Is Brexit still a great idea? Part 2

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Thought I'd keep this going as I have had no pertinent response to the points I made...................

"From an article in the Daily Mail, here are some reasons why Brexit is still a good idea.

1. The UK will be able to return to world markets to buy cheap food in particular, outside the Common Agricultural Policy. We can take advantage of more efficient producers of cereals, butter, meat and all the rest, and take advantage of surpluses from across the planet. Much the same goes for everything else we import.

That would mean our wages buy more and inflation would be lower, and, with the cheaper grocery bills, would help poorer people. More expensive food was one of worst consequences of joining the EEC in 1973.

2. The savings on the EU budget contribution are real. Though less than the Brexit campaign claimed, they are still substantial and can be spent on what the British people want.

3. Eastern European immigration raised British economic growth and made us all richer. The problem was political acceptability and the uncertainty about how large it might become – maybe to the point where the economic costs exceeded the benefits. It also meant there might be less non-EU migration, given the Government's "aspiration" on numbers. Now we can have migration with a policy the public actually support – a valuable thing, and the only way it can be secure and sustainable. Nurses from Zimbabwe, refugees from Syria, builders from Albania, students from China – we can have them all in a rational, planned way.

Daily Mail

So it's not true because it's in the Daily Mail?

Well it's not everyone's idea of an independent credible source. Besides hasn't the Mail had a change of heart regarding Brexit since Dacre stepped down? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/oct/23/the-guardian-view-on-the-daily-mail-and-brexit-a-very-public-shift

So the information should be ignored because of the source?

Its ignored because of its content, the source is just a convenient excuse.

Is the content based on a great deal, Boris’s oven ready deal, or a no deal?

Its independent of either. "

Then it has no credibility, unless you think there is no difference between a great deal and a no deal?

Why exactly does it have no credibility?

Let's ignore the fact that the daily mail is about as credible as the Sunday sport.

Some evidence of this happening please?

Where will it be spent.

Tbe British people..what..everything single one of us..again details please.

Sorry..Eastern European migration is a good thing according to the mail?

Surely this cant be the same daily mail who has been issuing dire warnings of the country being swamped by eastern European migrants.

Brexit is the result of the government's failures in the past decade.

Immigrants are an easy scapegoat. But did you know that we also have non-EU migrants? Shocking eh?

Areas of the UK that recieve EU funding voted in favour of Brexit. Places such as Wales and Cornwall. They will not recieve the same amount of funding from the UK Gov.

In fact, Cornwall has demanded that the UK Government provides £700m, the same of which the EU was giving it as it's considered one of the poorest areas in the UK. Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas!

The Brexit voter isn't thinking "There's too many Eastern Europeans here, it's not fair on Zimbabweans!". They are simply thinking "There are too many immigrants there full stop".

Importing food from places with food standards are much lower could be 'more efficient' (Read - Cheaper).

It's worded to say that we can get the same things made at the same standard we have, at a lower price because we have more sellers, so more competition, so better price. This is all bull. It's just a classic liberterian dream which does not happen in real life.

All those points I quoted were from an article in the Independent, the bible of the left wing. Although it reads less like a newspaper than it does an instruction manual for people with learning disabilities. Here's the link if you don't believe me

Many remain voters in the UK have allowed their hatred to overcome their logic and this is why they have no real credibility. Regarding the responses to my post, Shakespeare would say you have been hoist with your own petard. Modern parlance would translate that to "thoroughly schooled". Suckers

Is immigration out of control now?

As that's what it seems to be implying?

Economic migrants (on the whole)tend to come over here where there are jobs available.

So what difference is there going to be post Brexit, apart from presumably making it harder for them to do so ,if we introduce a points based system?

The argument isnt about completely controlling immigration, its about lessening the problem of uncontrolled immigration.

Existing immigrants staying or leaving is also irrelevant although many have already left but eitherway, it doesnt change the fact that going forward we will be managing migration better and therfore bongo boys point is not the lie you say it is.

"Thought I'd keep this going as I have had no pertinent response to the points I made...................

Why exactly does it have no credibility?"

Point one

GM modified foods in America are cheaper but certainly not healthier.

The meat is also full of steroids etc again not healthy.

We pride ourselves on our farmers producing good quality food and taking good care of the animals along with the environment.

Large farms in the U.K. can produce food a lot cheaper but if you think back a few years the East coast mega farms needed to do that were destroying the countryside to compete with imports.

Subsidies were introduced to help small farmers across Europe but large farms take most of the benefit. Those farms are in most part owned by wealthy land owners or pension funds. They should be forced to take a lower subsidy percentage if they are large operations.

The Government have said they will replace the EU subsidy with a U.K. version so yes our food will be more expensive to us as taxpayers to keep prices in the shops low but we should not allow lower standard food in at any price.

Point 2

Savings .. it costs the U.K. 74 Euros net per year per person to be part of the EU.

Benefits

EU11 medical cover? yes we pay for visitors but just for the free care alone it’s worth it. That will be lost if we exit that system. Hope you’ve got plenty of insurance lined up for your holidays next year.

EU instigated guarantees on air fair delays cancellations etc have more than paid their way this year.

Easy access to a major market. Every export will now attract a customs cost along with increased haulier costs . It doesn’t take many exports to wipe out that 74 Euros

Yes the EU will pay their customs too but we are a far smaller percentage of each individual country’s exports so the impact will be significantly less severe for each country.

Just another point; our children will now not have unfettered access to jobs around Europe. Think on that when your young adults are struggling when the U.K. unemployment goes up,. Restricting your children’s future is not something I thought anyone would vote for. ( remember we’re making it harder to get a job in the U.K. for foreigners so they will in turn make it harder for us.)

Sorry but there are no savings to be had that I can see once the new costs are added to trade.

Point 3

Immigration

Workers from the EU are now discouraged from coming to the UK even though they contributed more that they cost.

Immigrants who are arriving as dependants far outweigh any EU immigration and as the rules are not changing or moving to any points based system for those immigrants the net effect is, we will have more people coming to live off the U.K. tax payer as a percentage. No savings or benefit there. Just costs increasing.

The daily mail

I’ve noticed a slight change in their view of the Boris shit show. Even the Mail can’t defend the lies and terrible management of our government. So that’s positive but they will not be too revolutionary as their readers won’t like it.

Over the last few years the Mail along with the Sun have to take the blame for some of the most disgustingly biased anti EU reporting ever produced by a newspaper.

We are becoming a laughing stock around Europe and the world with the mess of this government and Brexit.

I truly hope I am wrong and that Brexit is a success because I love my country but the nonsense being presented by the government of their view of the future is in my honest opinion just a deceitful travesty to the hard working people of this country.

Vested interests have sold us a dud when the real reason this country is in such a state is our own successful governments who have not been capable of running a country in today’s fast moving world. The boom of the south a East was not shared across the country so the rich got richer and that is not Europe’s fault. What happened to our oil bonanza?

Good luck to everyone on both sides of the Brexit fence as I have no ill will to anyone as voting is true democracy. I just fear for our country’s future under our totally inept leaders.

"Thought I'd keep this going as I have had no pertinent response to the points I made...................

"The entire article is just the lies told about brexit in a different way..we will all be better off, cheaper food(chlorinated chicken)the money saved will be spent here,we can manage migration better etc with not 1 iota of evidence.

So the points I quoted are just "lies told about brexit in a different way"?

Yep,

This is just too easy

All those points I quoted were from an article in the Independent, the bible of the left wing. Although it reads less like a newspaper than it does an instruction manual for people with learning disabilities. Here's the link if you don't believe me

https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/brexit-what-next-reasons-be-positive-eu-referendum-jeremy-corbyn-a7104016.html

Many remain voters in the UK have allowed their hatred to overcome their logic and this is why they have no real credibility. Regarding the responses to my post, Shakespeare would say you have been hoist with your own petard. Modern parlance would translate that to "thoroughly schooled". Suckers

Or maybe, people aren't phased by where an article comes from

Doesn't matter if a 'left wing' or 'right wing' journalist says Brexit is a good idea.

Or maybe remainers anything that doesnt suit their narrative

Why did you vote for Brexit? And why do you think it is still a good idea? No need for newspaper articles, just your own reasons "

I didnt vote as i am not bothered either way. What bothers me is the blind ignorance of remainers that refuse to acknowledge any of the EU's failings.

Will eastern Europeans be able to unrestrictedly move to and work in the uk?

Legally? No. Who will employers now get to do the low paid (mainly in the hospitality sector) type of jobs ?

So we will be controlling immigration...

There will never be a way to completely ‘control immigration ‘ , I doubt this government have the brains to come up with a clever plan. Do you think that the Eastern European immigrants who have jobs will just leave the UK ?

The argument isnt about completely controlling immigration, its about lessening the problem of uncontrolled immigration.

Existing immigrants staying or leaving is also irrelevant although many have already left but eitherway, it doesnt change the fact that going forward we will be managing migration better and therfore bongo boys point is not the lie you say it is.

- We have a natural border. A big body of water called the sea.

- We are not in the Shengen Zone therefore there is no free travel between mainland Europe and the UK. "

Are you talking about legal migration as in the right to live and/ or work in member countries or illegal immigration as can only see where the sea plays a part in the latter

The UK has the right to deny non-EU migrants who have entered mainland EU illegally. They can move around mainland Europe within the Schengen area, which does not include the UK.

In terms of legal migration and the right to work. It's a two way street. We have the right to work in the EU (as well as the EEA).

- We are not in the Shengen Zone therefore there is no free travel between mainland Europe and the UK.

Are EU citizens free to come and live in the UK regardless of the sea (at present)"

No, but the post before didnt specify the type of immigration.

We have a natural border which stops illegal migrants from simply walking into the UK. And secondly if the sea were not there the fact that we're not in the Schengen zone means the UK has the right to deny them entry.

However even if we weren't in the EU, we may still get refugees attempting to sail the channel to get to the UK. But the number attempting to cross the border would be much larger without the sea.

As for legal immigration, EU migrants make up 5% of the total population. I would say that's not a very large number to consider it out of controp. In fact non EU migrants with the right to live and work here make up more than 8%.

Suckers

And?

It's still a load of nonsense whatever paper its written in.

Hahaha Do you want to borrow a JCB to dig yourself out of the massive hole you dug for yourself?

Still pretending to live in Brooklyn Clem? Even though you’re (not your ) only 180 miles away "

Wow, you got "you're" right on just the second try - way to go champ Do you get your ability to not spell from reading the Independent? Maybe go for something a bit higher brow, like the Beano or Dandy Who says left wing comedians aren't funny - you're doing a great job

No need for newspaper articles, just your own reasons

I didnt vote as i am not bothered either way. What bothers me is the blind ignorance of remainers that refuse to acknowledge any of the EU's failings.

The EU is full of faults and areas of total undemocratic processes but we should have tried to fix it not run away.

If you don’t care then why are you reading the OP?

Because i want to read it. I also like the debate and watching the incredulity, hypocrisy and the goalpost relocation from the hardcore remainers.

They are frustrated and angry because no matter what they say, or what they do - they are now brexiters like every other UK citizen. They have absolutely no choice and no other recourse than to bitch and moan about it like pissy little children. The smugness that emanates from the majority of them has absolutely no place in the future of the UK but their hands are tied. They are impotent. And a great source of amusement.

I’ve never belittled anyone .

We can all rant about a bus or taking back control easiest deal ever etc etc

Also the doomsday of remainers.

There is no truth until January .

I suspect we will all have to wait but saying one side in a debate is blind is to reach the lowest insult to open debate.

Challenging reasons is always good .

Remainers want to hear positive points as they are nervous . Brexiteers believe we will be in control so it doesn’t matter .

Idiots in both camps but also some some not so stupid .

Ok Clem, it is funny how an ‘American’ who lives 180 miles away from me has such a vested and vocal interested in Brexit ? Of course some of the remain voters are angry and bitter, just like the leave voters were after the first referendum in 1975. If Brexit is a success then I will reap the benefits (you won’t because apparently your an American ) if it is a failure then we will probably re join in the future.

Why did you vote for Brexit? And why do you think it is still a good idea? No need for newspaper articles, just your own reasons

I didnt vote as i am not bothered either way. What bothers me is the blind ignorance of remainers that refuse to acknowledge any of the EU's failings.

I’m not impotent and certainly have free hands . I can afford to just fuck off and enjoy life .

I care about those less fortunate so am always curious to know the latest moves from our fuck whit government.

I like everyone have to wait and see but I’ve moved some of my business and jobs to the continent just in case.

We can all be smug twats !!!

Of course some of the remain voters are angry and bitter, just like the leave voters were after the first referendum in 1975. You think leave voters from 65 years ago still care? The youngest would be 84 years old But no, excellent point well made. And again, it's "you're", not "your". Sigh.

Are EU citizens free to come and live in the UK regardless of the sea (at present)

In fact non EU migrants with the right to live and work here make up more than 8%."

So at present they are free to come here. I did not make any reference to if the amount is high or low. Yes the sea obviously helps with the illegals and also if the are claiming asylum they should do that in the first safe country

They are free to come, but so are we. It's a two way street. It's not like the flood gates are open and EU migrants have taken over.

Though I do not believe EU citizens are given the right to stay anywhere for no reason. Under certain conditions an EU member has the right to repatriate an EU migrant. (For example if they have not found work after some time).

But you made a point that we have a problem of "uncontrolled immigration". Where has it been a problem? You did not state whether immigration is high or low but calling it a "problem" is inferring that it is too high. Correct me if I'm wrong as I do not want to put words in your mouth.

With the exception of cities the UK is still made up of predominantly white British citizens, and London is not "Londonistan" etc.

I understand its a 2 way street but the subject was immigration not emigration.

As for the amount I think you have me mixed up with someone else as at no point did I say anything about uncontrolled immigration in fact I pointed out I am not saying its either high or low

Imagine going to all that trouble of finding a pro brexit article in the independent, to try to score a cheap political point, and ending up with egg on your face.

Tragic.

Nearly 2 threads and still not 1 cast iron benefit

Yep,

All those points I quoted were from an article in the Independent, the bible of the left wing. Although it reads less like a newspaper than it does an instruction manual for people with learning disabilities. Here's the link if you don't believe me

Many remain voters in the UK have allowed their hatred to overcome their logic and this is why they have no real credibility. Regarding the responses to my post, Shakespeare would say you have been hoist with your own petard. Modern parlance would translate that to "thoroughly schooled".

No need for newspaper articles, just your own reasons

I didnt vote as i am not bothered either way. What bothers me is the blind ignorance of remainers that refuse to acknowledge any of the EU's failings.

The EU is full of faults and areas of total undemocratic processes but we should have tried to fix it not run away.

If you don’t care then why are you reading the OP?

Because i want to read it. I also like the debate and watching the incredulity, hypocrisy and the goalpost relocation from the hardcore remainers.

Why do you think the people voted to leave?

That depends on their rationale and reasoning. An idiot is an idiot regardless of side however the leavers that post here tend to be open to discussion whereas the remainers like to gaslight, insult and belittle anyone that dares disageee with them

Being against Brexit.. not voting for it..makes you a brexiteer?

There really is no response to logic'loos that.

Being against Brexit.. not voting for it..makes you a brexiteer?

There really is no response to logic'loos that."

Again, your lack of education shows you up. I said "Brexiter", not "Brexiteer" - perhaps you believe they have different meanings and you got it wrong again? The dictionary definition of "Brexit" is:- the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. You are a British citizen, yes? You live in Britain, yes? As a British citizen living in Britain, you will be leaving the EU with all the other British citizens, yes? You are exiting Britain with everyone else, you are a Brexiter. You need to come to peace with that, and yourself.

If Britain hadn’t invaded their country 200 years ago, they wouldn’t be speaking English and they would not be so desperate to come to the U.K. they don’t come here for the great food or the world beating British weather.

The right wingers who will be singing Rule Britannia as loud as they can at the end of the proms, should also remember that these people are coming here because of their empire. You’ve got to love the right wingers cherry picking what suits them and reject what doesn’t.

No need for newspaper articles, just your own reasons

I didnt vote as i am not bothered either way. What bothers me is the blind ignorance of remainers that refuse to acknowledge any of the EU's failings.

The EU is full of faults and areas of total undemocratic processes but we should have tried to fix it not run away.

Haha, ok Clem . Can you tell what 2020 minus 1975 equals in numbers please. You are making an interesting point, unfortunately it is incorrect . The UK are leaving the EU, that doesn’t make the entire population a Brexiter, a brexiteer or a bunch Brexiters . A brexiter is someone who is in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, straight from the Cambridge dictionary . I will cut you some slack as you are from ‘America’ and you don’t use the correct version of English over there

You were still unable to come up with intelligent responses to those points though, weren't you? You just blustered away trashing the source, then went very quiet regarding the points made in the Independent - a source you have lauded on more than one occasion. But because these points don't fit into your caustic agenda, you are unable to answer. You make a lot of noise, but say nothing.

Being against Brexit.. not voting for it..makes you a brexiteer?

There really is no response to logic'loos that.

You are a liar. The Cambridge dictionary website says "Brexit - an exit (= act of leaving) by the United Kingdom from the European Union (short for "British exit"):"

If you're going to blatantly lie, don't do it on an internet forum where everybody can fact-check your lie in a few seconds, there's a good boy

Incorrect billy bongers, stick to your first language, English is confusing you

Ah, so you're playing with names now? We can all do that, eh fatspastic000? "

English isn’t your first language? You have admitted that in your profile ,

"

You realise that if you were actually intelligent..you wouldn't be on a swingers forum boasting about it?

It's rather like those middle aged fellas who blah about having a Porsche.

"You realise that if you were actually intelligent..you wouldn't be on a swingers forum boasting about it?"

Have you got a link to this "fact" or are you just making up crap again? This is your problem Lionel Hutz, you make up crap that I'm sure you believe in yourself, but little of it is actually true. You come across as a bitter and divisive person. Tell me, do many of your friends and relatives suffer from depression?

Superb.

Little tip my boy.

Perhaps at least try to stick to politics as opposed to personal insults.

You will only embarrass yourself again

If you're going to describe your penis to me, there are other more suitable forums.

Still no intelligent response to the 3 points then? Fail "

Daja vu here.

I replied hours ago.

Do you have a time difference where you are?

So can I ask as an outsider in Ireland, genuinely had the sentiment changed towards Brexit in the UK of late? And like I am NOT starting a row genuine question, if immigration is cut down on who do people think will prepare food in factories, look after the elderly, cleaning, food prep etc? In Ireland at start of lockdown there was general angst in the media when it turned out a large fruit and veg firm flew in quite a large number of migrant workers to pick fruit for the season. But they advertised the jobs here for weeks and got a handful of replies-generally speaking we will not do that work? Thanks!

We still haven't left so how can anyone say its a bad thing. The last parliament was full of dick heads trying to subvert what the people had voted for, hence a historical victory on a leave platform for the Conservative party. The people have made it plain, we are leaving the EU. Barnier and his cronies are just trying to shafts us for ruining their dream along with lying Tony who dreams of being EU president. . Bunch of prats, we are a independent nation not their vassal or underlings. Hope Boris tells them to do one. Rule Brittania, Britain's never will be slaves. We are getting our country free from the clutches of a foreign undemocratic power. The marche communes days are numbered, we are taking back our country.

Hard to say really..covid has sort of nasked everything for the moment.

I think if we crash our without a deal it may be back on the agenda..but most people who have voted out, appear to claim they were in the right,if this place is anything to go by.

We have left the EU. I'm surprised you missed that fact since you're such an enthusiastic leaver.

Actually, I think a bit of Shirley's meandering response points to the narrative we'll see unfurled. Anything that goes badly for us after the transition period ends will be the fault of the dastardly EU. (It won't be to do with the fact we left the biggest trading bloc in the world and imposed sanctions on ourself.)

We are still in the EU clutches of transition, and they still want to keep their claws in to us. The EU project is dying, they are determined to make it harder for us to make other countries tow the line, the sooner we are fully out the better, its doomed, and they want our money to keep them going.

Ahhhh those dastardly Europeans. And they have claws? Scary. Do they have horns too? Bet they live in evil lairs like Bond villains! No wonder you don't trust em!

This was never just about trade, it is about national identity and trying to water down our identity especially in England. Having people like Anthony Blair try to foist the euro on to us, in his dreams of EU president, well the dream is dead, we are leaving a sinking ship just in time. Its a pity corbyn didn't stick to his true belief about the EU, instead of giving in to Mr establishment, starmer and his EU loving mates. The marche communes days are numbered.

These evil Europeans are in a sinking ship? Did their claws pierce it? All your theories are adding up now!
