Shame the Sun is still in his companies grasp.

There is a programme on sky Atlantic called succession which is apparently based on him.

He’s bought every election in the last 30 years.

Thatcher gave him the power to own multiple newspapers by changing the law. That was a big step in destroying real democracy in this country. Blair sold out to him too.

Even his own son James has had enough of fighting him and resigned recently.

Papers released under the thirty year rule clearly show Bernard Ingham, John Nott and Mrs Thatcher colluded to bypass their monopolies commission and allow Murdoch also to bypass the good character requirement for owning a newspaper .

Other bids were discounted at a meeting behind closed doors between Murdoch and Thatcher.

Basically it was cheating and they were never held to account .

So that was the start of deregulating the press and we have been lied to ever since by that press born for the tories and labour .

Disgusting and totally against democracy .

That’s absolutely right and forgive me for not remembering the actual details from 35 years ago. However if the monopolies commission make a ruling most reasonable and upstanding MP’s business men and companies would take that as fact and abide by that ruling.

Mrs Thatcher removed the owning of newspapers from the oversight of the monopolies commission for the benefit of a supporter. This was the start of a bias news industry.

That’s disgraceful behaviour and has no defence.

"

The deal to sell The Times and the Sunday Times, from the Thomson group to Murdoch, was never referred to the MMC. The deal was signed off by Trade Minister, John Biffen. This was done on the understanding, that if it didn't go through, both papers would have closed.

Murdoch also used leverage in stating that, if the MMC got involved, he would pull out of the deal.

Thatcher saw Murdoch as a useful tool, in breaking up the highly unionised and restrictive practice media industry, as was.

Yes that’s right and John Biffen would have never done that off his own back

If it was referred to the MMC it might have been a different story. Murdoch was allegedly considered not the best character to own newspapers in this country which shows it was stopped.

I agree the trade practices where abhorrent and MrsThatcher needed to do something to fix the sick man of Europe which is who we were. The miners wielded too much political power as did the dockers. I remember being forced to hand over cash to get cargoes loaded.

I did very nicely out of that boom period and my businesses developed rapidly but in hindsight she went too far towards the financial and general service economy but devastated manufacturing. It needed modernising and sorting out not obliterating.

Am I right in thinking the Thompson family insisted the paper was always independent editorial wise?

The unions stifled the business to the point where the family had had enough.

Selling it to Murdoch cancelled the independent thinking of the Sun and the times. It became a mouthpiece for Murdoch’s agenda.

Roy Thomson, who owned the Times, was a Canadian, so not into the party politcal nonsense so much.

It does stand to reason that the established "press barons" would push their own agendas. Most had established money anyway.

Things changed in the 1980s, where new money was the order of the day. Murdoch was no different in this, it just helped that the trades unions were being put back in their box.

I remember a quote from Rupert Murdoch in which he said "There is no difference to your life or lifestyle in having £19 million or £20 million in the bank....after that stage it becomes about Power"

He is a man who has trampled over anyone and everything in his pusuit of it.

Unfortunately too many people buy into his "lazy scroungers" "Union Barons " type editorials....Nothing to admire other than his capacity to keep working when most would have sat back and enjoyed there fortune.

The documentary really highlighted how much influence Murdoch has in the UK and USA.

Prime Ministers have been elected because of him. Trump was elected because of him too. We were kept out of the Euro because of him. Brexit happened because of him. He drove us to war in Iraq.

And all this from one man who isn't even a politician.

It seems Murdoch meddled to keep us out of the Euro. Just as he meddled to get us out of the EU.

Murdoch wanted us out of the EU because he has little influence over them.

The Euro came into existence on 1 January 1999, although it had been a goal of the European Union (EU) and its predecessors since the 1960s. After tough negotiations, particularly due to opposition from the United Kingdom, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force in 1993 with the goal of creating an economic and monetary union by 1999 for all EU states except the UK and Denmark (even though Denmark has a fixed exchange rate policy with the euro).

It had been a long term goal of the EU ( EEC ).

Brown would have been a child when it was 1st mooted

yeah I get that but at the time the UK was deliberating over whether to adopt the euro or stay with the pound he was in charge of the treasury and his five economic tests that he set for the UK to adopt the euro were seen as unachievable and set that way on purpose so that we would not adopt the currency and the UK could still maintain control over its interest rates etc.

Much more important supposedly was this reason & not 5ET

"Other Reasons for Not Adopting the Euro

The British government has not wanted to abdicate control of its own interest rate policy, which would occur under the euro system. The system would also remove the current level of comfort with the pound sterling exchange rate. For instance, a British firm or investor who is used to exchanging pounds to dollars or vice versa would be forced to adjust to a euro exchange rate ".

Much more to do with people within the uk not wanting to do

A little to much with regards to Exchange rates.
