Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died.

And this is the hypocrite who argued that it would be wrong to confirm a Democratic president’s supreme court nominee in the year before a presidential election, now claiming that it’s perfectly alright to confirm a Republican supreme court nominee just weeks before a presidential election
Even if Trump loses in November this will be his lasting legacy. If he wins a second term there's now no hope left for the US. |

mcconnell is going to have the fight of his life if he tries to force this thru this side of the election! he set his own "standard" for SCOTUS nominees in 16....
every republican in a close senate race will not want any part of this... its a poison pill
they only need 4 republicans to say no.... lisa merkowski of alaska has already said no....
mitt romney will likely say no!, Chuck grassley is on record as saying it shouldn't happen this close to an election
Same with lindsay Graham, who is in a super close race in South Carolina, and thats without talking about susan collins, cory gardner and thom tilys...
live by the sword... die by the sword....

well what most people are doing are point out the words of mitch mcconnell....
if they go against them... i think not only will they lose the whitehouse, they will probably lose the senate....
if they do try and succeed in ramming this one thru (which i don't think they will!) watch for the democrats if they control the senate and the whitehouse to pull the nuclear option... and expand the members of the SCOTUS to possibly 13 or 15..........
also... actually this is a wake up call the super "progressives" who think biden is not left enough and were going to stay home or vote 3rd party... this is a reminder that the vote counts at all levels... and suck it up and vote! |

Ah yes, that insane radical left that would allow people to vote for people other than them. You are aware it's the Republicans on the right who rig elections by gerrymandering and voter suppression, aren't you? They don't think anybody has any business voting for anybody other than them so they do everything they can to stop people doing that. They literally want a one-party state and a dog-eat-dog country, and you are saying the left is radical?
Get a life and stop swallowing their bullshit. Literally no viable politician in the USA has a radical left agenda. Nobody. It's absurd.
If Trump wins again in November the Americans will be lucky to have another election in 2024. But yeah, let's pretend it's the left who are endangering democracy. It's much easier than arguing facts. |

I think Amy Coney Barrett will get the nomination, not my pick as I want someone more conservative. However I think will have to be a woman to appease the left. I think the only thing they will try to push is that they will suggest she us a religious fanatic as she is a Catholic, goes to church and has 7 children. (Something the left dispises)
However, can you imagine for a moment that this was a democrat nomination and that nomination was a devout Muslim? The left would literally be creaming their underwear over such a stunning and brave prospect.
Hypocrisy much?
I hope the GOP say fuck you and push this through before the election. Take the moral low ground. Totally demoralise their base. Go into this election with no nominee and the dem base will be fired up. Their turnout will be huge and that's on top of their 50 million mail in democrat votes
Time to drop the hammer

You seem rather sure of what the left despises. Seems like you've been taken in somewhat by the right's propaganda machine. Just another brainwashed Trump supporter. Oh dear.
I'm leftwing, and probably further left than 90% of leftwing Americans, and guess what? I don't really care what anyone's ethnicity or religion is, nor how many kids they have. What I care about is that whoever is appointed has the ability to do their job effectively and fair mindedly, and not along partisan lines, unlike you and the majority of right wingers apparently.
I would save the gloating until after November. |

I see she was a great lover of opera...
Many US singers, having met her (earlier today Jamie Barton tweeted a photo of them together), are heartbroken at her passing.

RIP RBG
Her replacement might not be that bad. Cast your minds back to July, when this happened:
"Both of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court appointees ruled against the President in Thursday's decision over whether the President could defy a subpoena making him turn over his tax returns."
If Kavanaugh and Gorsuch can uphold the law like this, maybe all the despair isn't warranted?
There's also the possibility another female justice could be appointed.
Mind you, if Trump does get to appoint his own guy before the election, that's an indication he doesn't think he'll win. |

there are two different things that could happen.... they could try and push it thru before election day...... or they can try and push it thru in the "lame duck" session if trump loses the election....
at the moment with the senate being 53-47 republican, there needs to be 4 republicans willing to say no!
there is already 1... Lisa Murkowski!
now looking for 3.... romney and collins are likely no's... and then you are looking at one more!
there is another quirk.....
if they try and do it in the lame duck, look at the arizona senate race between incumbant republican martha mcsally and democrat mark kelly (kelly is a former us astronaut, and husband to gabby gifford, who was a former arizona congressperson before being shot at point blank range by a right wing nut whilst campaigning..... think "jo cox" but lucky to have survived)
anyway.... because arizona senate race is a "special election" due to the death of John Mccain, the arizona governor got to choose the replacement!
but whereas all the other senators would wait till january to take their seats from the november election, in arizona the person who wins would take over the seat as soon as the result is ratified (likely to be 10 days!)....
the reason why i mention it is mark kelly is up by 15 in arizona over mcsally (she is super unpopular in the state for being a trump slappy and not standing up for McCain)
so if kelly were to win... the maths then become 52-48 republican for the lame duck... meaning you would need 3 republicans to stop it! |

Always good to get some proper detail. I hope you're right. Certainly, the maths will make things tricky for him.
As I thought might be possible, he's said he's going to nominate a woman to replace RBG.
Personally, I think that's the right thing to do - but that he's said it out of desperation.
Also, if (as we hope) Biden gets to pick the new justice, he's now going to get a lot of grief if he appoints a man. |

Good for you!, I just think its a waste of time tbf, what can Britain do? Sweet FA, what can ordinary UK citizens do? FA, America is a law unto itself, which is its right. Its quite silly to think the opinion of a few self righteous Brits people are going to make a difference there.
What we can do is make a difference here in this country, by exercising our right to vote here.
You are right about trade deal blah blah blah, and we can only let the cards fall where they must. Again we have no control over that either as its likely will be done under a TP government.
This illusion of control over world events.....its makes people feel too self important, honestly |

President and the Senate get to decide, who cares if its an election year. I suspect when Trump wins a second term then Clarence will retire before 2024 so Trump gets another one in. You couldn't make it up |

"Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died.
"Moscow Mitch" McConnell will ensure a Conservative judge will be appointed and the Republican party will be another step nearer to the goal of turning the USA into a one-party state.
Not our problem, we don’t have a say, concentrate on this country instead
No, I'm also quite concerned about what happens in other countries, thank you.
Why? What’s the point? do you have any political power? Lots? None? You are not American or a American Senator.
You're asking me what is the point of caring about things that happen to other people?
That's a rather sociopathic thing to ask, but you do you. "

thats not the same standard that the republicans applied in 2016, which is where half the uproar comes from.....
if clarence thomas were to retire, he is about as most "conservative" there is on SCOTUS at the moment.... so it would be a like for like swap if that were the case....
but if the republicans do try and push this thru, even in lame duck, which would probably be worse if trump were to lose... if the dems wins control the one seat on SCOTUS with a conservative majority already may be the least of the issues...... |

Radical? I’d hardly call it radical, you want to be big man on campus, go for it, it just smacks of being self involved, and a bit attention seeking.

I don't think it really makes a massive difference, the judges make decisions on law not ideology, unless somebody knows different? Are you telling me rbg made rulings based on her bias!. |

" I think the only thing they will try to push is that they will suggest she us a religious fanatic as she is a Catholic, goes to church and has 7 children. (Something the left dispises)
"
I'm really thankful for right wing nut jobs.
If it wasn't for them telling me what they think they know I think, what they think they know I like, and what they think they know I didn't like, I'd be at a total loss as to what my positions were on issues.
Thank heavens for the fever dreams of loonies - where would we be without them? |

I have no interest in subject matter because its not our business, I am interested in highlighting the futility of complaining about something which is inevitable. |

You posted on here to say you have no interest in the topic despite having no interest in the topic?
And you're complaining to highlight the futility of complaining?

"I'm hoping trump gets a very Conservative judge passed in time. It will have to be a woman as to avoid the fake smeers that will be pre packaged and ready to go. Rip Ruth "
If you're so Conservative, what are you doing on such a sinful site as this? Surely the husband should be out working and the wife should be at home cooking and cleaning for the family and baking cakes for the church fete? When the Americans talk about wanting conservative judges, they are talking about one's that will uphold traditional family values like that. I'm surprised a couple "looking for sexy times" is so keen on conservatism. |
