens of thousands who ended up dead from covid. And apart from pretty much everybody, actually.

According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies in 2020:

"The COVID-19 crisis hit at a time when income growth had already been extremely disappointing for some years. Median (middle) household income was essentially the same in 2018-19 (the latest data) as in 2015-16. This stalling itself came after only a short-lived recovery from the Great Recession. The combined effect had been a decade of unprecedented poor improvements in living standards, with average income before housing costs having grown less than over any other 10-year period since records began in 1961."

"But, but ... Gordon Brown bankrupted the country ... and Jeremy Corbyn would have been much worse.

Lol, the last I heard, neither Diane Abbot nor Sadiq Khan were running the country, but thanks for confirming the predicted whataboutary.

Obviously not. But as you know you don't vote for the Prime Minister you vote for your local MP. And as you also know the PM doesn't run the country single handed, so as representatives of the potential government at the time they were less than impressive.

To be fair in my opinion

Considering the crisis that has engulfed the world I don’t think Boris and his government are doing a good job

I bet you weren’t shouting and slagging him off when you were paid to sit at home via furlough or grants

If anyone thinks they can do better ?

There are far too many people in this country who still subconsciously think that the toffs should be running the show and that it’s natural for them to be in charge.

They won’t admit it of course, they may not even know it because they lack the requisite self awareness but ‘they know their place’, to paraphrase Ronnie Corbett.

Brazil and the states handled it worse. Otherwise every other country seems to be more organised, have a clearer plan, have less corruption, have less infections and deaths.

I agree 100%. But I am not going to just point at the Torys here. I think the standard of political debate/engagement/leadership has diminished across the board.

Politics has become a career, with a conveyor of people working as researchers etc. then working through the system to become candidates, being parachuted into constituencies for which they have no feel.

They seem to be out for themselves and do not truly work for the people they are representing.

As I said this is on all sides. Labour used to recruit from the Unions, people that had life and work experience in the regions. The Torys used to recruit from different groups! But there was a feeling that they had experience of where they lived and the people there.

All of the above seems to be missing in today's parties. It's only campaigning parties like the Greens and UKIP (as much as I am not a fan) that seem to maintain that local connection...

Our democracy needs a huge overhaul, our voting mechanism, the House of Lords, etc. etc.

Sadly we no longer live in a society that votes for policy. We vote for personality and slogans. Labour may have lost the last election because of Corbyn but the Tories won because of three simple words.

Get. Brexit. Done.

Dominic Cummings does love a three word slogan.

Lest we forget Take Back Control. Or ‘Hands. Face. Space.’ Until we start focusing on policy over popularity we’re just going to ricochet from one shit government to another.

However most people judge a government on its successes and not on a few mistakes . Ironically those who criticise the government can never provide any evidence that they themselves could have done any better ( they may ever have made things a lot worse ).

The views that matter are probsbly that of the silent minority , not those who constantly choose to criticise the current governments performance in very difficult circumstances.

Last Decembers election was a reality check for many. The great news is that when it comes to voting , everyone is treated equally. The actual result is self explanatory.

Politicians have never had good press and people have always had reservations about governments , politicians etc...

However with Johnson and his flock, we have hit rockbottom in terms of integrity, trust, honesty, transparency and decency.

Even people voting Tory surely realise that this lot are just a bunch of slimey and untrustworthy individuals with no morale.

"Sadly we no longer live in a society that votes for policy.

To be fair though Corbyn's policies were sh*t as well.

Which ones?

You will only disagree with what I say so no point in posting.

So be content with the fact not enough people thought what he had to offer was acceptable."

Tories aren't as bad as I thought. They're making independence for Scotland more and more likely with every passing day.

That latest poll showing 58% 'Yes' is nothing to do with any campaigning by the SNP; because, since March, there hasn't been any.

So, Boris, keep doing what you're doing. Who knows, maybe, given enough of you and your kind's bullshit, the people of the North of England will come back to their senses too?

At what point do you look at this government & its almost perpetual state of failure & think to yourself that voting for Boris et al may have been a bad idea?"

Yes , his draconian lockdowms for a virus with a 99.997 % survival rate has been the final insult

With an estimated 1 million people now going to die from missed cancer screening and depression (lost jobs) etc

So yes I detest him as much as the Marxist Labour Party.

Not really

A think he was a decent man of integrity and principles and was utterly savaged.

I dont think he had a ruthless streak though, so no probally not.

I always thought the plan was to drag labour back to its roots and then bring in a younger leader.

In voting terms the public have never voted in a left wing radical government.

The public have never voted in Screaming Lord Sutch either.

The simple fact that you need to understand is the public did not either of those two options.

In a democratic country meaningful change can only be brought by the Party which is governing. The bigger the majority of that Party the more the likelihood of a meaningful change. In my opinion, as a (pre Boris) Tory voter, the only chance of a labour government achieving a decent majority is to occupy the Centre ground. If they do I will vote Labour. Destroyed by the media? The media tends to give all politicians an opportunity to express their views. The public obtain information from a wide variety of different sources , make their decisions and vote accordingly.

Unless a party have something to offer the voter , if is a bit pointless blaming the media or suggesting that the government hold people in contempt.

The last election result proved that the winning party took into account everyone's views .

If you're talking policy.

The blind tests that are out there. The ones where you pick your favourite policy on each issue without seeing which parties policy it is.

The Tories always always come out near the bottom. The Greens always win by a mile.

Your comment on powercuts in the 70s just reinforces how powerful the misinformation campaign is.

I'm open to other reasons why people vote the way they do. But policy is clearly not one of the main reasons.

And anyone who offers any kind of change is destroyed in the media.

How is cloud cuckoo land today?

Why don't people want any meaningful improvement to their lives? For me that's the big question.

If they don't, I will vote LibDem if Boris continues to lead the Conservatives..

Interesting.

For me. Labour are pointless if they're just offering a slightly less shit version of what we've got now."

That may well be true but until another viable Party emerges that's all you have got .....unless you emigrate to somewhere with a regime which promores policies closer to what you seek.

At what point do you look at this government & its almost perpetual state of failure & think to yourself that voting for Boris et al may have been a bad idea?"

The alternative would have been the rabidly left wing labour party and their proposal to take us back to 1970s politics and nationalise everything. I don't care how bad the Tories look Starmer et al would arse the country double quick.

If you think Starmer (who is a centrist) is "rabidly left wing" then you may need to read up about the man, and about what "left wing" means.

Using "egg heads" as an insult for scientists says more about you than it does anyone else. Why is it a bad thing to understand science?

People really do have a selective memory dont they?

Labour are always associated with the winter of discontent yet people seem to forget English cities being set ablaze, rampant unemployment and a country divided by 2 under thatcher in the 80s.

The relative boom time under labour in the late 90 is also conveniently forgotten.

"... and theres definitely plenty of you about, so let me ask this;

At what point do you look at this government & its almost perpetual state of failure & think to yourself that voting for Boris et al may have been a bad idea?Well judging by the sad performance of Labour never.

There is a saying the government is only as good as the oposition

Emma, do you realise the Tories are the ones who have been in power for a decade? As such, they're the ones who are fucking things up for us all.

When you say fucking up things what specifically are you referring to? And please don't mention the Chinese virus because that's the egg heads.

I'm bored so I'll play along for a moment.

Science? Witchcraft innit.

"Tories aren't as bad as I thought.

'Once in generation referendum' as said by the leader of the SNP was in 2014."

Ah, the 'once in a generation' argument. From someone with no dog in the hunt, no less.

I can't help but wonder why you don't think the Scots should be allowed to change their minds - break their word, even - when the UK is currently governed by a liar and a hypocrite who is content to break international law, just to please Brexit voters?

"The last election result proved that the winning party took into account everyone's views."

No it didn't. The Tories only got 43.6% of the popular vote. Which means 56.4% of the electorate disagreed with their policies and did not assent to being governed by them.

If you lived in an actual, representative democracy - like Germany or New Zealand - the Tories would not be in power right now.
