Reprt from summit

A new Associated Press poll finds that there has been a massive 15 point swing and that most Americans are now hostile to Black Lives Matter protests.

“The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that 44% of Americans disapprove of protests in response to police violence against Black Americans, while 39% approve. In June, 54% approved. The new survey was conducted Sept. 11-14, before Wednesday’s announcement that a lone Louisville police officer would be charged in the Taylor case, but not for her actual death.”

The figures are also interesting when broken down along racial lines.

Just 35% of white Americans approve of the protests, down from 53% back in June. Just Latinos, 31% approve, compared with 44% in June.

Support for BLM amongst African-Americans has also dropped from 81% to 63%.

As Chris Menahan notes, “AP-NORC chose to exclude Latinos from their chart to make it seem like this is just a Black vs White thing.”

Support for BLM amongst Republicans has also dropped from 29% to 9%. Meanwhile, 70% of Democrats still approve of the protests, while significantly more people on both sides of the political spectrum believe the demonstrations to be “mostly or all violent.”

The survey also finds that belief in the central underpinning narrative pushed by BLM, that blacks are being indiscriminately targeted by police, is being eroded.

“Overall, Americans are less likely than they were in June to say deadly force is more commonly used against a Black person than a white person, 50% vs. 61%. And fewer now say that officers who cause injury or death on the job are treated too leniently by the justice system, 52% vs. 65%.”

The numbers are clear – supporting Black Lives Matter is a losing election issue.

Only when Democrats began to realize that a few weeks ago did they finally denounce the bedlam that has plagued American streets since the end of May.

Trump can't close those polls. If he doesn't resort to mass vote suppression he's toast come November, and if he does resort to mass vote suppression to claim a win, then you'll see millions of Americans on the streets protesting. Either way it's not looking good him.

The interesting thing here is that you see anti-racist protestors as "Marxists", who "pump hate".

The right wing media in the states have done a fantastic job of deflecting the issues of institutional racism and the problems with their police murdering people of colour in the street on a whim, and convincing people that those who speak out against these issues, are the problem.

The car being rammed into Trump supporters by a prominent BLM organiser yesterday probably doesn’t help the figures.

Trump also now pushing through his Supreme Court pick is only going to cause even more issues. It would have surely been looked on as more reasonable thing to have waited.

I wish it would all calm down a little.

2016 was a tea party compared to this year.

It's often a problem for demonstrations. They start off as a group of well intentioned people making their point in a peaceful way but get joined by extremists from all sides looking for a fight. The original message gets lost

I totally agree

Most are peaceful

Princeton Study: Black Lives Matter Responsible For 91% of Riots Over Last 3 Months

America experienced 637 riots between May 26 and September 12.

A new study by Princeton University’s US Crisis Monitor shows that the U.S. experienced 637 riots between May 26 and Sept. 12, and 91% of those riots were linked to the Black Lives Matter movement.

In other words, BLM was responsible for 9 out of 10 riots across the country.

Riots are defined by the project as “demonstrations in which any demonstrators engage in violently disruptive or destructive acts (e.g. violence, looting, vandalism, etc.), as well as mob violence in which violent mobs target other individuals, property, businesses, or other groups.”

“Forty-nine states, not counting Washington, D.C., experienced riots during that time period, the study found. California led the nation with 86 riots during that time, closely followed by Oregon with 79 riots during that time period, the data show,” reports the Daily Caller.

Mainstream media talking heads have repeatedly asserted that the riots were either not happening on any large scale or were “mostly peaceful.”

The statistics suggest otherwise.

Despite attempts to spin the riots as peaceful protests, more and more Americans aren’t buying it.

“A majority of U.S. adults (55%) now express at least some support for the movement, down from 67% in June amid nationwide demonstrations sparked by the death of George Floyd,” reported Pew. “The share who say they strongly support the movement stands at 29%, down from 38% three months ago.”

When one considers the level of intimidation and bullying metered out to those who refuse to express support for BLM, the real figures are probably much lower in terms of support for Black Lives Matter.

It’s no surprise that Democrats like Nancy Pelosi are only now condemning riots, arson and looting after 4 months of mayhem.

After initially ignoring or justifying the violence, Democrats have seen the polls and performed a total 180.

That's a lot of contradictions.

I'm not so interested in US politics, both parties seem awful. One lead by a very confused bitter insecure angry man.

But I do find media manipulation of the public perception interesting.

Sorry didn't mean to derail your thread.

Watched a demo by BLM protestors marching through a town and it stopped to rage against one elderly white woman drinking and eating at a restaurant. Shouting in her face, one female actually snatched her glass and drink the contents. The cameras phones came out to record it....it's turning in to the kind of thuggish thing the Nazis did to the Jews.

So you saw some people do something nasty to someone. And have concluded that BLM are similar to the Nazi genocide of the 1930s/1940s.

What can we learn from this?

I am amazed it's only 15% down with all the other rubbish going on? Ashley banjo and all the other virtue signallers just don't realize they are turning people against them and the likes of Dawn butler coming out and saying what she did after the policemans murder was just ridiculous when we all know the contempt she has for them and wanting them defunded it is any suprise their support is dwindling?

It is only a suprise to those on the hard left.

It's not just this one incident though - there have been others very similar. Nazi Germany flourished in the 1930's because nobody was brave enough to stand up to them and question their doctrine. How many examples of similar behaviour will it take before somebody

starts to question, and will it be too late by then?

"Watched a demo by BLM protestors marching through a town and it stopped to rage against one elderly white woman drinking and eating at a restaurant.

It's not just this one incident though - there have been others very similar. Nazi Germany flourished in the 1930's because nobody was brave enough to stand up to them and question their doctrine. How many examples of similar behaviour will it take before somebody

starts to question, and will it be too late by then?"

Well I agree. People who are speaking out against the government in the states are being slandered and painted to be the enemies.

Governments don't announce that they have become fascist, they announce that anti-fascists are the enemies of the state.

The person I was replying to wasn't talking about that. They were suggesting that people standing up to their government were akin to the Nazis and the genocide they conducted in the 30s and 40s.

Interesting. It’s well known that there are a lot of Marxists in the US.

It’s also true that people love to resort to violence for no reason. They must have made up these stories about Black people being killed by the police for no reason too.

Some people are incredible really. You get a spate of incidents with Black people getting killed in the most appalling way by cops. This has been happening on and off for a very long time. Black people start demonstrating with some of them going over the top by resorting to violence.

However the problem is the Marxists pumping everything up.

When I read idiotic posts like this, I start believing in three year old babies being given the right to vote. They’d be as able to make an informed decision than these loonies.

I wonder why some people are so against a positive message being spread about all lives mattering equally.

‘Most everything is political. It’s naive to try to shield from it, unless you happen to have an ulterior motive or vested interest in retaining the status quo.

If I’m watching a family show with my kids and someone speaks about BLM, I use any questions as an opportunity to have a discussion with the kids about why this movement matters so much - it’s very much a welcome and important matter.

Why would I want to shield my kids from that?

The Nazis controlled the media. They blamed economic woes on minorities and ‘othered’ the German Jews. They lauded nationalism above internationalism. (America first?).

You’re right that we have a fascist problem in the west. You’re falling for the lies spread by the wrong side though.

wow.... so many things need to be "unpacked" in this thread.... it would take a dozen different posts to answer them all so i am going to answer a load of them here....

most of them labelled under "context"

a) the person who talked about the BLM person driving into trump supporter...

According to the Southern Poverty Law Centre, there have been around 70 incidences this summer of "vehicles being driven into BLM protests".......

b) the person the is quoting the "dally caller".... people need to know about the daily caller.....

it was founded by Tucker Carlson, if the name is familiar it is he of the fox news parish, who doesn't believe white nationalism is an issue or even exists, he who defends the actions of kyle Rittenhouse, said U.S. immigration made the country "poorer, dirtier and more divided.

said that BLM is a marxist organisation (oooooh... now we know who's talking points the "x's" are parroting..... damn!!!)

"Reprt from summit

Only when Democrats began to realize that a few weeks ago did they finally denounce the bedlam that has plagued American streets since the end of May."

People get bored and want to move on and much more has happened in this time.

The taking the knee is now crazy as people are sick of it.Same as clapping for the NHS etc, just a fad

I am not saying it is right or wrong but just how people think in my experience.

the point i was making was that its not the fact you mentioned it "one for one".... its the fact that it happens more often than people mention it...

its just the case that its not often charged with something as serious as "murder" as in the charlottesville case... or "attempted murder" in the case you mentioned....

its just that people have not been seriously injured or killed in those incidences... its not the case that it has not been happening all summer and thats my point!

Fabio i respect you so much, your presentation of the facts, your use of word and grammer, bring every forum that you contribute to a level so above most others, BUT and there is always a but, I think you slightly comprise your clarity when you are presented with criticism of BLM,

I am Irish and have been to funerals of my countrymen killed by the British army and there loyalists death squads, many years ago, be very careful what you wish for, the "PEACEFUL"demonstrations and street politics in my experience is that the extremist on both sides quickly manipulate the mass demonstrations and the ideals that sparked these protests are forgotten, in the ensuing conflict it is always the victims of injustice and their people who pay a terrible price for the vanity and purity of ideals of the zealots who manipulate the well meaning, in this case, PEACEFUL DEMAASORATORS, history of my country and so many more is littered with so many examples tiny extremists movements exploiting a mass movement to impose their totalering regime, so again I warn, be careful what you wish for

Can you give us some pointers what is okay to talk about here, and what isn't.

It is our problem. If Trump gets another four years it will have major repercussions for the entire world, not least of which would be the consequences for the fight against climate change.

Your naive and insular attitude is completely inappropriate when you're talking about the worlds major super power and economy. What happens in the USA in November is important to everyone, and I will not cease to discuss the issue simply because you suffer from blinkered vision.

Manchester

America is a few years ahead of the U.K. in its journey to polarisation of politics.

The BLM movement was born out of the years of frustration at the racism intrinsic in American society.

The rallies just like protests on all subjects in the UK have been hijacked by extremists who go looking to cause trouble but this should not detract from the core issue which is the Racism.

I won’t bore you with statistics but if you’re black and commit a murder you’re many times more likely to face the death penalty than a white man.

Black areas of Chicago are massively deprived through the stupid education system which helps rich areas but doesn’t help poor areas. So if you’re poor and then not given a suitable education then your choices are limited . No job and no future or do some dealing or robbing and live that life but accepting the risks of an early death.

In many Muslim run countries unless you have oil revenue education is poor which is why it is easy to radicalise younger people into chauvinist thugs who thing of women as chattels and Christians as a target of hate.

America is the same regarding blacks and ethnic population.

So rant about statistics and voting numbers as much as you like but the fact is Trump will take away basic healthcare and the safety net which people desperately need and a civilised society should provide.

How is a supreme law court populated by political thinking judges in the first place. What a shower of crap!

The law should be lead by right and wrong not political leanings.

America is in decline and they are just hastening their own demise. The U.K. is no where near as racist as America but well on the way down already. Boris and Co. are just greasing the slide.

"actually just a we are talking about incidences of vehicles being used as weapons... CNN are doing a piece on the issue (probably brought up by the incident twisted was talking about)

so between may 27 and sept 5.... total incidences of drivers going into protests... 104

of which 96 were by civilians... 8 by law enforcement

there was a serious incident yesterday in california involving a person driving into a trump rally.... there was actually also in incident on friday night in LA of a black suv vehicle going into a BLM protest"

Are you actually offering "context" or just a slant?

You say that there have been more vehicles driven into blm protests, how many of those vehicles were escaping being surrounded by a mob of violent protestors?

"Reprt from summit

Not our problem, America can do America, we British should be concerned with issues over here than a country which is separated from us by an Ocean.

It is our problem. If Trump gets another four years it will have major repercussions for the entire world, not least of which would be the consequences for the fight against climate change.

What if he does?, what I see here is a lot of talk about issue which are not within our control sphere. Our overactive imaginations are running wild with what ifs?

How about something more constructive perhaps? In your local area? Small changes make bigger impacts, esp about climate change for example.

You're right, it's not under our control, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't consider it or discuss it.

And you are right about local activism, it all helps and I do get involved in local activities and protests when possible.

I'm pleased that you've moved from lecturing people to suggesting positive steps. It's a definite improvement

I'm still going to debate politics though as it interests me and is pertinent to all of our lives.

What’s the saying? Choose your battles, no one can win the US.

By no means you shouldn’t not stop, I just think for the sanity of many posters, we should focus more on the issues which are within the UK. It’s about prioritisation. Things are going weird here also!

If you click the donate button on the BLM website it takes you to payment which goes through a company called goblue.

If you click donate on the Joe burden election campaign website it takes you to goblues payment system.

Goblue is the fundraising political machine of the democratic party who's mission is to put Biden in office.

So all donations to BLM do not go to black people. It all goes to the democratic party.

More white people are shot and killed by the us police since 2017

But all you hear about is black criminals getting shot and the likes of LeBron James, Lewis Hamilton defending them.

If all these people did what the police asked at time of arrest and not open fire on them or act violently they would still be alive.

Do not kneel for criminals or a movement that is funding Joe Biden when it should be funding black communities.

Perhaps the company do the admin and forward the donations to the relevant benefactor?

‘More while people are shot and killed by the police since 2017’, is that a higher percentage or just a higher total?

More poorly researched and biased right wing bullshit I'm afraid, and the name is actually ActBlue, not goblue.

"ActBlue is a nonprofit technology organization established in June 2004 that enables left-leaning nonprofits, Democratic candidates, and progressive groups to raise money from individual donors on the Internet by providing them with online fundraising software. Its stated mission is to "empower small-dollar donors". Wikipedia

Note the term 'progressive groups' in there?

The money donated to BLM does not go to the Democrats, it goes to the people it's supposed to.

"I'm thinking that every day people don't like people rioting

Its refreshing to see that people are waking up to the race division hate pumped from the Marxists

And as blm and the left burn their way through America support will diminish further. I see hope

The interesting thing here is that you see anti-racist protestors as "Marxists", who "pump hate".

The right wing media in the states have done a fantastic job of deflecting the issues of institutional racism and the problems with their police murdering people of colour in the street on a whim, and convincing people that those who speak out against these issues, are the problem."

just wondering if your have the numbers for the amount of unarmed black men that the police murder each year?would be interesting to find out how many it is

White people make up 60% of the USA population, and 37% of police shootings end up with white people killed.

Black people make up 13% of the USA population, and 23% of police shootings end up with black people killed.

From the data it clearly shows that black people are more likely to get killed by police.

Willie McCoy was sleeping in his car when police shot at him 55 times. The police department said that was reasonable force. Police officers said they shot him as they feared their lives. Yet body cam footage show him sleeping.

He did fuck all and was executed by the police.

Yes, I'm sure if he complied with police he would be alive

It takes zero effort to see there is a problem. It's not demeaning as a white person to accept that black people are unfairly treated.

If you actually read the article it gives a reason why.

It also says black people are more likely to be a victim.

It boils down to systemic racism putting black people at a disadvantage. Hence they are more likely to live in poverty, and more likely to turn to crime.

If all these people did what the police asked at time of arrest and not open fire on them or act violently they would still be alive.

Do not kneel for criminals or a movement that is funding Joe Biden when it should be funding black communities.

"

That’s a lie, and what’s worse you probably knew that and posted it anyway.

"

‘More while people are shot and killed by the police since 2017’, is that a higher percentage or just a higher total? "

I can answer this as it is an argument trump and his alt right support like to use...

In total numbers, yes more white people are shot and killed by police.... however as a percentage you are 4 times more likely to be killed by police if you are black than if you are white....

Hope that helps for context

Central

It's standard for such initial intensity to diminish over time, especially when other very important issues conflict with it, in this instance the covid-19 problem. That affects everyone, in particular their survey, so will have greater priority.

The media in the USA is very biased to the right, so influences opinion.

I think the target demographics of the parties reflects the differences, with white older people m, those who have benefitted their whole lives, dropping their support, as they're been part of the systemic racism there since birth. The President has also fostered violence against dissent, which leaves his white supremacist sheep inflamed and unwilling and able to have intelligent rational thought

"Watched a demo by BLM protestors marching through a town and it stopped to rage against one elderly white woman drinking and eating at a restaurant.

What can we learn from this?"

"I'm thinking that every day people don't like people rioting

Its refreshing to see that people are waking up to the race division hate pumped from the Marxists

And as blm and the left burn their way through America support will diminish further. I see hope "

You mean the race division that was implemented as laws?

so between may 27 and sept 5.... total incidences of drivers going into protests... 104

of which 96 were by civilians... 8 by law enforcement

there was a serious incident yesterday in california involving a person driving into a trump rally.... there was actually also in incident on friday night in LA of a black suv vehicle going into a BLM protest"

Thats America not relevent to the UK

The last time I looked the Republican president was claiming he'd made America great again..great I suppose if you want to live in a country increasingly divided by hate, an environment he's responsible for creating.
