Analysis by the UK government expects the net benefit of its Japan trade deal to amount to 0.07% of GDP.

Woooooow. It's huuuuuuge!

(And we already had a trade deal with Japan before we decided to shoot ourselves in the foot with Brexit. As well as many other trade deals.)

I cannot claim this comment as I stole it off another forum.

This good news can be compared to that feeling of finding 50p down the back of a sofa!!

Brilliant !!

I think Japan are laughing like fuck!!

We may as well get used to deals that others benefit from as our government needs some spin on any news no matter how insignificant and useless.

You obviously can’t read, it’s worth 0.07% of GDP, come back when we get all the deals that replace or better the ones we had before

Bloody remoaners. They're just bitter about being dragged out of the biggest trading bloc in the world. Why can't they see all these amazing economic benefits we're already getting?

The trade deal between Japan and the EU prohibits Japan from giving more favourable terms to another country. So at best this deal can only be as good but cannot be better.

0.07 % of GDP "

When I heard it, this morning, it had been rounded up to 0.1% of GDP; so I'm disappointed. LOL

Mind you, it's about £1.5bn, isn't it?

Or is that using the size of the pre-Covid economy to work it out?

Btw, a game changer is when you eat pheasant instead of venison (apologies to Darren Walsh).

Your comment only shows you know very little about your beloved EU.

EU rules state no country is allowed to begin trade negotiations until they have actually left the EU.

That means even though the UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, the UK could only start trade negotiations on 1st February 2020. The day after we left the EU.

you are right in saying that.... but you still have to look at the context

only issue i have is that what has been signed today is a slightly less better version of the EU-Japan deal...

the EU-Japan deal was done from scratch.... the UK-Japan deal was done as a Template of the EU-Japan deal which had just been signed so would take a lot less time...

lets see how long the UK-US deal takes because the US want one built from Scratch.....

"Wonder how all the German and French car manufacturers feel now they realise we have easy access to the Japanese car market?

I doubt they are losing much sleep,

The trade deal between Japan and the EU prohibits Japan from giving more favourable terms to another country. So at best this deal can only be as good but cannot be better.

So its took them 3 years to get a trade deal..which is exactly what it was?

Genius.

Where did 3 years come from?

When did we vote to leave the EU?

Your comment only shows you know very little about your beloved EU.

EU rules state no country is allowed to begin trade negotiations until they have actually left the EU.

That means even though the UK voted to leave the EU in June 2016, the UK could only start trade negotiations on 1st February 2020. The day after we left the EU.

Can you read my mind? I asked a question, when did we leave the EU? You

You posted.

'When did we vote to leave the EU?'

Yep, and the answer is?

I've already stated the dates.

Read my above post.!"

Firstly, why did it take so long to agree a withdrawal agreement? And why is it taking so long to make any trade deals? This was supposed to be so easy ??

you are right in saying that.... but you still have to look at the context

only issue i have is that what has been signed today is a slightly less better version of the EU-Japan deal...

the EU-Japan deal was done from scratch.... the UK-Japan deal was done as a Template of the EU-Japan deal which had just been signed so would take a lot less time...

lets see how long the UK-US deal takes because the US want one built from Scratch....."

Is it worth also mentioning the US has said a UK-US trade deal won't happen if we imperil the Good Friday Agreement? You know, that thing that Johnson is busily undermining?

Some won't be able to. There will be barriers where there weren't any before.

What is your pro Brexit argument btw? The impression I'm getting is you're trying to push the idea it won't be as shit as many people warn it will be. That's hardly a benefit.

The point of being in the EU was being in the biggest trading bloc in the world and fewer barriers between us and them. After the transition period ends, that all changes. I'm not sure what's controversial abut saying that.

No reason to act so angry. It's not like he asked you why you voted to leave the EU after you spent ages not answering the question.

"And how will I still be able to work and live wherever I want in Europe?

Have you lived and work in the EU before?

Yes actually. And I won't be able to after the transition period ends. Thanks for proving my point for me.

So your saying nobody in the Uk can work in the EU anymore and nobody in the EU can work in the UK anymore?

Some won't be able to. There will be barriers where there weren't any before.

What is your pro Brexit argument btw? The impression I'm getting is you're trying to push the idea it won't be as shit as many people warn it will be. That's hardly a benefit.

So you say some won't be able too and you won't be able to.

I'm wondering why you won't be able to but other will be able to?

The point of being in the EU was being in the biggest trading bloc in the world and fewer barriers between us and them. After the transition period ends, that all changes. I'm not sure what's controversial abut saying that.

Hasn't answered the question of why you can't work in the EU anymore?"

You've said some can and some can't

You haven't given a reason why you are one of those who can't??

"Wonder how all the German and French car manufacturers feel now they realise we have easy access to the Japanese car market?

I doubt they are losing much sleep,

The trade deal between Japan and the EU prohibits Japan from giving more favourable terms to another country. So at best this deal can only be as good but cannot be better.

So its took them 3 years to get a trade deal..which is exactly what it was?

Genius.

Where did 3 years come from?"

Presumably once we voted out they started looking around for trade deals?

Or did they begin last week?

Huh? So the thing that drove you to vote leave was the conviction there would be no change whatsoever? Interesting logic there. my life won’t change with leave wouldn’t of changed if we had stayed it doesn’t change with a Tory government or labour if the Scots has voted to leave the U.K. it wouldn’t of changed I’d still live my normal life wouldn’t you or is your life going to crumble now we’ve left the U.K. ?

Japan, South Africa, Italy, Croatia, New York, Singapore, etc. I like places of interest and culture, travelling to Mexico to a swinging hotel isn’t my thing, each to their own though, I am surprised you have ventured out of the North East? Do you ever leave the hotel in Mexico ? ffs google it I’ll say it again it’s not a swingers hotel iv never been on a swingers hol but I’m hope iv to try one and don’t ppl in the north east go on holiday like and why does that suprosed you yes we do leave the hotel we party in downtown cancun boat trips we like to party while we still can and that’s fair enough if you like to go places of interest that’s yr thing good for you do you go alone or with friends?

Do you just go to places that have swinging clubs and swinging hotels? mate I know yr not stupid google temptations cancun it’s not a swingers hotel as far as I know Mexico only as two both called desires and beni doesn’t have any at all I go to places to have fun you like to walk round woth yr friend looking at historical buildings that’s great iv done that myself in Venice Barcelona Paris but soon got bored and found the bars but that’s our thing you seem to look down yr nose at ppl who like to go to swingers clubs I find that strange as yr on a swingers site

I am not interested in a swingers club in Mexico, I dont look down on anyone, I just can’t see you visiting places of culture and historical interest, the same way you can’t see me partying in Ibiza ?? how many times stop being a tool temptations isn’t a swingers club or swingers hotel you asked me do I just go to swingers clubs on hol I told you iv not been to any but hoping to try some me amd you are totally opposites and that’s good nothing wrong with that I just struggle to see you as a rep in Ibiza "

I struggle to see you having any interest in culture and history, I will reiterate, I have no interest in swinging clubs in Mexico

For me it is such a relief to hear that we can now at last buy Hondas from Japan.

Before we made them in Swindon. Now we can buy something made half way around the world instead of in our own back yard. There's progress for you.

"And how will I still be able to work and live wherever I want in Europe?"

Apply for a French passport like Boris Johnsons father did.

I would love to know how many people voted leave and the immediately applied for a heritage passport.

Hasn't answered the question of why you can't work in the EU anymore?

You've said some can and some can't

You haven't given a reason why you are one of those who can't??

I did answer you. Barriers will go up. Different countries will have different rules towards us living and working in each of them. If you want to know them all, go and look them all up."

How will different countries within the EU have different rules?

Anyway you still haven't answered why you personally can't work in the EU anymore?

Sounds like your not telling us something that it stopping you!

You obviously can’t read, it’s worth 0.07% of GDP, come back when we get all the deals that replace or better the ones we had before "

It's worth an increase on the existing EU -Japan deal of £15 Billion, or 0.07% of GDP.

So then, it's better than the one we had through the EU.

The day after we left the EU.

you are right in saying that.... but you still have to look at the context

only issue i have is that what has been signed today is a slightly less better version of the EU-Japan deal...

the EU-Japan deal was done from scratch.... the UK-Japan deal was done as a Template of the EU-Japan deal which had just been signed so would take a lot less time...

lets see how long the UK-US deal takes because the US want one built from Scratch.....

Is it worth also mentioning the US has said a UK-US trade deal won't happen if we imperil the Good Friday Agreement? You know, that thing that Johnson is busily undermining?"

Who in the US said that? Nancy Pelosi whilst demonstrating she had absolutely no understanding of the good Friday agreement. Fortunately she’s not the one in power over there.

One thing I have read on here a lot is, it won’t make any difference to your lives.

Everyone is assuming that Europe needs to trade with us. Sorry to shatter your illusions but they don’t,

My own clients in Europe are now insisting we manufacture in an EU country if we wish to keep supplying over the next few years. They are not interested in the customs cost or the increase in logistics costs that are coming. Oh and neither are we.

Guess what we’re moving some production and jobs to Italy, Austria and Belgium.

Those are real jobs and real GDP.

The EU population are just staggered by our self destruction and they are moving psycologically away from the UK. They see Boris as a mini trump and want nothing to do with him ( far right French excused).

COVID has destroyed our economy this year but Brexit by Boris is costing real harm to our children’s future prospects.

I know Cummings has a vision of a high tec island economy with leanings to tax haven status but that all requires huge investment in education and we are way too indebted to pay for that over a long period.

As a service economy where we make most of our money we are making it harder to trade with us. That is madness.

If you voted to stop immigration you’re a fool . The skilled tax paying workers are now going home to Eastern Europe where heavy international investment is moving. Study the numbers!

Low skilled illegal immigration into the U.K. is still going to happen we can’t stop it with France’s help so no hope without.

Dependant immigration from the rest of the world which is in fact larger than EU numbers will keep on growing because we can’t stop granny moving here from India, Pakistan Africa etc etc

She’s not paying any tax and will more than likely be needing the good old NHS pretty soon .

So if you’re a racist Brexit voter you have failed to read the small print. If you think we are can survive without a good relationship with Europe then you are naive .

Good we have a copy deal with Japan but it’s a tiny drop in the ocean of the lost business coming our way.

I’m sad as hell watching the incompetence of our leaders as they turn this once proud, leading member of the worlds business and political establishment into a circus which is being derided across the world.

It’s never ok to break international law. Just embarrassing all around.

Damming piece in the guardian today which points the finger of blame at the gmnts for the last 40 years.

Basically we dont make anything, the gap between rich and poor has got bigger and we have cut our own throats and our now led by a group of radical thatcherites.

So for those people believing the future will be bright.

Good luck with that.

Lionel, I can help you. I came up with a useful method on another thread if you don't want to bother really reading Sarah's posts.

To simulate the effect of them, just get very d*unk and spin arund in circles while hitting yourself in the face with a fly swatter.

I did it. It really helped me.

So for those people believing the future will be bright.

Good luck with that."

Yep, every government since the mid-70s in fact.

Not sure if there was anything big politically that happened around that time that could've been a catalyst for that....

"Sounds pretty good eh!? Good news for GB Plc"

It can't be right though, we can't have a trade deal, surely it's been mis-reported....we only started negotiations in June...I'm sure we were told that every trade deal would take "at least 10 years of negotiations".

You obviously can’t read, it’s worth 0.07% of GDP, come back when we get all the deals that replace or better the ones we had before You need to get a sense of humour"

Why,? You are the person who stated on here that you wanted to spit on remain voters? Was that supposed to be funny as well

"For me it is such a relief to hear that we can now at last buy Hondas from Japan.

Before we made them in Swindon. Now we can buy something made half way around the world instead of in our own back yard. There's progress for you."

The 2019 Eu-Japan trade deal was the end for Honda. Removing tariffs from Japanese built cars gave Honda every reason to shut the expensive plant at Swindon.

Is that what Honda said?

I have read that they want to move over to manufacturing more toward electric cars and saw more of a market in China which is where they are moving this to. And the other reason was.....

Wait for it... drum roll....

The British Retail Consortium said this week that consumers should be prepared for higher prices and reduced availability of products, warning that a disorderly break with Europe would lead to worse disruption than the coronavirus pandemic. Demand for food products from Europe, which would face an average tariff of 22%, is highest in January.

Read the fine print. The lions share of that 15 Billion goes to Japan (80%). This deal has more propaganda value than anything else.

It largely the same as the EU deal with Japan so what ever it ends up being in regards to value and the split its no worse than what the EU done in fact slightly better. Seems they looking at this as towards joining the trans Pacific trade group

From the EU looking in, the UK is a market place of 60 odd million relatively wealthy people. Something manufacturers all over the world want access to.

Said manufacturers lobby groups assert pressure to their respective government's.

In Ireland the IFA is one such group with lots of political clout, they are leaning on the Irish government to make sure current levels of export to the UK ain't affected by Brexit.

Don’t forget to subtract the 15-20 Billion John May the head of HMRC started is the anticipated extra customs costs to UK exporters. 1% of GDP so outweighs the hoped for 3 Billion in the Japan deal.

Shortage of providers is anticipated to push that customs cost much higher.

International hauliers are commenting they will reduce services over the New a Year to avoid any teething problems.

We are reducing exports for two weeks so there is truth in this.

The customs chief system was supposed to be replaced years ago as it’s well past its sell by date.

We suspect a lot of system failures may happen with the extra numbers being added so are being cautious.

So basically the retail consortium are probably right.

I suspect to save face the government will be waiving food through though. They know how panic will set in if there’s even a hint of shortages.

PS don’t worry toilet rolls are made in U.K. but then the paper used in manufacturing isn’t ... panic FFS panic!,

Yup, the IFA, the IFS, CBI, NFU and every other thinktank and business lobby group are also 'leaning on their governments to make sure current levels of export aren't affected by Brexit'. And yet they don't listen because what's happening? Everything has been negatively affected by Brexit for the last 5 years. Just look at the value of sterling in that time.

That, more than anything, speaks volumes about the intentions here. It's not about protecting livelihoods or British jobs or any if the other shit they say. Their actions have shown time and time again that they will devalue this country in order to attract "investment" in the form of Amazon-style union-busting warehouses and gig economy hustles where your wage is unliveable, your boss is an app and you have no worker's rights to protect yourself.

But don't worry because at least we'll be able to buy Nissans now, famously rare in Britain

Yes that's why people from all over the world are attracted to it as well as other western European countries, McDonalds, KFC and the like have branches everywhere because market research has shown them people have more disposable income than Poland for example.

America is regarded as a country of vast wealth yet so many live in poverty. I'm sure lots of people live in poverty in the UK but for people in Ireland and further afield the UK is seen as a wealthy country where one can always find a few pound to be made, I've traveled that road myself when there was little to no money to be earned at home.4nr

The point I'm making is that the UK is a huge market for German cars/trucks/construction equipment like wise French and Italian heavy industries import to the UK. Those industries lobby hard to their respective governments.

Obviously this is a complex issue with many components but no one in the EU benefits unless the EU gets over the fact that the UK is leaving and hastily tries to find a solution that maintains the status quo regarding trade.

On the EU deal the auto industry part does not kick in for a few years. Nissan in Barcelona is shutting down and Sunderland kept open
