So UK is offering a route to citizenship for Hong Kong residents with British Overseas Nationality (quite right given the coach and horses CCP have driven through international law).

China have said they will "respond with corresponding action".

If China offered you a route to Chinese citizenship....would you take it?

I don't think this will be the corresponding action they will be suggesting

Although I’m not keen on China as a country, it’ll be a much more prosperous country in 20 years’ time than ours. I gear the pandemic and Brexit will accelerate the downfall of this country that started immediately after 1945. And we will be more isolated than ever as we’ve told the EU to fuck off.

I should have said that I wouldn’t take Chinese nationality. Canadian, German Irish and New Zealand would be my top four choices. I’d swap my half British nationality with any of these countries immediately. As for my other nationality, I’ll never swap it or surrender it.

"

Bit ironic given that the Brexit vote was largely taken to be a vote against immigration, that the Govenment have now effectively openend the door to immigration from Hong Kong, and at the same time alienated us from China just at a time when we are looking to build bridges with anyone we can outside of Europe....

You’re right. They’ll kick our ass in a different way. Good job the brexiters will flex their muscles and shoe China that we’ve taken back control and ruling the world again!

That you are convinced or not doesn’t really matter to be honest. It’s what I eventually do that is more important. I’m getting increasingly ashamed of being British when I go to other countries. It probably shocks some people to read this but that’s how I feel. There’s not much to be proud of at the moment and I can’t see it change for quite some time.

Yes, is that a problem? It’s not my fault if this country has turned to a populist idiot to run this country and we have become a laughing stock.

I can’t change our PM or improve the image of this country by myself. If this country goes further down the route of isolationism, I won’t want to have anything to do with it.

I haven’t spent my whole life learning foreign languages and being open-minded to other countries, cultures etc... to stay in a country full of bigots who think the sun shines through their assholes when it’s so obvious that Britain is less and less powerful with every day that passes.

It is so amusing to watch the posturing of the UK trying to dictate to the super power that is china, add to this the hypocrisy of the British crying for human rights in the far east, the same British who seized honk Kong from China following the first opium war in 1842,it was the ideal base for the British to use there monopoly to traffic Afghan opium into China, also a centre to export Chinese labour slaves (know as colleys) to build the infrastructure in the British empire

I couldn’t agree more. Oh but hang on, we brought them culture, knowledge, civilisation and we treated them with huge respect. Hong Kong was Chinese Son the first place, what the fuck do we have anything to do with this part of the world?

I said I might. Nothing wrong with this. Some people have applied for other nationalities since Brexit. Boris Johnson’s father for example who is applying for French nationality. I’m not the only person to be embarrassed, believe me. There are a lot of people who can’t stand what has happened to our country in the last five years.

Of course not.as the Hong kongers won't and will be moving to UK

Well done Boris for opening the door for them

If millions do come they will only add to UK society and culture.if they are let

Again well done Boris

I'll give him a few days amnesty of my roasting him for that

We absolutely should allow British Nationals Oversea's to come live and work here.

I lived in Hong Kong before it was handed back (my dad was posted there).

And hand up. I rarely travel on my British passport

Unless it makes a visa sooo much cheaper which is rare!

Going to be so interesting when china decide that they're just going to seize the assets of hong kong and ship all the existing population to England. Boris has said how welcome they will be, and how they can all become British citizens. So it'll be fun to see the tory party squirm when four million HK'ers turn up as refugees at Dover...

Because the country is overcrowded; there's no room left; foreigners are taking our jobs etc... You need to listen to the guys you vote for a bit more.

You'll have to explain the difference between the two. And how the policies put in place by the tories since the last election differ from the Brexit party. The immigration point system is a good place for you to start your explanation.

The offer has been made as political posturing with no belief that it would be taken up by other than a tiny number of the wealthiest. I could easily see though that china might decide to rid itself of what it sees as a troublesome population - impound money, goods and property, shove the dispossessed HK'ers onto cargo ships and deliver them to Dover.

When they turn up as refugees by the million with no money, little english language, little relevant skills, wanting homing, feeding, schooling, medical care - gonna be a few really pissed off English.

This is not political posturing

It's the right thing to do.

The Government have stepped up to the plate and have exceeded the very basic of support afforded to any British National Overseas.

Stepped to the plate? Really. So far, it’s just an announcement isn’t it? They’ll have stepped to the plate if they manage to do and really do what they said they would do. So far it’s just two sentences pronounced by Raab and Johnson, nothing really extraordinary. Nobody has arrived from HK, yet.

It’s the right decision but what amuses me is how our Tory cheerleaders are getting so over the moon about such an obvious decision to make. They sound as if they can’t believe that this gvt has at last managed to make a right decision!

Yes, I know you’re all pinching yourselves but they are capable of an ounce of common sense now and then. You all seem to be surprised by this yourselves that we get messages congratulating the gvt three times in the same post.

You obviously missed the Windrush scandal then. Where the government shredded a bunch of nationality documents and then proceeded to deport people who had been in this country their entire lives - of course they were the wrong colour, so that was okay.

Hate to break it to you, but all these people in HK that boris has offered a home to are not English who emigrated there years ago, they are the descendents of the original inhabitants of the island. Through a quirk of international treaties many of them are entitled to passports that include the word "british" but I am bloody certain that if they all started arriving tomorrow with no money and nowhere to live, the government will find lots of technical details why it's the wrong sort of "british".

The tories (in particular, though not exclusively) have spent my entire lifetime saying that people from former british territories are not welcome in this country unless they happen to be multi-millionaires. However I would love to believe in this road to Damascus moment, this abrupt turnaround of fifty years of policy, and shall watch with great interest for the gates being thrown wide to not just the people of Hong Kong but also all those from former British Empire countries to whom we owe similar moral obligation.

"So UK is offering a route to citizenship for Hong Kong residents with British Overseas Nationality (quite right given the coach and horses CCP have driven through international law).

China have said they will "respond with corresponding action".

If China offered you a route to Chinese citizenship....would you take it?"

No, I wouldn't. The vast majority of Hong Kong's citizens won't be coming to the UK, anyway; for various reasons.

One of the main reasons will be China's control of Hong Kong. It's Chinese territory. They're imposing their own laws there. They'll control who leaves, if they want to.

I'm not saying any of that is fair, or right - but they're the ones with the power and more people, particularly our Government and its fan-base, should grasp the 'realpolitik' of the situation.

The Chinese are merely taking the 'might is right' approach the UK did when it had an empire - and the USA (and to a far lesser extent) Russia do, to this day.

It's why they feel justified in telling us to mind our own business.
